Nick's Law – Purgatory
Tweekums1 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This, currently the final episode of 'Nick's Law' opens immediately after the previous one ended. Nick captures Firat Astan, the man for had just killed his wife, and it is unclear whether he will kill him or arrest him. Before he does anything news breaks that a group of 'Chechen' gunmen have taken over a TV newsroom and are threatening to kill the hostages if the authorities don't hand over Astan. The police soon determine that those hostage takers are in fact Russian. A call to the phone of one of the Russians who were torturing Nick in the previous episode indicates a link between them and Senator Revenbrook; the man responsible for the upcoming privatisation of Hamburg's docks. Astan knows that if Nick hands him over he will face an unpleasant death at the hands of the Russians so tells him that he has something that will lead to the end of the hostage crisis. It is implied that it is something linking Revenbrook to the sexual abuse of a minor. If the hostages are to be saved Nick will have to protect the man he wants to see dead and deal with plenty of people who want to take Astan off him by force.

This episode nicely wraps up the Firat Astan plot arc and possibly also the story of Hamburg cop Nick Tschiller… although I hope not as his four episodes have been pretty good. The way this follows on from the previous episode means it is highly advisably to watch that first as otherwise things won't make as much sense. As one would expect there is plenty of action and Nick takes quite a few more beatings before the story is over. The action is fairly intense with plenty of fights, quite a few shootings and a scene where Nick's partner Yalcin is threatened by what look like special forces soldiers in a helicopter! The tension is kept high throughout and there is a decent sense of mystery concerning just what Astan's 'insurance policy' contains and how it affects Revenbrook and the Russians. The cast does a fine job; the scenes between Til Schweiger and Erdal Yildiz, as Nick and Astan, are particularly good but the rest are pretty good too. Overall I really enjoyed this episode.

These comments are based on watching the episode in German with English subtitles.
