Filmmaker Garrett Bradley explores the impact of a husband’s incarceration on a single mother in her documentary short film, “Alone.” She says her film offers a “critical way of talking about love and the universal importance of love for all people.” In an interview with TheWrap, Bradley said that the story came to her because she had worked with Desmond, the incarcerated subject of the film, in her first feature film, titled, “Below Dreams.” And she stayed close to the subject matter after production completed. “I was close with his family and got to know his girlfriend, Alone, and I got.

Filmmaker Garrett Bradley refuses to be just one thing. The daughter of a white mother and a black father, a New Yorker transplanted to New Orleans, self-taught and UCLA-trained, Bradley is, she says, "neither this nor that," though the more accurate description might be "both, and." "If you're somebody who grows up as an African American, just speaking from my own experience, I think you're born into a heightened sense of imagination," she explains, sipping Maker's Mark in a smoky French Quarter dive called Cosimo's, as jukebox Motown strains to be heard over the hum of conversation. "Because you have to become a shape shifter in order to succeed." This skill for metamorphosis is on display in Bradley's superb debut feature, "Below Dreams," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014 and is now available on VOD. The film's poetic realism, as I wrote in my review out of last year's New Orleans Film Festival,...

As Tribeca gears up for this year’s edition, one of last year’s Viewpoints selections, Garrett Bradley’s Below Dreams, opens in New York and Los Angeles. In the exclusive clip above, Bradley follows one of the characters of her atmospheric tryptic, Jamaine, as he hitches a ride home from a friend. Bradley had the following to say about the conception of Jamaine: In following Jamaine’s story I had hoped to replace the public imagination around African American men with gold teeth, seen on street corners and stoops or in transit with a real presence that could be heard and not just seen. As we head into December, awards season is well under way, and though we’ll have to wait until the spring for really big fish like the Oscars and the Golden Globes, this month has a respectable number of ceremonies of its own. Last night, celebrities gathered at Cipriani Wall Street in New York for the 2014 Gotham Independent Film Awards.
It was a long, casual ceremony for those in attendance, but when the night finally wrapped up, few could argue with the results. Birdman spread its wings and took home Best Feature, while Michael Keaton nabbed Best Actor for his revelatory role in the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film. Meanwhile, Julianne Moore continued her unstoppable march to the Oscars, receiving Best Actress for her devastating work as an Alzheimer’s-afflicted linguistics professor in Still Alice. And Laura Poitras was awarded Best Documentary Feature for her eye-opening Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour.

Deemed as his career best, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood leads all nominations for the 24th Gotham Independent Film Awards with winks in the Best Feature, Best Actor (Ethan Hawke), Best Actress (Patricia Arquette) and Breakthrough Actor (Ellar Coltrane) while Birdman, Nightcrawler, Under the Skin and Dear White People technically place second with two noms a piece in the five possible categories. Arguably 2014′s most prolific indie film in Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash failed to move the five-critic panels in the Best Film category and sans a Best Supporting category, means Miles Teller receives Best Award nom but J.K. Simmons will just have to wait it out for the Indie Spirit Awards to acknowledge his perf. A special Gotham Jury Award has already been awarded to the ensemble performance of the players of Foxcatcher (Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and Channing Tatum) shrewd Vanessa Redgrave perhaps didn’t get enough screen time...

The Independent Filmmaker Project officially fired the starting gun on the film awards season as always this morning with the announcement of this year's Gotham Awards nominees. Unsurprisingly, the most high-profile indie in the race — "Boyhood" — drew the most nominations with a whopping four mentions, including Best Feature. That's extremely high for the Gotham Awards and it sends IFC's campaign sailing into the season with a huge burst of wind. Speaking of revving the campaign engine on an early year release, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" landed in the Best Feature category. Two years ago Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" won that category but still didn't end up with a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Can Fox Searchlight find better luck? And speaking of Searchlight, "Birdman" landed Best Feature and Best Actor nominations. Fully expected. Filling out the Best Feature category was Ira Sachs' beautiful "Love is Strange" and Jonathan Glazer...

The Independent Filmmaker Project (Ifp) announced Thursday morning the nominees for the 24th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards. Highlighting the best of the year’s independent film, the Gotham Awards give an early bump to the smaller films that could get lost in the studio shuffle. In addition to the competitive awards, Tilda Swinton, director Bennett Miller, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos will be honored with tributes. 24 films received nominations this year, not including a special award handed bestowed to Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and Channing Tatum for their ensemble work in “Foxcatcher.” Voting for the primary awards begins on Nov. 19th at 12:01 Am Est and concludes on November 26th at 5:00 Pm Est. “Each year the Gotham...

Bowlmor Lanes had more than a few strike outs (a good thing in bowling) last night. SAG-aftra’s Indie Film Cast Party for the Tribeca Film Festival brought out the stars, neon bowling pins, and the Heinekens to celebrate the Union actors with a presence in the festival. Kevin Spacey—whose documentary, “Now,” about his Old Vic theater tour of “Richard III,” is screening at the festival—was bowling with “House of Cards” co-star Robin Wright. America Ferrera reigned in her new film and festival select “X/Y,” and at the lanes as well. Jon Favreau, at the festival for his film “Chef,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was also in attendance. The film centers on chef Carl Casper, played by Favreau, and his quest to build a food truck business. “Chef” also stars an ensemble cast that includes Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt, John Leguizamo, Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey Jr.,...

There's something about New Orleans. It's something gritty, sultry and beautiful and writer/director, Garrett Bradley, delves into it with her film, "Below Dreams." The film world premieres at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival on April 19, and Indiewire has the exclusive trailer. Read More: Garrett Bradley Explores Our Generation in 'Below Dreams' Here's the film's Tribeca synopsis: A reverie of images and sound, "Below Dreams" loosely follows the narratives of three very different people—Elliott, newly arrived from New York, single mother Leann, and unemployed father Jamaine—as they negotiate New Orleans’ streets, neighborhoods, and residents in search of an upward path to fulfill their dreams. But as each character experiences the city’s (and life’s) realities, it becomes clear these hopes and dreams are no longer possible, and that with change must also come sacrifice. Garrett Bradley’s impressive debut feature is shot verité documentary style to provide an unpolished,...

Although Garrett Bradley hasn't been around very long, she'll be making her feature debut at this years Tribeca Film Festival with "Below Dreams," a feature that shadows three different individuals in New Orleans as they try to fulfill their dreams. Speaking with Indiewire about her process, Bradley said, "A major part of being an artist for me is learning how to navigate as gracefully and honestly as possible that space between my vision and its execution." Tell us about yourself? I'm interested in justice, in juxtaposition, in problem solving, in the beauty of human complexity and American history. My work seems to gravitate towards these big ideas in different ways: some big, some small. Biggest challenge in completing this project? Filmmaking is hard but I can't say it's something we as filmmakers are necessarily avoiding. I think by nature, we're all fighters, working out some sort of personal cause or interest with each project.
