Terrific continuation albeit not as excellent as the pilot
The Exterminator isn't nearly as excellent as the pilot episode, but much like the previous episode, it's another great entry of the first season. My only quibble is that while the pacing's OK particularly in the first half, the second half did drag a bit. But everything else turned out fine.

The performances still shine and the relationships are still interesting. The script is fine and continues to deliver on the thrills, the comedy, and the drama, the directing is solid and gives a great atmospheric tone to the entire episode, the editing is sharp, the music score's still pretty good, and the climax is really riveting. So, overall, not excellent, but still great episode. :)

Liv's "Dead" Personality!
gab-1471223 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"The Exterminator" continues iZombie's strong first season in an emotionally-layered episode that gives us more insight on who these characters are and how they are connected to one another. With Liv eating the brain of a cold-blooded contract killer, her personality becomes emotionally numb which is helpful to have when she learns that Major is seeing someone else. Major continues to play the "typical hunk" dude, but his charisma is earning him points and I feel like he may be a major player in episodes to come. We get to learn more about Blaine and see what his evil plans are. We see more insight in Liv's relationship with her roommate, ADA Peyton Charles (played by the wonderful Aly Michalka). The case of the week is interesting, but the characterization is more interesting.

In this week's episode, Liv eats the brain of an emotionless sociopath which dulls her senses of humanistic feelings. He was also a hit man who murdered some tech-savvy entrepreneur- a case that Liv's roommate is prosecuting. Meanwhile, there was a zombie sighting that was reported. Liv and Ravi decide to check it out, and Liv discovers its her friend from the party where she became a zombie. She is now a fully-fledged zombie, but Ravi plays with fire trying to bring her back to a more human state. Major finally moves on from Liv. Speaking of Major, he works at a halfway house where one of his charges, Jerome turns out missing. Jerome actually may be part of the bigger picture for Blaine's harvesting plans.

This is a great episode that has some excellent emotional beats. The characterization is ripe. The case of the week is decent enough only if it allowed Clive to have some good lines. The humor may not be as prevalent thanks to Liv's "dead" personality, so we should be thankful for Ravi. Ravi, be careful when you see a well with a zombie in it next time?

My Grade: A

How to be a psychopath
tenshi_ippikiookami17 December 2015
In this third episode, Olivia eats the brains of a hit and run victim, and she discovers that the dead was actually a contract killer, involved in one of Peyton's cases.

The episode is fun, not complicated and keeps things going, with a new case, relationships evolving (specially Peyton and Olivia's) and a new personality for Olivia. Rose McIver does a good enough job, but the voice-over constantly remembering us that she has no feelings and is cold-blooded (more than normally, of course) because she ate the brains of a psychopath, makes the characterization very weak. If we have to be remembered all the time that she is very cooooooooold and detached and will see someone she knows be killed without caring, there's a problem. So this episode new "power" is kind of watered down. The case is good enough, on the other hand, so it will keep us interested. And we also have the interesting discovery of another zombie...

On a last note, Blaine's plans seem clearer now, and it is starting to look as if he has a very very bad idea in mind...
