- The Machine tasks Root to find a janitor who has a mysterious past. However, when her presence endangers him, the Machine sends his number to Finch as well.
- The next number the Machine dispenses to Finch and the team belongs to Cyrus Wells, a custodian. His current blue collar job belies the fact that he has an MBA and was once a multimillionaire. What they also quickly learn is that the person who may figuratively pull the trigger on Cyrus, the target, is Root. Finch learns directly from Root that she has her own Machine-driven mission with Cyrus, her tasks (unlike Finch's) are laid out for her by the Machine immediately before she is to carry them out. All Root knows is that her overall goal is to protect the Machine, most specifically now from a competing Machine, namely Samaritan, which is close to being functional. Finch and Root will have to figure out if their Machine-driven tasks are incompatible, especially as Root has demonstrated in the past that the death of someone like Cyrus is acceptable collateral damage. They both have to figure out who truly is after Cyrus and what his role in getting Samaritan functional is. Root also has to decide if she will divulge to Cyrus her past connection with him, of which he is unaware.—Huggo
- Root under the guidance of The Machine breaks a prisoner named Billy Parsons out of his prison transport and uses his resemblance with a German to receive a package. Then she sends Billy back to prison with instruction of how to be protected along his sentence. She meets the janitor Cyrus Wells and immediately after, Finch receives his number from The Machine. Reese and Shaw follow Root and Cyrus and her are attacked by the Vigilance. Root forces a situation to arrest Cyrus and save him, and Finch calls Fusco to protect him. But Root poses of a FBI agent with a warrant and Fusco's captain asks him to release Cyrus. She learns that Cyrus was a wealthy man that donate his fortune after the murder of his two partners and friends and their co-workers. Decima uses a device to jam the contact of Root and The Machine, and Reese saves her, but Cyrus is kidnapped by the men of Decima. Root steals Finch's device and asks a doctor to implant it in her deaf ear. She updates the firmware, allowing her to contact The Machine without a cellphone. They learn that Decima intends to use Cyrus' retina to access a laboratory where a powerful chip was developed.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Open with Root pretending to be unconscious in the middle of the street in order to break a guy named Billy out of his prison transport. She uses him to help her break into a DoD supercomputing facility. Billy happens to look just like a German scientist, which allows him to steal a package for Root. After he gets the letter she sends him back to the police with some advice about how to handle prison.
Next Root goes to a large office building and begins chatting with a janitor named Cyrus. She takes him to breakfast and is surprised he doesn't ask too many questions. He thinks everything that happens is for a reason. She says her boss wants them to spend time to together and he invites her to the park with him for his walk.
At the park Root finds Finch. He tells her that Cyrus' number popped up at the exact same time she met him at his work. Finch thinks she's the one placing Cyrus in dangerous and will get the man killed. She assures him that Cyrus is okay and tells Finch about her visit with Control and losing the hearing in her ear. She think Finch should be more worried about Samaritan coming online. Finch tells Root that Cyrus the janitor was a multi-millionaire before age 35 and used to work in finance. She doesn't seem to care and texts Finch an ad for Primer X male enhancement product.
Finch tells Reese and Shaw to look after Root and Cyrus while he investigates the text.
Root goes to Cyrus' place with him. He is getting nervous. Root tosses Shaw a breakfast snack and tells her she doesn't need her help. Root looks at a picture of Cyrus with two other people from his old job. She asks about them but he doesn't want to talk. At this point a sniper begins shooting.
Finch has connected the picture Root sent him to a hidden message. At this point Vigilance shows up and starts shooting. Collier and several men start chasing Shaw.
Cyrus tells Root that guns make him very nervous.
Shaw takes out the sniper.
In the message Finch sees that Cyrus is also connected to Decima. We see Greer pull up in a car.
With Decima on their tail Root intentionally gets Cyrus arrested to keep him safe. Root disappears.
Finch tells Reese that Cyrus' new job might be the reason he's been targeted. He was recently given a background check.
Shaw tries to interview the sniper, who is immediately killed by Collier's men. Via walkie talkie Collier tells Shaw he thinks she's a former operative who was betrayed by the government. He's sealed off the building and offers her a chance to get revenge on those who wronged her in exchange for what she knows about Samaritan.
Fusco prepares to release Cyrus to Reese's custody. Root shows up instead and shows him an FBI badge and a federal warrant. She takes him out the back.
Root calls Reese on a payphone. He thinks she's making a mistake and putting Cyrus in jeopardy.
Root asks Cyrus what happened at his old job. He says the people in the picture are Alex and Sarah, his two biggest friends from college. A gunman came into their financial services office in 2009 and shot them both dead, wounding several others including Cyrus. Cyrus gave all of his money to charity.
Greer instructs his men to deploy a "countermeasure" which knocks out electronic communication in the area. Cyrus is grabbed and thrown into a van. Root is helpless to stop them.
Shaw is finally cornered by Collier and his men. He gives her one more chance to help them in trying to stop the government. She responds that she doesn't like his methods and begins taking guys out.
Finch has figured out Cyrus is one of few people with retinal access to a company called Maxwell Limited. Root walks into Finch's office and tells him Maxwell is a cover for an NSA lab working on the fastest computer chip in the world. Decima is using Cyrus to steal the hardware to run Samaritan. Root and Finch discuss the role of the machines in the world. She tells him she was behind the plan that killed Cyrus' friends. She thinks Finch's machine must be broken for it to care about people so much. Finch responds that that is actual the reason is works. She tells him that when Samaritan comes online plenty of people will die, but Root, Finch, Reese and Shaw will be first.
Root breaks into the home of a doctor and has him fix her ear.
Greer's team breaks into the building looking for the chip. Reese and Fusco show up and start taking guys out. Root follows soon after. Root ends up risking her life to save Cyrus, taking a bullet to the shoulder in the process. Unfortunately the chip has been taken by Greer's team.
A bruised Shaw returns to Finch's office.
Cyrus leaves for a new life. Root tells Finch she didn't tell Cyrus about her role in his friends' death. She thinks that wouldn't have helped him. Finch suggests they collaborate against Samaritan.
