The star of a low-budget basic cable sci-fi show celebrates the fan power that managed to convince her network to give the show a second season, despite generally poor performance. Returning home to her partner, she finds that this fan-power is not always positive, as one such fan arrives at her door to help strengthen the weakest part of season one – the origin story.
There are aspects of this short to really like; the focus on geek culture as a setting for the "dangerously obsessive fan" story is a decent one, and I enjoyed the way it linked to the creation of a character within the logic of the superhero genre. This link allows for the line between reality and fiction to be muddied very nicely, even down to the ending where in the mind of the fan there remains a lot of crossover between these two aspects. The casual violence of the film is also impacting early on; the fan is totally detached from the quite horrific actions he is doing. The problem is though that the film doesn't build around these strengths enough.
Mostly this is down to the budget, because the film has a very basic look to it and feels very workmanlike throughout. This is a shame because what the film really needed was a better control of atmosphere, to bring that darkness out more, and have more visual polish and presence. As it is, the rather "direct" delivery does limit the potential to engage, and it is never as smart or effective as it could have been. A decent try, but falls short of the mark despite some good elements.
