Great episode.

Belle Hammond visits psychic medium Claire Moss, who predicts a fire, on a second visit she predicts care trouble, Belle breaks down, another prediction is made. Humphrey and Martha are interviewed by the adoption authorities.

One of the show's best episodes to date, this was excellent.

So good, so so good, I loved the story, I loved the sun story, the humour, and one scene in particular struck a chord, that moment where Humphrey is being interviewed, and gives an honest account of himself, tremendous, Marshall at his best.

That scene between Martha and Esther, wonderful, the acting throughout this episode was really top notch.

Of course there are a few moments of humour thrown in, and once again Anne's social life provides plenty of entertainment.

Even better, it's got Peter Davison.

9/10.

My compliments to the authors

After only two episodes, I find the second season of BEYOND PARADISE to be very promising. The characters have gained more layers, so we can expect more beautiful and touching stories and scenes.

In this episode, Martha and Humphrey were interviewed about adopting a child. Humphrey's monologue, in particular, can be included in any book of monologues. Tony Jordan and Robert Thorogood have written a wonderful scene, and Humphrey's monologue is one that could make many an actor shine at an audition. I have added it to my list of favourite monologues and will also be very happy to share it with my students. Kris Marshall certainly nailed it.

Clumsy

I adore Chris Marshall. I have loved him since DIP. He was my favourite detective. He is such a natural at his character. I enjoyed this episode as usual but I do think he plays up the clumsy, socially awkward guy a little too much. Still loveable though.

As I have said before I enjoy all of the characters except for Martha. Hopefully she will grow on me. Humphrey's work partner (cant remember her name) is turning out to be an interesting, complex character. I like her and think she is a good match for Humphrey. I hope her storyline will be flushed out more.

It is always comical hearing Selwyn's name and the ode to DIP.

Warning: Spoilers
Humphrey Goodman and DS Esther Williams wonder if medium Claire Moss really does have supernatural powers.

Belle Hammond whose grandfather died recently consulted Clare for a reading. She told Belle that she was getting energy from her grandfather. Belle was warned of a possible fire.

As Belle drove home, she saw that her garage was on fire. Later Clare warned Belle of a possible accident.

Soon after Belle had a car accident although she survived it

Humphrey is convinced something does not add up. For example if it was kids responsible for th arson, they would have hung around to watch the fire.

Martha knows Claire and she tells Humphrey that Claire is above board.

Later Belle gets mugged and a medal was stolen, it had sentimental value as it belonged to her grandfather. Once again she was forewarned by Claire.

The curse of having a well known name as a bit character gave the game away slightly. It very much pointed how Belle's various calamities might have happened.

Becoming its own beast

If you are lucky to get to a second series of a spin-off then you have to start fleshing out the supporting characters so that it doesn't feel like it's all on the head of the character that has been spun-off. This is one of the fatal errors that 'Joey' made.

While Martha still remains a bit 2D, the writers here do seem to be making a go of trying to achieve this.

So we have a rather sweet ongoing plot involving Martha's mum and online dating, we get to see a bit more about Esther's past, and even Humphrey himself is given a wonderful opportunity to shine in a dramatic moment.

It's things like this that elevate the show beyond the rather rigid format of its parent programme ('Death in Paradise') and offer us a bit more to invest in.
