Nearly 10 months after Mariah Carey‘s disastrous New Year’s Eve performance that spurred a bitter he-said-she-said between the diva’s camp and Dick Clark Productions, longtime Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve host Ryan Seacrest remains firm that the crew wasn’t to blame.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen Thursday, the 42-year-old Live with Kelly and Ryan host was asked by a caller what was going through his head during Mimi’s Nye nightmare.

What Are You Watching? is a weekly space for The A.V Club’s film critics and readers to share their thoughts, observations, and opinions on movies new and old.
When midnight struck on the New Year, I was in a third-floor loft, watching a 35mm print of McCabe & Mrs. Miller. The pops of illicit fireworks and the sound of “Auld Lang Syne” in the bars below and across the street happened in the midst of a quiet stretch in the film’s drawn-out climax, while the Warren Beatty character, McCabe, was evading three hired killers in the snow. As New Year’s entertainment, it was a perverse choice, commemorating not only the deaths of Leonard Cohen, whose early songs provide much of the music, and Vilmos Zsigmond, the film’s celebrated cinematographer, but also a defeatist vision of American oblivion—of the little guy and his small, crude ...

Ryan Seacrest has finally addressed Mariah Carey‘s blundered live New Year’s Eve performance.
During the Thursday morning broadcast of On Air with Ryan Seacrest, the longtime Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve host remained diplomatic while he explained the night’s events, which have devolved into a bitter he-said-she-said between the diva’s camp and Dick Clark Productions, which produced the show.
“It is difficult to perform in Times Square. I mean, she had done it before because she was the first musical guest that we had had live when I started doing the show a decade ago.

Jenny McCarthy is not on #TeamMariah.
After Mariah Carey fumbled her way through three awkward performances on Saturday for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, the show’s co-host Jenny McCarthy claims she immediately felt for the diva.
However, any “sympathy stopped … the moment she accused Dick Clark Productions of sabotaging her performance,” McCarthy said on her SiriusXM show Tuesday morning.
“I know what it’s like to have your prompter go out. I know what it’s like to have my inner ears go out. It’s scary, and it’s like your brain...

Mariah Carey‘s not so rockin’ New Year’s Eve performance was not due to a lack of rehearsal, a representative for the singer tells People.
The rep says that Carey rehearsed at 3 p.m. “She went through vocals and her team ran through sound. All was well at rehearsal. She was prompt for rehearsal and her performance.”
In photos and a video posted by TMZ, Carey can be seen rehearsing with backup dancers prior to her performance for the ABC special Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest on the Times Square stage.

The fallout over Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance on ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest continues.
During the program, Carey’s live TV showcase -- a performance of “Auld Lang Syne,” “Emotions” and “We Belong Together” -- was plagued by technical difficulties, leaving the singer stranded on stage as it was revealed she was lip synching. The singer played it off, joking with the audience as ABC cut to shots of the crowd.
An eyewitness in Times Square tells Et that it was clear something was wrong: "She just stood there and didn't even try to play it off," adding that "everyone in the media section just looked at each other and started cringing."

Dick Clark Productions is hitting back at claims from Mariah Carey’s camp that her New Year’s Eve performance was sabotaged – and even denies that there were any technical problems during the show.
“To suggest that … would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd,” the company said in a statement to Billboard. “In very rare instances, there are, of course, technical errors that can occur with live television, however, an initial investigation has indicated that Dcp had no involvement in the challenges associated with Ms. Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance.

As the New Year arrives, we salute a few favourite TV episodes depicting this momentous time of year...
New Year is a time for reflection on the past and resolution for the future, an opportunity to consider what you’ve achieved and what you’re yet to work on. It’s also a time to stay up well past midnight, partying the night away with friends and family, potentially embarrassing yourself in the process. That dichotomy ensures that the New Year is fertile ground for television, and the finest comedies and dramatic series use the moment to allow for contemplation amidst the alcoholic excesses. Here are twenty New Year episodes that offer an entertaining take on the aeons-old celebration - from emotional character pieces to geeky genre takes and old-fashioned barrages of seasonal comedy.

Mariah Carey suffered a performance nightmare live on TV, unable to hit her famous high notes and to sync up with lyrics.
Carey’s live performance on ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest from Times Square did not go smoothly after technical difficulties left her stranded on stage.

After a solid performance of “Auld Lang Syne,” the trouble started when Carey began to sing “Emotions,” when she announced, “We can’t hear,” and then started talking to the audience. Later, when trying to perform “We Belong Together,” the singer fell out of sync with the music, revealing that she was not singing live. She eventually dropped her handheld microphone to her side and walked to the back of the stage while ABC cut away to excited fans dancing in the streets.

Mariah Carey may have laughed at herself after her disastrous New Year’s Eve performance, but apparently, Josh Groban can’t!
The 35-year-old singer removed a tweet he sent out in the early hours of Sunday morning, mocking the “Fantasy” singer as sound problems caused her to fumble her way through three painfully awkward performances on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.
“Any time one of the greatest voices of my generation lip syncs, an angel loses its wings,” Groban joked in the deleted tweet, while watching Carey drop the (figurative) ball live from New York City’s Times Square.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s can be a disorienting time - an inescapable amount of parties, reflections on the closing year, and hope for the one to come. For the more somber sort, it’s the feeling of being alone in a series of crowded rooms you can’t escape. New Year’s Eve is simply the worst holiday - like “Auld Lang Syne” it proposes joy and companionship, but always comes up feeling solemn.
Such is the emotional terrain of Billy Wilder’s classic romance The Apartment, a very best Best Picture winner. In its indifferent, wintery New York City, it’s easy to feel isolated and cast aside when everyone else goes on about their lives - but the very thing that sets you apart is what will make you feel less alone when you see it reflected in another person. We've experienced some major celebrity deaths in 2016, but I don't know about you, but I'm getting really tired of people blaming the year itself as if it's some sort of sentient creature stalking our icons and taking them away too soon. But instead of making a "clever" quip on Twitter about it, the team at Friend Dog Studios actually came up with a creative way to channel their displeasure with the past twelve months: imagining what a horror movie might look like that did feature 2016 as a personified, sentient killer. My favorite part? The slowed down, creepy cover of "Auld Lang Syne" — that's another cliche that should go away immediately, but it's still in full swing and it works exceptionally well here.

Chicago – The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Cso) has come up with the perfect celebration for the pre-holiday weekend, presenting Frank Capra’s classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life in Concert.” On Dec. 10th and 11th, 2016. The Cso will accompany the soundtrack on a restored version of the film.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
This is “It’s a Wonderful Life” (Iawl) as you’ve never seen it before, restored to a brilliant print and with the original Dimitri Tiomkin soundtrack score enhanced by the majesty of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The film is projected above the orchestra, and with each symphonic moment in the story, the musicians and choral singers take over the music live. Iawl had many variations of themes in the soundtrack, so besides the Tiomkin original score, there are snippets of WW2 songs “Over There” and “This is the Army, Mr. Jones,” along with the holiday songs “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,...
