Fred's marriage to Violet is put into question when his surly daughter Marlene returns. She is dead set against the proposed union, feeling that her dad is abandoning the memory of her mother. She poisons their relationship suggesting to Violet that Fred is out to get her savings and Violet returns the ring. Sister Mary Cynthia cares for June Dillen, soon to become a first time mum, who is deaf and dumb. Her greatest fear is that her child will be born with her condition. Trixie comes to grips with her drinking problem. Maureen Gadsby is suffering from extreme morning sickness but Dr. Turner has a new drug for her that works just fine - thalidomide. Delia suggests a solution to their problem and suggests that she and Patsy simply share an apartment like many other young women. Their happiness is short-lived however.
