After her promotion, Sophie learns her husband Fred, a teacher, is being transferred to Tahiti. Not wishing to leave, she attempts a bluff and requests a divorce, secretly hoping he'll stay. Fred is determined to leave with their son Lucas.
Simon witnesses a violent assault but paralysed by fear he's unable to intervene. He tracks down the victim (Charlotte), earns her trust and looks after her during her convalescence. One day, he sees Charlotte's attacker again.
Claire's bag is stolen. This contains a letter written by the current President of the Republic ten years earlier. He asked his then pregnant mistress to have an abortion. Claire immediately warns the service of the president.
