Remember, no Russian
quincytheodore18 April 2015
After the perilous encounter with Wilson Fisk from last episode, the Russians are now excluded from the elite bad guys club. They might not be aware of, or even allow this development, but the volatile Russians are resorting to full blown violence nonetheless. This puts Daredevil and other bystanders in precarious position as Fisk also plays out his grand plan.

For majority of the episode, Murdock is chasing the lead to uncover Fisk's identity. He is gradually getting closer, although the bigger picture still eludes him. The rest of it is divided to two significantly different dates. Foggy and Page take on a case to help a lady who is facing eviction. An unfair large company wishes to buy her apartment and it has tried underhanded tactic to do so. It's quite nice to see them both exchanging banters as they try to resolve the situation, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll have an intriguing chemistry, more platonic than romantic.

The parts where they deal with more trivial matters make the show more grounded. Dialogues are light and simple, same cannot be said with Fisk who is still trying to woe Vanessa. Ayelet Zurer as the potential love interest of mafia kingpin seems sophisticated. There's a strange attraction between these two characters, it's more somber and heavier than usual attraction although they still have the luxury of making pleasantries.

Fisk has a few insidious tricks, the sort of using harsh means to achieve his ends. He is a controlled and intellectual individual despite sometimes seemingly too timid. It's fascinating to see many contradicting natures for a villain, Fisk might appear to be well-mannered but he's also terribly relentless.

Whether Daredevil, Russians or Fisk who achieve what they want from the night, it seems that the spark will linger.

A Fiery Episode
Season 1 Episode 5 | World On Fire This episode sheds light on three brewing relationships, whose formations seem to lay the path the series is currently heading to. There's Matt and Claire, which somehow if not entirely, displaces Karen Page off Matt's circle of potential love interests. And now we see Karen and Foggy, finally now seem to be getting along, hinting of a future pair (just a guess). The most intriguing of the pairs, though, is the one happening between Wilson Fisk and Vanessa. Vanessa appears to be as mysterious as Fisk, and thid early I could feel how big her role in Fisk's life's gonna be. The finale scene lives up to the episode's title. Overall, I can say it's fiery, a really good episode.

Vision of Fire

World on fire involved some action, more Fisk, progressing relationships, and one big arrest. The show started out with two great episodes and so in turn I think the last few have felt a bit underwhelming. Nevertheless I have confidence that it will pick itself up in the coming episodes. Especially with Murdock presumably arrested.

Let's not forget that Oliver Queen was arrested for being the Arrow in season 1 and he got out of it, of course different events have occurred in season 3, but I'm sure Matt can get out of this one. Considering he's a lawyer will definitely help. This show is also taking the approach of getting the people against our hero. He was framed once in this episode, and he was then seen by police beating the crap out of someone. Things aren't boding too well for the man without fear. Fisk is becoming more of a presence after his cruel entrance. I really like how nonchalant these criminals act in situations that are not normal at all. It gives us a sense at just how despicable Hell's Kitchen really is. Apparently the one thing with Fisk you don't mess with, is his love life. Vanessa, played by Ayelet Zurer, is the one person who seems to understand Fisk in a way no other person really does. Or at least she's becoming really fascinated with him. And 3 episodes in I have finally realized that Zurer also played Superman's birth mom in Man of Steel.

This week also saw Foggy and Karen go on a date. I still feel like we need more scenes of all of them together. Plus, I'm not a huge Foggy fan so the time spent with him seems wasted at this point. But I will say hearing Karen ask Foggy to touch her face with his eyes closed so that she realizes what a blind man feels, gives me the feeling of jealousy. I can definitely see Foggy and Matt's relationship going down that path very soon. But with Matt and Claire's relationship growing, I don't know if Matt will be interested at all in Karen.

+Relationships progressing

+Fisk's awkwardness

+Possible arrest

-Pace needs to be picked up

Just gets better...
hiren848414 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Each time I watch this show, it just keeps reminding me of Batman Begins...not just because it's dark or doesn't have people flying about everywhere but because it feels real. You can see the writers have invested a lot of time into this and it is working!

Best thing in the episode is Wilson Fisk. I mentioned previously that this is such a good character - you see the vulnerability and ruthlessness in one scene (his reasons also being very similar to Ra's Al Ghul from batman). I just get the feeling things won't end well with him and his girl but looking forward to him losing it again (like in previous episode).

One gripe I had was how quickly we're supposed to believe Claire is falling in love with Matt - I mean perhaps they have met quite a bit off screen that we didn't see but it didn't feel as natural. In fact the scenes between Foggy and Karen were more interesting and I'm keen to see where that goes.

A rather nice cliffhanger of an ending - can't see how Matt can get out of that one, but story is moving nicely.

"I've hurt people and I'm going to hurt more. It's impossible to avoid for what I'm trying to do. But I take no pleasure in it, in cruelty."

"I've hurt people and I'm going to hurt more. It's impossible to avoid for what I'm trying to do. But I take no pleasure in it, in cruelty."

Another compelling episode, Vladimir looks for revenge on Daredevil because of his belief that he was the one who brutally murdered his brother and Turk Barrett (Rob Morgan) has him believing that Daredevil is actually in cahoots with Fisk all along.

The episode is mostly themed on the character relationships though, Matt Murdock and Claire's relationship starts to fall apart because she can't handle the idea of him 'enjoying' hurting criminals, Karen and Foggy start to develop a close relationship with each other, but the most compelling one was that of Wilson Fisk and Vanessa. Every scene those two are in are intense because of issues of trust and lies.

What's interesting about this is their relationship is that Fisk actually opens up to Vanessa and admits to the type of person he truly is. In contrast to Murdock saying he inflicts pain on his enemies because he enjoys it, Fisk says that he takes NO pleasure in what he does. While it is clear that Fisk is a ruthless and a dangerous man, it really does blur the lines even further between good and evil. This is a cliché thats been done so often in comic book movies where it just throws the "Are the good guys really as bad as the villains" thing at you, but the way this series is written, it actually feels compelling.

Another very good episode that has me wanting more.

I'm just a man with a dream
jhudson-117044 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A big cliffhanger finished this episode as Fisk and Matt further their plans to deal with the Russians. This episode also featured some cool fight scenes, strong performances and bonding between characters.

First let's start with the Matt and Claire. After Claire's abduction, she is recuperating at Matt's apartment, where they share a tender moment in his apartment with him taking care of her wounds. Claire reveals her belief in his quest to save Hell's Kitchen and Matt reciprocates that trust by revealing his name. The chemistry between Cox and Dawson is really good and works very well in this show.

There is good chemistry and scenes with Foggy and Karen. I wasn't a fan of either because they just seemed like comic relief and a grounding mechanism for Matt. However, with a new case for the firm, it allows Karen and Foggy to bond when they go see opposing counsel and the client. It did seem, however, that this new case just seems like giving Karen and Foggy something to do while Matt takes on street crime and Fisk.

Fisk also has great scenes with Vanessa. It's really intriguing that Fisk is slowly winning Vanessa over to his side, especially with his plan in place. Fisk blows up the Russian headquarters and tells her about what the Russians have done. While it is true, he is leaving a lot of stuff out while still seeming awkward and uncomfortable.

There were some scenes that didn't shock me but I'm still happy were in the episode. I'm really not surprised that there are some cops on Fisk's payroll and I'm not surprised that two of them are the detectives we've seen. I wasn't shocked either by the possible romantic yet somehow platonic dinner between Foggy and Karen. These two work really well together but I'm glad that they aren't going to start in a relationship.

There's a really cool shot during a man in black fight scene. It's his takedown of the Russian cabbies and the blind Chinese guy. The camera, being in the middle of the cab, slowly rotates back and forth showing the front and back of the cab. It shows that the Russians leave the cab, Matt shows up then disappears and beats up the guys in incredible fashion.

Now for the cliffhanger, after Fisk's attack on the Russians, Matt, who was sort of in the area, gets caught after chasing after their leader, Vladimir. It looks like he's finally going to get somewhere with Vladimir in his grasp but the cops come and possibly catch him. The next episode is going to be great especially if it deals with the immediate aftermath of the explosions.

+ Matt/Claire; Foggy/Karen; Fisk/Vanessa + Action and cool cab camera work + Fisk's attack on the Russians + Compelling cliffhanger - Tully case seems like filler

Final Score: 8.8/10

Awesome

Warning: Spoilers
Another wonderful episode. I didn't remember that Murdock had a romance with Claire, I saw people shipping it here in the comments and I thought (I still think) it was very strange. Corrupt police, nothing new under the sun. Another thing I didn't remember was that Vladimir thought Kingpin was working together with Daredevil. Mrs. Cardeñas is a sweet person, I remembered that this episode was sad because she (and the building) was hit by the bomb. Obviously Fisk isn't telling Vanessa everything, but it's strange that she knows that he's done a lot of questionable things and that he's dangerous (her words) and still goes out with him. She is as cold as he is. Oh, I was about to forget to mention, what a wonderful scene that was with the guy singing in the car, then the camera turns and the henchmen enter the place, then it spins some more, then Daredevil appears standing still, spins more and Daredevil disappears and Then he appears punching the guys, wonderful sequence shots, worthy of Mike Flanagan, if Flanagan filmed action scenes they would all be like this. Episode five watched on March 7, 2024.

E5 is Delicious [8.3/10]
panagiotis199313 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Live Reaction / Review for Daredevil Season 1 Episode 5: Episode 5 here we go. Episodes 1+4 were good. Episodes 2+3 were delicious. I hope this one is better than all the previous episodes. And Matt officially has a girlfriend, one more person to protect and care about, things could get complicated. Wow, they made the Russian believe that Matt did this to his brother? That's nuts and things are about to get violent. The chinese lady talks in chinese but the rest of the criminals don't understand the language so I don't understand why she doesn't speak english with them so that they understand what's up, it's a bit confusing imo. Even the cops work for Fisk, damn. Im curious to see what kind of relationship Fisk and that woman will have. The Russian is going to war, nice but Fisk had other plans. It seems like Fisk found a psycho girlfriend, the perfect match. Will they arrest Matt? Insane cliffhanger! Great episode, my rating is 8.3/10.

Still decent

Warning: Spoilers
A decent episode again, not one of the best but it does the job. A bit too much of the light flirting between Foggy and Page which I could have done without. The action is brief but satisfactory and the development with the Russians works well.
