Great Featurette on FuManchu
The Rise of Fu Manchu (2003)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Nice Blue Underground featurette can be found on their release of Jess Franco's THE BLOOD OF FU MANCU. Franco is joined by producer Harry Alan Towers as well as stars Christopher Lee, Tsai Chin and Shirley Eaton. Franco starts off talking about why he loves the Fu Manchu novels so much and then Towers gets into why he ended up writing the screenplays. Lee then jumps in talking about why he never understood why the producer would buy the Fu Manchu stories and then come up with new stories. Chin is on hand to discuss her part and how the racist content made her feel about appearing in such a film. Overall this is another wonderful featurette from the studio as we really get a complete view of those involved with the film. Franco is as honest as always and this is especially true when he talks about how Lee is somewhat ashamed of the genre that made him a legend. Lee is also good here as he talks about his dislike a sequels, something he was in several of with this series as well as the Dracula series for Hammer. If you're a fan of the film or even if you hate it (like I do), this here really works as strong entertainment as the stories are good and the entire cast keeps them coming.
