1.89: Sonnet #13: Probably I'm missing something
bob the moo22 December 2014
Seeing that this sonnet was a low number, I already knew that this would probably mean that the theme of it was probably going to be that of immortality or survival of beauty by virtue of reproduction. This was indeed the case and, although a bit morbid in how it does it, it is cheering if read in the right way – and in particular I liked the final line a great deal. The film takes this sonnet and sets it at the new Yankee Stadium; the reason for this may work better for those familiar with the team than I am. Having only been to one baseball game (a 1- 0 win for Pittsburgh over Arizona), I don't know much of the history or stories of the sport at all, so there may be more in this short film that I am aware of.

In particular lingering over one specific seat number (23 – a reference to Don Mattingly?) but more obviously the line "who lets so fair a house fall to decay" spoken while the camera takes in the front of the stadium. I guess this may be linked to the team enduring, and creating legacies for those growing up with the team now, however it is not totally clear. At another point I thought perhaps the father/son feel to the film would be the thing, (with "a game with pops" familiar even to those of us to whom it is foreign), but this didn't come through as totally as I expected. Technically it looks good and the actor Haqq is clear and crisp in his delivery (with only some so-so mixing in one place drowning out the voice-over a bit), but it is the lack of context that bugged me. I hope it is just my lack of Yankee-specific knowledge that left me short, but I do wish the film had made the theme more accessible because either way it was interesting.
