Season Three Review
southdavid3 December 2023
Being a fan of Rab Florence and regular listener to his Wrestling podcast, I've gone out of my way to find "The Scotts" which is only available on the Iplayer this side of Hadrian's Wall. I've enjoyed the mix of comedy and heart that the show has, and I believe that this third season is perhaps the best they've done.

Laura (Sharon Young) is preparing for empty nest syndrome starting as her son, Jason (Taylor Stewart) is planning to leave the house. She looks for a bit more spontaneity from Henry (Iain Connell) but he's just looking forward to the peace. Vincent (Rab Florence) kicks off a health drive, much to Vonny's (Shauna McDonalds) annoyance. Darren (Lee Grieg) is driven to propose to Colette (Louise McCarthy) even though he knows that she dreams of a massive wedding that they can't afford.

I do think this was perhaps the best season that they've done so far. Each pairing has quite a relatable problem, money issues, a health crisis and empty nest syndrome, though each are exaggerated through the personalities of the characters. I do like that there has been a bit of growth over the seasons as, for example, Henry hasn't reset totally after his breakthrough last year, and is more open to what Laura wants. This season utilises Jason a little more than the previous ones have, proving that Taylor Stewart is a good comedic actor.

Again, the references to gaming and Wrestling are the icing on the cake for someone like me, who is a similar age to Florence and has an interest in both areas. I was waiting for "Finish the Story" in the last episode before it was said. The conceit of the reality TV show works well within the series even if occasionally it's doesn't quite match in with some of the scenes you see.

The series has reached a point where it could end, if another season is not forthcoming, though not seeing what Colette's dream wedding looks like, would be disappointing, so hopefully at least one more run.
