As schedules go, they could not record together, so we’re having another double episode today, but this time with Origin director Ava DuVernay and the film’s star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
Origin is based on Isabel Wilkerson’s 2020 bestseller Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents and tracks the Pulitzer Prize winner’s creative and personal journey over several continents through grief, revelation and the evils of historical stratification. The film draws parallels between historical and modern-day oppression and persecution across the world. By weaving global threads of cruelty and dehumanization together, it underscores the timeless – and timely – dangers of extremist ideology and leaders who exploit prejudice.
King Richard Oscar nominee Ellis-Taylor plays Wilkerson, and she’ll also be featured in Netflix/Lee Daniels’ film The Deliverance opposite Andra Day and Glenn Close,...

Exclusive: As production on his new actioner Den of Thieves 2: Pantera continues, Christian Gudegast has been set to write and direct a new film on mixed martial artist Royce Gracie and the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for frequent partner Tucker Tooley Entertainment.
The Untitled Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Project takes place on the night that Gracie proved Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the most effective fighting style, one that would ultimately become a major component of today’s UFC mixed martial arts. It more specifically chronicles Gracie’s debut in UFC 1 on November 12, 1993, when the fighter achieved the unthinkable during the organization’s inaugural competition. This night that had him besting three competitors is considered to be that on which the UFC was born.

In her latest comedy special entitled “My Name is Mo’Nique,” which premiered on Netflix on April 4, Mo’Nique tearfully recounts a confession she made to her husband Sidney Hicks. In the special, she tells the story of admitting to Hicks for the first time that she wanted “to be with another woman sexually.”
The Academy Award winner, who’s been married to Hicks since 2006, reveals she had kept her desires a secret for most of her life out of fear, due to her family history. As she nears the end of her set in “My Name is Mo’Nique,” she spends a portion of the special remembering the relationship between her grandmother MiMi and a queer family member whom she affectionally refers to as “Uncle Tina,” reflecting on the distant relationship the two had due to Tina’s sexuality.

Actress Mo’Nique has opened up about an argument with Oprah Winfrey over a 2010 episode on her talk show that involved her estranged family members.
After her Oscar win that year, Winfrey told Mo’Nique that her brother wanted to be on the show to “let her know how parents can watch out for predators,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Mo’Nique’s brother had previously admitted to molesting her when she was seven and he was 13.
Mo’Nique said it was fine for her brother to make an appearance, but she was “horrified” to see her parents and another brother, who largely ignored the abuse, on the show.
Before the episode aired, she tried to get ahold of Winfrey to say that she wasn’t on speaking terms with her mother and that her family was only there for the money. She reached out to several people but could never get in contact with Winfrey.
