Last week, we had fun chiming in on how Sundance 2016 might look like with our Sundance predictions list. Our series was exactly one short from the promised 75. We decided to switch things up this year. Our last pick is reserved for what is a next to impossible, needle in the haystack guess at what films might break into the short film sections. Out of the 8000 plus submissions the Sundance Short Film programmers will receive, they’ll end up selecting a little less than a hundred short films. Here are some ideas as to who and what could show up.
The Bulb and The Procedure
No stranger to Park City, Calvin Reeder has supplied the fest with features such as The Oregonian (2011), The Rambler (2013) and could very well bring this Kickstarter pairing to public access television blitz and X-Files love. Production wrapped in August. Actors Linas Phillips and Christian Palmer star.

The Rules of Fight Club. Do talk about this indie feautre. For his feature debut, first time director Knate Gwaltney choose a storyline that is more outrageous than everything he might have produced for the numerous series: Jackass films and television items included. Featuring Boyd Holbrook (who broke out big last year at Sundance with Little Accidents – see still above and might be at the fest with his own short, Peacock Killer), Cardboard Boxer went into production late last year with the young star being joined by the acting ranks of Thomas Haden Church, Terrence Howard, Rhys Wakefield and Macy Gray. On the tech side, Cinematographer Peter Holland (Drunktown’s Finest) lenses.

Exclusive: Producer and director Madeleine Sackler (The Lottery, Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus) and actor and director Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl, Little Accidents, Behind the Candelabra) have teamed to launch their own development and production company, Madbrook Films. The New York City-based shingle will produce passion projects from both partners as well as other writers and directors, starting with the short film Peacock Killer.
Adapted from Sam Shepard’s story of the same name, Peacock Killer marks Holbrook’s debut as a writer and director. The film stars Boardwalk Empire‘s Shea Whigham and True Grit‘s Elizabeth Marvel in the tale of reconciliation between a man and his dog after a peacock comes between them. Holbrook filmed the project this winter in upstate New York and was completed with the help of a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, which raised over $17,000 for the project.
