What's Eating the Great Whites?
The Search for the Ocean's Super Predator (2013)
*** (out of 4)
Shark expert David Riggs serves as host in this documentary, which was seen by most as part of Discovery's Shark Week. Taking place in Australia, Riggs believes that a giant Great White shark was eaten by an unknown predator with perhaps a mouth bite as wide as five feet.
This documentary is pretty interesting on a number of levels but the biggest is the idea that there might be some sort of shark out there possibly as large as a whale. I'm not going to spoil any of the evidence given here since the documentary really plays out like a mystery as we're given bits of pieces of information until we build up to the ending when an object is placed in the water to try and go down 1900 feet.
Of course, shark lovers want shark action and we get plenty of that here. There's some terrific footage of various outings where the Great White sharks are on full display as well as Killer Whales. Such great footage of both creatures is certainly reason alone to watch this but there's no question that the mystery is also handled well and the evidence in laid out in a nice way.
