Carl Weathers passed away peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 1, 2024, leaving an indelible mark on our pop culture. Weathers, who most recently joined the Star Wars galaxy as both a talented director and as the charismatic magistrate Greef Karga, is a legend whose years as a performer on both the big and small screens are worthy of celebration.
Weathers originally made his name in college football, but when his NFL career didn’t pan out, he moved into acting. His linebacker physique made him perfect to play heavyweight champion of the world Apollo Creed in the first Rocky film, and his pop culture immortality was assured. You’ll find him in several iconic ’80s movies, including in one of our genre favorites, Predator.
If you’re interested in seeking out the actor’s work beyond Rocky, Predator, and Star Wars, here are our picks for the best of Carl Weathers in movies and TV.

Bob Iger is tapping into what works at Disney with plans for new movies in the Frozen, Zootopia, and Toy Story franchises. In February, Iger teased returning to the studio’s known quantities to revitalize Disney’s animation arm, which has had its ups and downs in recent years. While we know about two Frozen sequels, news about another Toy Story movie has been missing from headlines until now. Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, Tim Allen appeared on The Tonight Show. During his interview, he said Disney contacted him and Tom Hanks about reprising their iconic roles from the Toy Story franchise for what could be Toy Story 5.
According to Allen, “one of the creators of the original series” is in charge of the new script. “Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on and actually said it was going to happen,” Allen said. “They have reached out...

Opera Man. Barry Egan. Billy Madison. Happy Gilmore. Dracula. Howard Ratner. Leo the Lizard??
If that last name doesn't sound familiar to you, it might very soon. As you can likely tell from the names preceding it, Adam Sandler has portrayed an impressively large number of memorable characters on-screen throughout his career. Although he's most well-known for his comedies (resulting in his being lauded when he takes on a dramatic project such as "Punch Drunk Love" or "Uncut Gems"), even a cursory glance at Sandler's resumé reveals his impressive range of projects in a variety of genres and mediums.
One of those mediums is animation, as best seen in "Eight Crazy Nights" or his successful "Hotel Transylvania" franchise. This November, Sandler hopes Leo the Lizard will become his newest triumph within the medium, when "Leo" premieres on Netflix. "Leo" isn't a mere voice acting gig for Sandler, either; he's a...

To infinity…and the endzone! The Toy Story gang is hitting the gridiron for a special collaboration between Disney, ESPN and the NFL called Toy Story Funday Football that will put today’s Atlanta Falcons-Jacksonville Jaguars game live inside of Andy’s bedroom. While we won’t see Buzz and Woody tossing Hamm around on the field, most of your favorite Toy Story characters will be featured elsewhere on the broadcast.
Through innovative tracking technology, animated characters will replicate what the professional football players do on screen, in addition to capturing scoreboards, sidelines happenings and penalty calls. Hey, at least we know Rex’s short arms will keep him safe from holding! As the Falcons-Jaguars game is being held at London’s Wembley Stadium, the game will air at 9:30 a.m. Est. The NFL and Disney are planning to take an upcoming game telecast to infinity and beyond.
ESPN+ and Disney+ will present a fully animated, real-time alternate telecast of the Oct. 1 game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons. The game, one of the league’s yearly London matchups, is ESPN’s first regular season contest that’s exclusive to ESPN+ (save for over-the-air broadcast in the teams’ home markets). The animated version will take place in Pixar’s Toy Story universe, on a field laid out on the floor of Andy’s room. (The league’s NFL+ platform will also carry the alternate presentation.)
The presentation, which Disney has dubbed “Toy Story Funday Football,” is arguably the most ambitious alternate-feed telecast of an NFL game to date, and in keeping with commissioner Roger Goodell’s aggressive push into streaming and alternate presentations beyond the league’s traditional broadcast footprint. The biggest and most pleasant surprise of the summer just keeps trucking along at the box office. It's not really going out on a limb to say that "Elemental" wasn't quite the flashiest Pixar offering in recent years upon release, both in terms of a noticeably underwhelming opening weekend total and also its actual quality compared to previous hits from the studio's heyday. But in a confidence-restoring performance, the animated film overcame the ignominy of initially landing in second place to "The Flop," er, I mean "The Flash" and has legged it out to become the biggest original film of the entire pandemic era, as /Film's Ryan Scott covered previously.
But this underdog success story doesn't end there.
Another week brings yet another significant milestone for the little element-based engine that could. The latest box office totals for "Elemental" peg the movie at $469,538,240 worldwide. Significant? Yeah, you could say so.

When it earned the worst opening weekend in studio history it seemed like “Elemental” was a sign that Pixar had lost the magic touch that made it a cornerstone of Disney’s box office dominance for years.
But over the past two months, “Elemental” has quietly won over audiences worldwide and steamed along to a $423 million total through this past Sunday, with $148 million coming from North America. While still not a theatrical hit, director Peter Sohn’s romantic tale is no longer the “Lightyear”-esque flop it once appeared destined to become, and has shown that Pixar is not as far off from returning to its past form as it seemed.
“It’s rare for any sort of film to earn a 5-times multiple in this box office,” Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian told TheWrap, noting how the film went from an anemic $29.6 million domestic opening to an overall domestic total of nearly $150 million.

This Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 article contains spoilers.
As the trilogy of Guardians movies comes to a close, you can rightly expect some emotional farewells and some tugs on the old heart strings. Superhero movies should also have heart, and just because this franchise features a gang of lovable misfits doesn’t mean it can’t tackle big issues. Quill’s dad, Ego, is a dick and his mum was killed when he was a boy. Gamora’s surrogate dad Thanos killed her and tortured her step sister Nebula. Drax’s wife and family were murdered by Ronan the Accuser. So these guys haven’t had easy lives, to say the least. But while it’s not a competition, if it was, Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper, would win.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Seven years ago, indie musician Trevor Powers announced the end of his project Youth Lagoon, under which he released three studio albums. “There is nothing left to say through Youth Lagoon,” he said at the time. “It will exist no more.” Now, Powers has turned the microphone on once again.
“I felt like I was in a chokehold,” Powers said in a statement. “Even though it was my music, I lost my way. In a lot of ways, I lost myself.”
His time away proved to be essential to moving forward.

After eight years, Trevor Powers is ready to return to Youth Lagoon. The artist has announced a new album, Heaven Is a Junkyard, out June 9th via Fat Possum, and shared the project’s first single, “Idaho Alien.”
Powers released three albums as Youth Lagoon before retiring the moniker in 2016, announcing that the project was “a space I no longer inhabit, nor want to inhabit.” Now, however, the dream pop artist reveals, “Youth Lagoon was never the chokehold. I was.”
The musician cites a harrowing reaction to an over-the-counter drug that coated his throat with a “non-stop geyser of acid” for freeing him from the shackles of self-loathing and inspiring him to revive Youth Lagoon. “I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to speak again, let alone sing,” Powers said in a statement. “It all felt symbolic in a way. Pixar and “box office flop” are usually not put together in the same sentence. Yet, the lows of “Lightyear” went to infinity and beyond it seemed.
After the “Toy Story” spin-off animated feature underperformed in theaters (and even saw some cineplexes fast-forward a same-sex kiss when showing the film), Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter addressed what went wrong with “Lightyear,” which starred Chris Evans as the “real” astronaut Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on. The film received mixed reviews and ultimately lacked the signature Pixar spark drawing audiences in.
“We’ve done a lot of soul-searching about that because we all love the movie. We love the characters and the premise,” Docter told The Wrap. “I think probably what we’ve ended on in terms of what went wrong is that we asked too much of the audience. When they hear Buzz, they’re like, ‘Great,...

Cool Stuff: Lee Unkrich's Definitive Compendium For The Shining Is Up For Pre-Order, But It's Pricey
What is it about "The Shining" that induces such obsession? In the 43 years since its release, Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of the book by Stephen King has inspired conspiratorial documentaries, tribute songs, countless fan theories, countless books, sequels both failed and succesful, and more. You're looking at someone who's always stuck by King's side in thinking the movie is an inferior rendering of the deep, psychological morass contained inside his chilling novel. But even I can't deny that there's something irresistible about Kubrick's film, something that beckons in the brief flashes of bizarre art hanging on the walls, the labyrinthine pattern of the hotel carpet, and the actual labyrinth outside the Overlook -- the beguiling hedge maze.
It seems "The Shining" will never be fully plumbed of its mysteries, but lifelong Kubrick obsessive and noted animated film director Lee Unkrich has given it the best try in years. Luxury...

Tim Allen has responded to Disney’s announcement of Toy Story 5.
On Wednesday (8 February), the studio revealed plans to make a fifth film in the Pixar franchise alongside a third Frozen film and a follow-up to Zootropolis (titled Zootopia in the US).
Bob Iger, Disney’s new CEO, told company investors in a call: “I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises.”
Iger promised the announcement of more details soon, but many social media users immediately began questioning whether Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, would be involved.
The comments came weeks after he was accused of flashing Pamela Anderson on the set of sitcom Home Improvements in 1991.
The actor publicly denied the claims, stating that it “never happened” and he would “never do such a thing”.

Children of the mid-1980s will likely recall the Toys "Я" Us Super Toy Run. The 1985 sweepstakes was one of the most alluring prizes offered to a toy-hungry youth, and most kids secretly had a plan of attack, should they win. Winners were given a shopping cart and five glorious, unfettered minutes to run through their local Toys "Я" Us, scooping whatever they wanted into it. You were allowed to keep whatever you could carry out. It was essentially a form of legal looting.
The modern cineaste's version of the Super Toy Run is, of course, the Criterion Closet. On a long-running video series put out by the Criterion Channel, notable filmmakers are invited to look through a small storage room filled floor-to-ceiling with Criterion Collection Blu-rays, and are permitted to take what they want. Unlike the Toys "Я" Us equivalent, unfortunately, no one full-arms an entire shelf of Blu-rays into a waiting shopping cart.

“Lost Ollie” has been found – and he’s on Netflix right now.
The four-episode series, loosely based on a William Joyce book (“Ollie’s Odyssey”), had been in development for more than a decade. What began as a project from Joyce’s own production entity was eventually rescued by Netflix and 21 Laps, one of the production companies behind “Stranger Things.” That’s when Shannon Tindle, an insanely talented designer and animator who had created Laika’s “Kubo and the Two Strings,” pitched his version of the story, which follows a lost toy (voiced by Jonathan Groff), who teams up with a pair of mismatched toys (played by Tim Blake Nelson and Mary J. Blige) and heads out in search of his owner, set deep in the American South.
And to chart Ollie’s odyssey, Tindle found the perfect partners – chiefly director Peter Ramsey, who is one of the most influential...

Are you ready to find “Lost Ollie?”
The upcoming Netflix series, which debuts August 24, is based on a story by William Joyce, whose stories have been adapted into “Robots,” “Meet the Robinsons” and “Rise of the Guardians.” It follows a lovable, hopelessly lost toy rabbit named Ollie (voiced by Jonathan Groff) as he searches for his young owner (Kesler Talbot).
His search sees him traversing many dangers in a surprisingly naturalistic deep south, as he teams up with a clown doll named Zozo (Tim Blake Nelson) and a battle-hardened bear (Mary J. Blige). And you can watch the trailer (above).

Since the ’90s, Pixar has made animated films exploring questions like: What if toys had feelings? (“Toy Story”). What if cars had feelings? (“Cars”). And what if feelings had feelings? (“Inside Out”). Now, it’s time for “What if elements had feelings?”
On Monday, Pixar announced its upcoming 27th film, “Elemental,” coming on June 16, 2023. The film follows two adorable beings made of fire and water who, despite their fundamental, elemental differences, realize they have a lot of similarities.
The logline reads, “The film journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.”
Peter Sohn, who directed Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” and the “Partly Cloudy” short, will helm the new film. It will be produced by Denise Ream. The...

Pixar is back in actual cinemas this year with "Lightyear," a spin-off of "Toy Story" that is not about Buzz the toy, and is definitely not about Buzz the real human astronaut, no matter what Chris Evans says. Instead, this is a movie about the in-universe sci-fi blockbuster that got turned into a cartoon, which then got turned into a line of toys.
While the first couple of trailers were vague in how much they revealed about the plot, leaning more on pretty visuals and the magic of David Bowie, the latest trailer tells us a lot more about what we can expect from the new Pixar film. Among other things,...

"I hope you're ready for action, because all we needed was a pilot." Disney + Pixar have revealed the final official trailer for Lightyear, the sort of prequel to the Toy Story movies, focusing on Buzz Lightyear as a spin-off solo movie about the Space Ranger. Chris Evans is voicing the actual Buzz, the astronaut within the Toy Story universe who inspired the action figure. The plot involves Buzz being marooned on an alien planet and having to figure out a way to get home. Along with Evans, the voice cast includes Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Taika Waititi, Peter Sohn as Buzz's robot companion, Sox the cat, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. This trailer features a Lot of big reveals - with some character unveilings (including who Taika voices!) as well as the story involving them jumping ahead in time. "Buzz!!" During the Oscars ceremony last night broadcast live on ABC, Disney debuted an extended TV spot for Pixar's Lightyear, this sort of prequel to the Toy Story movies, focusing entirely on Buzz Lightyear as a spin-off solo movie about the Space Ranger. Chris Evans is voicing the "real" Buzz Lightyear, the astronaut within the Toy Story universe who inspired the action figure. The plot involves Buzz being marooned in an alien planet and having to figure out a way to build a spaceship and get home. But that only seems like the beginning of this story! Along with Evans, the full voice cast includes Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Taika Waititi, Peter Sohn as Buzz's robot companion, Sox the cat, plus Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. This is primarily just a recut version of the latest official trailer, with one or two shots added,...

In one of the more unexpected spin-offs, Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear is getting an origin story, though this time it’s not about Woody’s rival-turned-best friend, it follows the man himself, which is loosely based on the direct-to-video feature Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins. The origin story follows the astronaut during his test flight as he explores new galaxies for Star command to come in peace. Interglacial warlord, Emperor Zurg, tries to threaten all that comes his way, and it becomes Buzz’s mission to stop him at any cost. The film is set for theaters this summer, but

Pixar’s forthcoming Toy Story prequel Lightyear has put a same-sex kiss back in following an internal backlash to Disney’s handling of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation.
A source familiar with the production confirmed the change to Deadline. Variety was the first to report the move.
The embrace is between Hawthorne, a character voiced by Uzo Aduba, and another woman. The characters’ relationship itself was never called into question during production, the source said, but a kiss between the characters was excised before being restored last week. Pixar was one of the loudest voices criticizing Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s handling of the Florida bill, and said in a letter leaked to the press that the company had suppressed same-sex elements in Pixar projects.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will soon sign the bill, which would limit what teachers can say about gender and sexuality in the classroom.

One classic animated movie from the early 2000s I never got to actually own is Treasure Planet. Now I am a ’90s kid, so I think I grew up during a time where the best animated movies were coming out. And I’m talking about the classics beyond those animated movies everyone and their parents know. Some examples include the very famous Toy Story movies, Tarzan, Aladdin, and the Lion King, just to name a few. Speaking of those classics, at least two of those movies have received the live-action movie treatment. Now I’m pretty sure Toy Story will never get

‘Lightyear’ New Trailer: Chris Evans’ Buzz Lightyear Battles Alien Robots in Pixar Hero Origin Story
Beyond infinity lies the story of the real Buzz Lightyear: the hero who inspired the “Toy Story” toy.
Meet Space Ranger Buzz (Chris Evans), who sets out to save his fellow astronauts after a year of being “marooned” on an intergalactic planet.
“A year of work for a four-minute flight,” Buzz explains in the latest trailer for Disney-Pixar film, “Lightyear.” “Isn’t that something?”
With David Bowie’s “Starman” setting the “Guardians of the Galaxy” meets “Toy Story” tone, “Lightyear” skyrockets into adventure, reminding viewers that every hero has to start somewhere. Add in a cute robo-cat named Sox, voiced by Peter Sohn, and Buzz is one-half of a buddy adventure saga of epic proportions. Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, and Taika Waititi voice a group of astronaut recruits, while Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. round out the ensemble cast.

David Bowie’s catalog has been acquired by Warner Chappell Music, extending a recent string of high-profile music rights deals.
Financial terms were not officially disclosed, but press reports pegged the value at more than $250 million. The rise of streaming as an economic engine, along with the mushrooming array of content into which music can be incorporated, has pushed catalog prices higher. Recent deals have been sewn up by Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and the estate of James Brown, among many other artists.
This agreement follows one reached last year between Warner Music Group (parent of Warner Chappell) and the Bowie estate. Under that 2021 deal, Warner Music has licensed worldwide rights to Bowie’s recorded music catalog from 1968.
The global rights deal covers the entire body of work of Bowie, who died of liver cancer in 2016. The catalog includes songs like “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Starman,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Fame,...

When David Bowie died on Jan. 10, 2016, the tragedy was alleviated to a degree because he’d just released one of his greatest records. Blackstar, which came out just two days before — on Bowie’s birthday — was a glimpse into the genius mind of an artist who knew his days are numbered. Solemn, deliciously jarring, and endlessly surprising, the album put a period on a life rife with innovation, imagination, and an innate inability to stagnate.
