Though rapper Jay-z will soon be working on the music for Sony's developing remake of Annie starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, last month he decided to dabble in performance art. On July 10th, Jay-z performed his recent song Picasso Baby for six hours straight at the Pace Gallery in New York City. The purpose of his performance art piece was to find out what would happen if Jay-z performed specifically to a single person instead of an arena full of fans. Now the footage has been edited down to a nearly 11-minute short film which features appearances by Judd Apatow, Alan Cumming and more. Here's Jay-z's Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film from director Mark Romanek (via Collider): Other notables guests include stars of the HBO series "Girls" like Adam Driver and Jemima Kirke along with other talents like Taraji P. Henson, Marina Abramovic (whose...

On July 10, Jay Z decided to brand himself as not just a rapper, but a performance artist with an installation at New York's Pace Gallery. What is his take on modern art? Rapping his song "Picasso Baby" for six hours in front of a crowd of dancing fans.
A 10-minute short film made at the event, aptly titled "Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film," debuted Friday (August 2) on HBO and was then put online. The video shows appearances by a number of celebrities who were attending the event, from actors Alan Cumming and Taraji P. Henson, to director Judd Apatow and members of the "Girls" cast. Rosie Perez and Fab Five Freddy also show up.
Itwas a unique experience for Jay and his fans, all of whom look like they are having a great time. It's also a more interesting watch than a run of the mill music video.

If you weren't one of the dozens of New Yorkers and tourists who got a chance to hear Jay Z rap at the Pace Gallery, then you're in luck.
HBO released a short film about the project, entitled "Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film" on Friday night (August 2).
Directed by Mark Romanek, the video takes fans into the Gallery, where for six hours the legendary rapper performed his song "Picasso Baby."
Describing the similarities between performance art and rap, the proud papa of Blue Ivy explains, "We're artists. We're cousins.", as he hopes to bring the worlds back together, saying, "I try not to have expectations going into a performance." Check out the entire film below, and see if you can spot cameos by Alan Cumming, Taraji P. Henson, Judd Apatow, Rosie Perez, and more!

If the art world and the hip-hop world have one thing in common, it's a hearty appetite for controversy. (And before members of both camps start flaming me, yes, I realize they have more than just that in common.) So it was probably inevitable that Jay Z's decision to stage a "performance piece" at the Pace Gallery over the course of six hours would stir passions. To some in the art world, ever suspicious of celebrity incursions, it was a debasement of the form. To some in the hip-hop world, ever suspicious of crossover betrayals, it was a flagrant display of elitism.
But what was Jay Z himself trying to achieve? According to Mark Romanek, who conceptualized the event and directed the resulting half-hour documentary (set to air on HBO this Friday at 11 pm), the inspiration was simple. Romanek had seen the 2012 film "Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present,...
