Emotionally rewarding episode

If you like these characters even a little bit, this episode will reward you. This is a peak and valley (and peak again) episode that explores hope and despair, through heart and determination and relationships. Well written and finely acted.

Saving the day

A slow one for "The Last Ship" before season one's finale. We get some time on firm ground (oh, here is Titus Welliver to play his characteristically shady and dangerous characters), and then most of the time back on the ship, where they will try the vaccine. Are the six guinea pigs going to survive the trials? Is it all going to run smoothly?

You know as well as I do that the answer is a rotund no.

Sadly, the episode is quite slow and drags a little bit. It is clear that it is trying to raise the tension, make us suffer for everyone involved, but it would have been better if we had known and cared for the characters better. And the plot developments are not very original either.

On top of that we get two conversations that reek a little bit. First, we get the customary: "why don't you have children, dr. Scott?, you are a woman" one, but a little bit before we have a surrealistic dialogue between Chandler and Quincy where they do an amazing job in objectifying and commodifying two human beings, Kelly and Ava (as if Chandler would have left behind two people that were kidnapped in the Russian ship; but the show does a 'great job' in transforming them into just 'Quincy's wife and daughter' and not their own entities). The problem with this scene is that the delivery and dialogue is so off that it comes all wrong.

All in all, "Trials" is another misstep in this first season, but the worst criticism is that it is slow.
