"Dave Skylark's Very Special VMA Special" is as the title already says a television special and this one was made back in 2014 to promote the upcoming VMA Awards. The film has Oscar nominee James Franco and Emmy nominee Seth Rogen reprise their roles from the controversial 2014 film "The Interview", but it is really all about Franvo here as he has the best material playing the show host while Rogen's only routine is to stop his host from behind the camera every time he goes over the too much again. Which happens a lot. The guests include Jason Derulo, Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj. Derulo is in it the first five minutes and gets constantly provoked by the host (Franco) to say his name like some kind of jingle, which he keeps refusing. Until the crew annoys him as much. The next five minutes belong to Iggy Azalea and here the conflict is that Skylark constantly assumes she is Austrian and not Australian plus a pretty odd Beatles reference. And the rest of it is all about Nicki Minaj and her butt of course and she feels uncomfortable being constantly asked questions about it. I may not be a fan of the trio's music, especially Minaj's, but thumbs-up for them for agreeing to play themselves in this of course scripted little spoof. The Derulo part was okay at best, but everything afterward was hilarious. Sure it's not to easy to like the guys from Veep and even more so House of Lies, but in the face of Franco's brilliant performance it is tolerable I would say. So yes overall, this was definitely a positive surprise and it shows that quality writing can even make stuff work where I am not too fond of the cast members. It sure also helped that these trained musicians, not actors, basically did not have to do a lot except act outraged while Franco carried the entire thing on his shoulders. I highly recommend the watch here and you also don't need to have seen "The Interview" ton appreciate this one a lot. I haven't either and I'd certainly watch a sequel of this very special special here or even a television series. Highly recommended.
