Raw Bowl!
callanvass18 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
(01.01.96)

Live from Newark, DE

Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Jerry Lawler

Wow. They're really pushing the "Raw Bowl" There is a collegiate atmosphere, cheerleaders are there, even bands are playing! All the football references are gonna become tiresome very quickly.

Raw Bowl

The Smoking Gunns Vs Razor Ramon & Savio Vega Vs Owen Hart & Yokozuna (W/Jim Cornette & Mr. Fuji) Vs Sycho Sid & The 123 Kid (W/Ted Dibiase)

Here are the rules for the match

One timeout per team can be used at any time Team is eliminated when a teammate is pinned, disqualified, counted out, or submits! Any player may be tagged in at any time! Once tagged, physical contact must be made with opponent before tagging out! During Razor's entrance with Savio Vega, Goldust's usher presents Razor with a gift. Razor absolutely snaps and beats up the usher in badass fashion.

I'll rundown the eliminations in order.

Razor Ramon & Savio Vega

Yokozuna & Owen Hart.

Sycho Sid & The 123 Kid.

Your winners: The Smoking Gunns.

This was really silly and went on longer than it should have. That being said, it was harmless fun at times. There was enough action throughout to keep you engaged, even if the football references got very annoying.

**1/2

We get a two-minute Raw Bowl half-time report with Dok Hendrix.

Hogpen Match

Hunter Hearst Helmsley Vs Henry Godwin

This is from In Your House V: Seasons Beatings. In order to win, you have to toss your opponent into a hog pen filled with pigs. Hillbilly Jim is the guest referee. Godwin goes to clothesline Hunter into the hog pen but Hunter ends up backdropping him straight into the hog pen to win the match. Hunter gets thrown in the hog pen anyway to a big pop. This was a relatively painless brawl that went better than I expected. Hunter was undefeated so the win made sense. At one point, Hunter gets a small gash on his back from being whipped into the gate for the hog pen.

*3/4

Diesel Vs King Mabel (W/Sir Mo)

Diesel wins in 8 seconds (!) with a boot to the face. Afterwards, Diesel delivers the jackknife powerbomb to Sir Mo. Mabel was on his way out of the WWF, hence the quick defeat. It served Diesel well to give him some momentum.

DUD

Steve Lombardi (The Brooklyn Brawler) tries to present The Smoking Gunns with the Steve Lombardi trophy. They respond by kicking Lombardi's ass.

We get a vignette of Vader. He'll be entering the 96 Royal Rumble.

It's time for Billionaire Ted's Wrasslin' Waroom! We get Scheme Gene, Nacho Man, and The Huckster. It's basically Vince making fun of how WCW's big stars are over the hill. WWF was still in the "New Generation" phase here.

The Raw Bowl is promoted heavily and obviously failed to live up to the hype. The whole show is basically featured around The Raw Bowl. At least we get a glimpse of what the Monday night wars would be like.

The show opens with the first (and last) Raw Bowl match. It's an elimination tag team match with Sid Vicious & the 1-2-3 Kid, the Smoking Gunns, Razor Ramon & Savio Vega and Yokozuna & Owen Hart. This is an awful match, with Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler throwing in every stupid football references that they can think of. Dok Hendrix gives the Half Time Report. Most of the Hog Pen Match from In Your House 5 is shown. The "main event" is Diesel squashing King Mabel. We see the presentation of the Steve Lombardi Trophy to the winners of the Raw Bowl. We see a Vader vignette. He had recently been fired by WCW and was about to debut in the WWF. The show ends with the first "Billionaire Ted's Wrasslin' Warroom" skit. This episode was an inauspicious beginning of 1996 for the WWF.
