Imax fans turned up in droves to see “Dune 2” on the really big screen, helping the company top analyst earnings estimates for the first quarter of 2024.
Despite the sandworm bump, it was a tough compare with the year-ago period when Imax benefited from the blockbuster success of “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2023 to deliver its highest-grossing Q1 to date. Revenue in the first quarter of 2024 was $79.1 million, down 9% year over year, while net income was $3.3 million (an adjusted 15 cents per share), up 33%.
During the most recent quarter, Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Two” became one of the Top 10 Imax releases of all time. The Denis Villeneuve-directed sci-fi epic has garnered more than $143 million at the global box office to date on Imax screens — representing 21% of the film’s total gross receipts.

“Queen Rock Montreal” will make its global streaming premiere May 15 on Disney+ as the first concert film available with Imax Enhanced sound by DTS.
When it arrived in theaters in January, the remastered 1981 concert was Imax’s biggest exclusive engagement. Now, it will debut on Disney+ alongside 18 Marvel films that will also be offered with Imax Enhanced sound on supported devices, Imax’s senior VP and head of Imax post and image capture Bruce Markoe announced during a panel Sunday at the Nab Show in Las Vegas.
The original concerts, featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, took place over two consecutive nights in November 1981, and were arranged specifically to be filmed for a full-length concert film to document their live show. The performance includes classics such as “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Somebody to Love.” It was restored for Imax by Mercury Studios.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Napoleon Dynamite. It was in a Montreal movie theater in the old Forum building (currently featured in the Queen IMAX doc Queen Rock Montreal). The film had only been out a few weeks but had already started becoming a cult hit following its Sundance premiere. I remember it being a matinee on a weekday, and I was stunned when I saw several audience members wearing identical “Vote for Pedro” t-shirts. I knew from the reviews that it was a reference to the movie, and it was then that I had an accurate idea of just how deep the Napoleon Dynamite cult was going.
And folks – that was Twenty years ago! Crazy isn’t it? But yes, Napoleon Dynamite has been a thing since 2004, with it grossing $44 million on a $400,000 budget, and it’s known as being one of the best-selling DVDs of all time,...

So, here we are in mid-January, and though we’re staring down the barrel of a tough year ahead, it’s not all wintry doom and gloom on an international box office (and combined global) level.
While we’re not in blockbuster holdover territory, we should celebrate the wins when they come. To wit, there was a new milestone reached this weekend for Sony’s Anyone But You, which, with $100.2M, has become the highest-grossing R-rated romcom worldwide since Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016.
Let’s also cheer that Paramount’s Mean Girls clicked with UK audiences in its launch and opened at No. 1 there. Also, Searchlight’s lauded Poor Things was tops in France, Freddie Mercury went supersonic in the IMAX edition of Queen Rock Montreal, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is nearing a milestone that might not have seemed possible from the outset.
See below for more on those titles,...

The January Box Office Slump Continues with Little Relief in Sight, as Top 6 Order Remains Unchanged
With a lack of any strong new studio releases, the Christmas holdovers not showing typical stamina (though some of moderate might), and some offbeat releases flexing a bit but not enough, domestic grosses fell to weakened $66 million this weekend.
That’s down 13 percent from last year, which had the benefit of two December releases (“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”) outgrossing anything in this weekend’s Top 10. 2024 releases, led by “Mean Girls” (Paramount) and “The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM) at No. 1 and No. 2 again, totaled about $30 million, which is one-third better than new films last year amassed. Still, the year-to-date box office is about 10 percent lower.
When the top six repeat in the same order, a dropoff is to be expected. Bleecker Street attempted to fill the void with their sci-fi acquisition “I.S.S.,” starring Ariana DeBose, but failed to make much impact with a seventh place showing of $3 million.

There was only one new wide release this weekend, and because of that, this week’s top six movies were essentially the same as last weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Before we get to this week’s recap, a quick apology that I was misinformed about how Neon was releasing Ava DuVernay‘s “Origin” this past weekend, which for the longest time was supposed to be wide, but ended up being just 125 theaters. More on that below.
The “Mean Girls” musical, starring Angourie Rice and Reneé Rapp (who just appeared as musical guest on “Saturday Night Live”), remained in first place with $11.7 million, which was down 59% from its opening weekend, as it reached $50 million domestic. Reportedly made for $36 million, it’s already looking profitable for Paramount Pictures with the $16.2 million it’s grossed overseas for a global total of $66.3 million.
