V Rising isn’t just one of the most surprising hits of 2022; it’s a genuinely great vampire-based survival RPG that makes the most out of its horror atmosphere and blend of genres. Of course, it’s also an incredibly deep game that often forces you to learn new mechanics and consider new possibilities. Even deciding which weapon to use can be an intimidating prospect.
The good news is that V Rising’s weapon system is designed to be fairly accommodating. Weapons are more often an extension of your character’s stats, which means that your decision to use one of the game’s seven weapon types over the others will often come down to availability, specific situations, and personal preferences. Still, every weapon does offer unique skills, stats, and advantages/disadvantages that ultimately make some a bit more effective than others. You can play the game with whatever weapons...

Right now, the name Chris Rock is synonymous with one thing: The Slap at the March 27 Oscars. However, Rock’s career is a lot more varied than that one incident, though there are several clues in his work leading up to that moment.
May 20 marks the 35th anniversary of his movie debut as a parking valet in the 1987 “Beverly Hills Cop 2.”
Variety’s review described it as “noisy, numbing, unimaginative” and didn’t mention Rock. A year later, however, he got a shout-out in the Dec. 9, 1988, review of “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka,” with Variety enthusing, “Chris Rock turns a walk-on into a standout” as a customer in a rib joint.
Rock’s first big break came in 1984, when he booked a splashy standup gig in 1984 at Catch a Rising Star in New York. Eddie Murphy saw and mentored him, Rock continued to work, and soon he made his...

Benedetta is a film that is a true gift for any performer, as a movie that seamlessly moves between different genres, with multi-layered, complex characters at its centre, allowing so much scope for actors to express themselves and try their hand at a variety of different things. For Daphne Patakia, this was very much the case, and so when we had the pleasure in speaking to the up and coming star, she recounted her memorable experiences on set, ranging from the sex scenes, to the torture ones. She speaks about how important it was for her to feel comfortable on set, and how the esteemed filmmaker Paul Verhoeven went about ensuring his actors felt this way. She also comments on the collaboration process with the auteur, and what it is that makes him such a special and unique force in storytelling.

Rom-coms and crime stories dominated submissions to the first Chinese-language scriptwriting competition co-presented by Taiwan’s Studio76 and MediaCorp in Singapore.
Unveiled at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest last year, “Rising Stories” received 520 submissions, far higher than the 100-150 organizers had anticipated, Studio76’s CEO and managing partner Dennis Yang told Variety. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, organizers only promoted the event online and approached scriptwriters chat groups on social media.
Around 75% of the entries came from Taiwan, Yang said. But the competition — also backed by Tencent’s WeTV and X Media Asia — also received submissions from Chinese-speaking parts of Asia, mainland China, the U.S., Europe and Australia.
Nearly half of the submissions — story treatments rather than full scripts — are romantic comedies, or rom-com, according to Yang. “Some come with a twist of fantasy or sci-fi,” he added. Around 28% of the proposals are crime stories, while the remaining...

Stacey Abrams has been tapped to receive the inaugural Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice award as part of the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.
The new award named for Belafonte — the Emmy-winning actor, activist and civil rights leader — is intended to recognize individuals who have used storytelling and the arts to enact change in their communities.
Abrams, in addition to her work as a politician and voting rights activist, also produced last year’s gripping documentary “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” which illuminated America’s history of voter suppression. As such, Tribeca announced that Abrams will be honored for her “outstanding leadership, service and commitment to fighting against injustices through her work as a political leader, voting rights activist and novelist.”
“We are proud to salute the brilliant and inspiring actor, activist and friend, Harry Belafonte with this award created in his honor,’” said Tribeca Chief Content Officer, Paula Weinstein.

This Shadow And Bone feature contains spoilers for Season 1.
Though Netflix’s new fantasy series Shadow and Bone is based on the bestselling Grishaverse novels of author Leigh Bardugo, it’s not a straightforward adaptation of the book series that shares its name. Updated Exclusive: CAA has dropped Marilyn Manson as a client, sources told Deadline on Tuesday, a day after allegations of sexual and emotional abuse made by Evan Rachel Wood were followed by similar claims by other women.

CAA had no comment today.
Fyi – Evan Rachel Wood continues to be represented by CAA.
Previously, Monday Pm: Already dropped by his label and possibly his agency, Marilyn Manson’s bloody stint on Starz’s American Gods is over now too.
The axing comes after Evan Rachel Wood publicly accused the long in the tooth shock rocker of “horrifically” abusing and “grooming” her when the Westworld actress was still a teenager.

Shadow and Bone, the Netflix series adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s gorgeous Grishaverse series, isn’t just a straight adaptation of the book that shares its name. In addition to the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the series will also be adapting Six of Crows, a duology set in the same world. It’s an ambitious choice, given that Six of Crows takes place after the events of Shadow and Bone, but it’s a smart one. The addictive heist drama of Six of Crows brings a different and complementary energy to the dark, fantastical world readers are introduced to in Shadow and Bone. If showrunner Eric Heisserer (Bird Box) can effectively integrate the Six of Crows characters into Shadow and Bone, then both book fans and those unfamiliar with the source material alike are in for a treat. But what will the incorporation of these two separate-though-related series look like?...

While tabletop players of Magic: The Gathering still have a few days to wait until the final Standard-legal set of 2020 releases, folks over on the collectible card game’s digital counterpart, Arena, have had full access to the expansion since last week. Boasting hundreds of cards (reprints and new additions) as well as keywords such as Landfall, Party and Modal Double-Faced Cards, Zendikar Rising marks a long-awaited return to one of the most popular locations in Magic‘s multiverse and, so far at least, reception to the product appears to have been predominantly positive.
As has become standard in recent years, however, many fans continue to freely criticize Wizards of the Coast for continuing to raise the cost of assembling a competitive-worthy deck, especially in Arena, where no secondary market exists, meaning cards therefore have no resale value. The disquiet is particularly prominent this time around, of course, as Zendikar...

Magic: The Gathering continues to suffer the effects of 2020’s ongoing pandemic, it would seem.
The popular Ccg, which trades predominantly in physical products, has been hit with several substantial delays over the last several months due to Covid-19, and while Wizards of the Coast has done a tremendous job in keeping up with demand, setbacks at the production level are unavoidable. In a statement published last week, the company confirmed that, despite its best efforts, supply for the final Standard expansion of this year, Zendikar Rising, will be lower than desired, at least initially.
Initial allocations of the set, it says, will be distributed Stateside in two waves. The first will be available in stores in time for the originally scheduled release date of September 25th, with the second due to arrive roughly one week later. Naturally, this means that some local game stores will be unable to satisfy...

Magic: The Gathering‘s next major release, Zendikar Rising, may be primarily focused around expanding Standard when it drops later this month, but that certainly doesn’t mean Wizards of the Coast is leaving fans of other formats out in the cold. As expected, the final third in 2020’s three-part block (Theros: Beyond Death and Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths being the other two) will be arriving alongside a handful of accompanying products, chief among them new Commander decks.
For those not familiar with the format, Commander eschews the usual Magic rules and tasks players with constructing a 100-card deck consisting of only individual cards – no copies. Due to the comparably difficult nature of building such a deck, Wizards regularly releases pre-made versions intended to be playable straight out of the box. These usually contain cards not legal in any other format and always provide a titular commander card, often in foil.

Beginning not least with the cancellation of the Olympic Games in Japan, 2020 has been a year unprecedentedly devoid of sporting events. Though there’s been a slow return to normal there’s still no live audience, stadiums are mostly empty, and many athletes were left to hang up hopes after endless training. Enter “Rising Phoenix,” “McQueen” team Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s . While it doesn’t capture the same excitement of a live competition, the filmmakers damn well try, intercutting intelligently art-designed interviews with flashy visual symbolism, ethereal reenactments, and frequently nail-shredding archival footage from Paralympic Games of the past.
Narrated by Paralympics advocate Prince Harry, “Rising Phoenix” will probably introduce you to some of the Paralympics’ most famous figures, and the disabilities that have become a tremendous asset in their respective fields, from skiing while blind and fencing in a wheelchair. “12 Years a Slave” and “Shame” director Steve McQueen has dedicated his pair of Cannes-selected films to George Floyd.
McQueen’s films “Mangrove” and “Lovers Rock” — both part of the director’s BBC-commissioned “Small Axe” anthology, consisting of five feature-length stories — have been selected for Cannes, which revealed its line-up today despite not going ahead with a physical festival this year.
“I dedicate these films to George Floyd and all the other black people that have been murdered, seen or unseen, because of who they are, in the U.S., U.K. and elsewhere,” said McQueen. “‘If you are the big tree, we are the small axe.’ Black Lives Matter.”
McQueen’s comments come the same day as a massive protest was staged in London’s Hyde Park for the Black Lives Matter movement. “Star Wars” actor John Boyega, who will also appear in one of the “Small Axe” films,...

My Hero Academia has only been around for a few years, but it’s already gained mass acclaim and become one of the most popular anime series in years. The series consistently pushes its characters to challenging new places, but it can be difficult for supplemental feature films to capture the same level of importance and feel like they’re not stuck inside of some non-canonical bubble.
My Hero Academia’s first film, Two Heroes, was considered a success by fans, but the series is now in a more complex place where its endgame is increasingly on its mind. Thankfully, My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising isn’t just an improvement over Two Heroes, but it actually feels like an important chapter from these characters’ lives that won’t just be conveniently forgotten when everything’s said and done.

As expected, diversity (or the lack thereof) was the hot-button topic at tonight’s BAFTA Awards. Joaquin Phoenix, picking up his Best Actor prize for Joker, made a particularly poignant speech on the topic.
“I feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege. I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here,” he said onstage at the Royal Albert Hall. “I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry, and in ways that we benefit from.”
“I don’t think anybody wants a handout or preferential treatment, although that’s what we give ourselves every year. I think people just want to be acknowledged, appreciated and respected for their work. This is not a self-righteous condemnation...

If there is anything that horror nerds know, it’s that you can’t always trust kids. Sure, they might seem cute, and some of them are even innocent. But in other cases, the minute your back is turned, they become a Damien or an Esther or a Rhoda. From Katrin Gebbe (Nothing Bad Can Happen) comes a film that offers a fascinating and touching spin on the evil kid subgenre.
Wiebke (Nina Hoss) is a single mother, raising her daughter Nicolina (Adelia-Constance Giovanni Ocleppo) and training horses in the German countryside. Her work informs her general outlook on the world—it takes time, dedication, and above all, patience. True connection comes through trust and through communication. Mother May I Sleep with Martyr?: Gebbe Dresses in Distress with Maternal Drama
It’s always lamentable to find a charismatic actor stymied by a poorly realized narrative, especially when their performance has the power to elevate a film’s faultier foundations. Such is the case with the effervescent Nina Hoss, one of German cinema’s most revered contemporary performers and arguably the visual forefront of the Berlin School thanks to her collaborations with Christian Petzold and Thomas Arslan. After exploring (frighteningly) the dark mind of a psychopath in her 2013 debut Nothing Bad Can Happen — which premiered in Cannes' Un Certain Regard — German director Katrin Gebbe wanted to go deeper. "I thought, 'What makes a person evil? What does their childhood look like?'" she says.

Like most great actors, Nina Hoss has the gift of bringing innate credibility to writing not necessarily blessed with the same virtue: When a character’s choices make little sense, or their backstory seems incompletely shaded, she can play these flaws as messy human glitches rather than conceptual gaps. As a single mother trying every available route to avoid giving up on (or simply giving up) the seemingly psychotic five-year-old girl she has recently adopted, Hoss’s teeth-gritted commitment to the role keeps us on side through more questionable stages of maternal meltdown than many a talented thesp would manage.
But to look a gift Hoss in the mouth for a moment, the star’s best efforts can’t prevent “Pelican Blood” from...
