Moviegoing remains in a sling, evident in Universal’s The Fall Guy currently coming in lower than expected with $28M this weekend. Perhaps Furiosa and Garfield can bring some zing over Memorial Day weekend at the end of the month.
Both hit three-week tracking Thursday, with the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow Mad Max prequel eyeing a $40M-$50M domestic opening over the Friday-Monday span of May 24-27 with Sony/Alcon Entertainment’s Garfield at $35M.
Earlier this week, some box office prognosticators believed it would be a closer race between the two at $30M+ apiece over four days, with the orange cat voiced by Chris Pratt having the edge. But George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Prequel, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has the firepower of Imax and PLFs and a Cannes Film Festival world premiere as a global loudspeaker.
Garfield, of course, is tracking with families and older adults. Unaided...

In celebration of International Mermaid Day (it’s a thing!), Disney Junior has released the first official teaser for Ariel, its upcoming series based on The Little Mermaid — and it features an iconic Disney villain like you’ve never seen her before.
Ursula, typically presented as a fabulously menacing sea witch, is now (gasp!) a mentor to young Ariel. The teaser includes a shot of Ariel and her friends taking part in Ursula’s “magic camp,” where she will presumably school them in witchcraft. Watching Ariel greet her as “Tante Ursula!” with a big smile on her face will surely...

Disney's live-action reimaginings of beloved classics have made it their mission to update the story's more outdated ideals and expand the canvas of who is being represented on screen and how. Dating back to their first feature in 1937, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," the characters in Disney's animated films are mostly white, always straight, and follow the same damsel in distress narratives. The movies reflected the more conservative values of the time.
But today, as society continues to evolve, these new takes on classic fairy tales take many steps to diversify. The remakes give the princesses more chutzpah, allowing them to save themselves without needing the prince. "Beauty in the Beast" made LeFou openly gay (although it is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment). "The Little Mermaid" made waves when Halle Bailey, a Black actress, was cast as the curious redhead Ariel. Javier Bardem is currently riding the success of his latest film, Dune 2. The Spanish actor is a well-known face within the film fraternity, and he has delivered several noteworthy performances throughout his career. Bardem’s prowess as an actor is irrefutable. There’s a reason we would never advise someone to audition for American Idol using one of the judges’ own songs — it doesn’t always end well.
But that didn’t stop 22-year-old Madaí Chakell from attempting to soar where so many others before her have stumbled, performing “I Kissed a Girl” in front of Katy Perry herself. And while it wasn’t a total crash-and-burn moment, Katy was visibly confused by what she heard.

Ken is far too sensitive to peer pressure, which is a good thing for Oscar fans because Ryan Gosling will officially perform “I’m Just Ken” at this year’s ceremony despite initially showing hesitancy. Now, will it stand as one of the best performances in Oscar history or will it go full Rob Lowe/Snow White?
I fully expect “I’m Just Ken” to be a showstopper, especially now that Gosling has confirmed he’ll be the one behind the mic and it won’t be given to somebody not even associated with the movie. However, admittedly sometimes that works out extremely well, as when Robin Williams performed “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. And while that song lost to Tarzan’s “You’ll Be In My Heart”, you can’t tell me you remember Phil Collins’ performance that night.
Another oddball performance for a song...

Although Rachel Zegler previously affirmed doing most of her stunts in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, it may not have proved enough to justify her recent victory at a fan-voted award ceremony among online users who vigorously continue to oppose the verdict!
Of course, with it being awards season, there will be discord among people from all corners of the internet over who won what. Zegler, the star of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and The Hunger Games prequel, has become the current trendy subject of such online discourse.
And it all transpired after this year’s People’s Choice Awards, which saw the 22-year-old winning The Action Movie Star of the Year award.
Rachel Zegler in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
Who knows if this development would’ve sparked the same response and contention had it not been for the talents she bested in receiving the honor.

Sofia Coppola is breaking her silence on her unrealized TV series starring Florence Pugh.
Announced in May 2020, the project was a five-episode adaptation of Edith Wharton‘s novel “The Custom of the Country.” It was to be distributed by Apple TV+.
On the heels of her movie Priscilla, which released in November 2023, Sofia does not currently have any confirmed movies or TV shows in the works.
The 52-year-old director elaborated on why Apple shut down her “Custom of the Country” series at the end of 2021.

“They pulled our funding,” Sofia explained to the New Yorker. “It’s a real drag. I thought they had endless resources.”
Speaking of executives at the company, Sofia added, “They didn’t get the character of Undine. She’s so ‘unlikable.’ But so is Tony Soprano! … It was like a relationship that you know you probably should’ve gotten out of a while ago.

Universal’s film empire is taking a major bow after placing No. 1 in marketshare at the 2023 global box office, a feat no studio has been able to pull off since Disney rose to dominance in 2016.
The 24 movies released by Universal generated an estimated $4.91 billion in worldwide ticket sales, compared to an estimated $4.83 billion from the 17 titles released by Disney in what made for a relatively close race both in North America and at the foreign box office. Even a week ago, no one in Hollywood was sure Universal would prevail, especially overseas.
Universal’s total haul included $1.94 billion in domestic revenue, while Disney’s domestic tally was $1.9 billion. Internationally, Universal prevailed with $2.97 billion. Disney’s offshore revenue was $2.92 billion.

As cultural institutions crank out their various “Best of 2023” lists, there’s one year-end list that always feels especially poignant. The Library of Congress has announced its 2023 class of additions to the National Film Registry — a collection of titles that the United States National Film Preservation Board has deemed as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” This year, additions include Home Alone (1990), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Love & Basketball (2000), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), and more.
“Films are an integral piece of America’s cultural heritage, reflecting stories of our nation for more than 125 years,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “We’re grateful to the film community for collaborating with the Library in our goal to preserve the heritage of cinema.” Among this aforementioned film community, the Library of Congress Blog highlighted Spike Lee’s fifth entry into the registry with his 2000 satire Bamboozled, as well...

Studio Ghibli films take us on awe-inspiring journeys to other realms where cutesy animals and cozy vibes intersect with religion, environmentalism, and Japanese history. But this mix of child-like curiosity and mature contemplation doesn’t totally account for the studio’s sizable queer fanbase. And still, there’s something about Ghibli specifically that resonates with queer people, despite there being little obvious representation to speak of across the studio’s forty-year history.
On the face of it, much of this appeal can be chalked up to Ghibli’s fiercely strong female protagonists. Although the likes of Kaguya, Arrietty, and Nausicaä don’t actively identify as queer, gay audiences will happily follow them to hell and back. Like flying machines and delicious food porn, gay icons in this vein are woven throughout the studio’s tapestry, but only if you’re actively looking for them. A dubious brand strategy and underperforming films like Wish and The Marvels have led the once-golden studio into disarray
For its 100th anniversary this year, Disney received a bucket of ice-cold water to the face. It may sound momentary, but somehow it’s the gift that has been giving all year, from the box office nosedive of Marvel’s Ant-Man sequel, to lower-than-expected international numbers for an expensive Little Mermaid remake, to series-low grosses on Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones sequel. This continued all the way to November, when The Marvels outright flopped and Disney’s 100th-birthday cartoon Wish opened to an underwhelming number. It marks the first year since 2014, pandemic era not included, that the company failed to produce a billion-dollar hit.
Financially speaking, the only bright spots were Elemental and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, both of which held up following surprisingly soft opening weekends. And while Guardians scored good reviews,...

Disney opened a new corporate era with a mixed-to-positive batch of quarterly results, reporting better-than-expected revenue and earnings Wednesday but also more than $1 billion in charges.
Reporting numbers for the first time in the three newly defined divisions of Sports, Entertainment and Experiences, the media giant said total revenue in its fiscal fourth quarter perked up 5% from a year ago to $21.2 billion. Earnings per share of 82 cents more than doubled from the prior-year mark of 30 cents. The earnings figure handily beat Wall Street analysts’ forecasts, though the revenue line fell a bit short.
Streaming paced the quarter, with Disney+ having its best performance in some time. The flagship streaming service added 7 million core subscribers during the quarter to reach 112.6 million, with the company crediting the debut of theatrical titles Elemental and Little Mermaid, as well as series Ahsoka and Moving. Including Disney+ Hotstar, the total subscriber count for Disney+ is now 150.2 million.

Sofia Coppola is opening up about two movies that she turned down.
The famed 52-year-old director has worked on projects such as Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation and, most recently, Priscilla, which stars Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny as Elvis and Priscilla Presley.
While she’s got some big projects to her name, Sofia opted out of directing a Little Mermaid movie. She also passed on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. She explained why in a recent interview.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Sofia explained that she hit a “breaking point” with the Little Mermaid movie, which should not be confused with Disney’s new live-action The Little Mermaid, which starred Halle Bailey.

Sofia Coppola turned down directing 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn’ because she found the imprinting-werewolf "too weird".In 'Breaking Dawn - Part 2', Jacob (Taylor Lautner) bizarrely imprints on Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward's (Robert Pattinson) young daughter Renesmee, which many fans of the blockbuster teen vampire movies have been creeped out by.And it just so happens to be the reason the 'Lost in Translation' director turned down the job.Sofia told Rolling Stone: “We had one meeting, and it never went anywhere.I thought the whole imprinting-werewolf thing was weird. The first was the final ‘Twilight’ movie, ‘Breaking Dawn’ which Summit Entertainment split into two films that were released in 2011 and 2012 and grossed a combined $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, reports Variety.
Coppola told Rolling Stone that her journey with the final ‘Twilight’ movie lasted only a single meeting. “We had one meeting, and it never went anywhere,” the director said, quoted by Variety. “I thought the whole imprinting-werewolf thing was weird. The baby. Too weird! But part of the earlier ‘Twilight’ could be done in an interesting way. I thought it’d be fun to do a teen-vampire romance, but the last one gets really far out.”

Do you smell what The Rock is cookin’? If so, you’d know that Dwayne Johnson isn’t exactly pleased with a new wax figure, which features a rather inaccurate depiction of the star. Johnson has taken to social media to express his dismay with the wax figure, particularly in how it shows him with a far lighter skin tone, with many pointing to it as an example of whitewashing.
Posting on Instagram, Dwayne Johnson took a chance to slam his new wax figure at the Grevin Museum, writing, “I knew my boy @jamesjeffersonj had this Rock wax statue in his roasting crosshairs…is this how y’all felt when you lost the Little Mermaid?”, referring to the somehow controversial casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Distorted wax figures seem to be the flavour of the season. Rapper Lil Wayne didn’t hold back his feelings about the wax version of himself. The 41-year-old rapper (whose real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) recently shared his thoughts on his wax replica in the Hollywood Wax Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, reports People magazine.
“Sorry wax museum but dat s*** ain’t me! You tried tho and I appreciate the effort,” he wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday.
As per People, Lil Wayne’s wax figure has been on display at the Hollywood Wax Museum since at least the summer of 2022, based on when a video of the statue was first posted on TikTok that has just now gone viral.
This comes after Dwayne Johnson revealed on Instagram that he recently contacted the Grevin Museum in Paris about changing the skin colour of his own wax figure.

The Rock’s got beef with a French museum.
In an Instagram post, Dwayne Johnson said his team would be in touch with Grévin Museum to request changes after its waxwork model of the actor was mercilessly mocked by the internet. The museum told Deadline that it would “remedy” the waxwork as soon as possible.
Johnson posted a video of comedian James Andre Jefferson Jr. roasting the statue. Jefferson said the Paris museum made The Rock look like a “pebble,” David Beckham, and a member of the UK royal family.
“Is this how y’all felt when you lost the Little Mermaid?” Jefferson joked.

Are the movies back? It’s an open question, one that is curiously thorny to unpack right now considering that much of Hollywood remains on pause. Yes, the WGA strike finally ended when studios at last agreed to fairly pay their writers and find common ground on their demands related to artificial intelligence. However, the SAG-AFTRA strike continues on in the background. Hence major studio tentpoles like Dune: Part Two leaving to find greener pastures.
Still, after what seemed like an anemic summer following the failures of old studio standby franchises via DC and Indiana Jones, and others that just massively underperformed Fast X, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One), folks were wondering if audiences were tired of the movies. Then the gift of Barbenheimer occurred. It turns out audiences were incredibly excited… to at least see Barbie and Oppenheimer. However, does this mean they’re excited to see much else?...

Lindsey Anderson Beer thinks the 'Bambi' remake needs to be more kid-friendly than the original. The 'Pet Semetary: Bloodlines' director - who has had to step back from the upcoming computer animated Disney reboot due to other commitments - has insisted so many families haven't shown their young children the original 1942 classic. She told Collider: “What’s interesting about Bambi to me is it absolutely is a classic and it’s a beautiful love poem, such artistry to it.I do think there’s an entire generation of children who have never seen the original and that’s very different from, say 'Little Mermaid' or 'Aladdin' or the ‘90s heyday films that they’ve definitely already seen."I can’t tell you how many kids I’ve seen who’ve never seen 'Bambi', which is such a shame.”While Anderson Beer...

If there's one thing to be said for the Disney Studios Showcase at Destination D23 this year, it's that it gave those of us on the weekend news shift a nice quiet start to Sunday.
First, to give some perspective, here's a quick recap of the headlines from last year's D23 Expo. The 2022 event featured the announcement of two new Pixar movies and Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Wish," the first footage from "Elemental," the first footage from the live-action "Little Mermaid" remake, Rachel Zegler presenting the first teaser for "Snow White," Jude Law presenting a first look at Disney's "Peter Pan & Wendy," and the entire original cast of "Enchanted" showing up to introduce the trailer for "Disenchanted." On the Marvel Studios front, the showcase included a first look at "The Marvels," footage from "Loki" season 2, a preview of "Werewolf By Night," and a teaser for "Secret Invasion," among other treats.

The hit live-action "The Little Mermaid" just hit Disney+ to stream on Sept. 6, and apart from the original movie's songs like "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Kiss the Girl," audiences everywhere have gotten to enjoy four new songs courtesy of the original animated movie's composer, Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
For the most part, the songs from the original movie sound the same in the 2023 remake, but Menken did give fans a heads-up that there would be some minor changes to the original lyrics to make the movie, which was initially released in 1989, feel more modern. "There are some lyric changes in 'Kiss the Girl' because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel]," Menken told Vanity Fair in March.
No one would blame you if you initially missed the tweaks Menken and Miranda made to "Kiss the Girl.

You've likely heard the story of "The Little Mermaid" many times before. It begins with a mermaid longing to explore the human world - a longing that intensifies when she falls in love with a prince. She then exchanges her voice with a sea witch for the opportunity to become human, and though the sea witch nearly ruins everything, ultimately, the mermaid gets her happily ever after. That story, which was most recently retold in Disney's live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid" starring Halle Bailey, is a classic, age-old fairy tale . . . or is it?
Actually, the "Little Mermaid" story most of us know and love is a rewrite of a much older, much bloodier fairy tale. In 1837, per ScreenRant, Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen penned the original "The Little Mermaid." It begins similarly to Disney's familiar version, starting out by focusing on a mermaid longing to be with a prince whom she can't reach.

The upcoming remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is just one of the many live-action adaptations Disney has made of their animated classics, but this one seems to be hitting a nerve.
While speaking with The Telegraph, David Hale Hand, son of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs supervising director David Dodd Hand, is very much opposed to the remake. “I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it,” Hand said. “There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.“

Disney’s live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid is hitting Disney+ on Sept. 6, after a very hearty 103 theatrical window.
The Little Mermaid debuted over the four-day Memorial Day weekend to $118.8M domestic. Worldwide it had a $164M start.
The pic, directed by Rob Marshall, grossed north of $564M worldwide, however, wasn’t the billion success of other Disney live-action takes of their animated pics, i.e. Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Little Mermaid faced headwinds at offshore markets due to the casting of Halle Bailey in the lead role; this despite rave reviews, Deadline’s Pete Hammond extolling that the actress “simply soars, a gorgeously conceived Disney princess who longs to become human just to check it out. Bailey’s vocals alone are the price of admission including making her signature ‘Part Of Your World’ thrilling to behold.”
The Little Mermaid fared better stateside than overseas, grossing $297M to $267M.
