...and just enjoy an over-the-top plot

Warning: Spoilers
"The Last Ship" seems to be embracing the over-the-top, cheesy, ridiculous plot with what has to be a tongue-in-cheek approach. Between Ruskov's strange hobby of drinking tea while all is going to hell, Niels's craziness (toothpick included), and the most absurd plot developments (Ruskov seems to hate his own men as much as Captain Chandler hates to be in his ship), "The Last Ship" is crazy entertainment. Militaristic and flag-wagging as they come, but fun.

Captain Chandler (well, if you didn't know who he was, the character will remind you like a dozen times in this episode) and Tex are prisoners (oh, oh, poor them). Ruskov is asking for samples and doctor Scott to free them. What will Slattery do, thrown into a leader position he is not willing to take? What about Niels? Will he put a new toothpick in his mouth? And Captain Chandler? Why is his face so red?

The episode is silly as they come. It is not especially original (we all know what will happen, more or less, from second one), but takes to the absurd with a passion. Ruskov is not happy with killing his men (he never picks a random soldier, by the way, always his closest allies), he now infects them with the vaccine just to see if it works or not. And then goes and takes his tea while his ship is going underwater. Niels and Scott's conversation about how Niels is patient zero is hilarious. And let's not start with Captain Chandler and Ruskov's conversations.

Ironically enough, this makes for a quite enjoyable episode, where everyone seems to be enjoying the absurdness of it all. The action is entertaining, the pace fast and the acting good enough. And we even get the necessary touching moments.

We can't but hope "The Last Ship" keeps being so deliciously over-the-top.

This trainwreck gets worse by the episode. If you watch it the way you'd watch a cheesy sci fi b movie from the fifties, you won't be disappointed.

Other than that it's just a bunch of gung ho flag waving Michael Bay tripe.
