oddly emotional
framptonhollis5 December 2017
A weird (because what else could you expect from Guy Maddin?) tribute/semi-bio/portrait of a castrato named Dov Houle made along with Maddin's great avant garde comedy-drama-fantasy-sci-fi-horror-romance "Brand Upon the Brain!" and released on said film's Criterion Collection edition. Most filmmakers would likely portray Houle with a more straightforward documentary film, but Maddin takes a whole different route. As usual, his trademark style takes over the film's look and feel and creates an otherworldly atmospheric experience that packs a surprisingly emotional punch with a few odd laughs placed here and there. The editing is rabidly rapid (or rapidly rabid) and the visuals are so grainy it's surreal...it's an ocean of emotion that only Guy Maddin could make.
