Good world-building and setup
barrettkwatson3 September 2019
This episode helped to create the world where this story takes place, the cities, continents, creatures, and political issues. More of that will hopefully unfold in the forthcoming episodes; however, this was a great setup to where and what is involved for this story.

A good start.

4 out of 5 stars.

Carnival Row begins with a bit of a mystery with its story telling. Introducing us to the 1800 world were man try to coexist with the faye and other human hybrid beasts. The plot focuses on a theme were people are prejudice towards other beast.

The plot follows Vignette (Cara Delevingne) who escapes from the soldiers that were attacking her homeland. And her ship wrecked in Burgue. She becomes a house maid while her former lover Rycroft (Orlando Bloom) who was presumed dead from her. Is still alive and is on a mystery murder case.

The script, direction, and story is engaging and exciting. It may be slow moving but it is an intriguing story.

I've Just Started and I'm Hooked
markkbranson9 September 2019
I own that I am a sucker for fantasy and/or sci-fi. I own that I'm a fan of Orlando Bloom. I own that I relished period pieces (even tho' this one is in a tome long ago and far away).

But the real reason why I'm hooked on "Carnival Row" is it's obvious political parallels to our sole today. This first episode makes this political/cultural connection explicit.

There are numerous parallels to American in a post-Trump world and Brexit England. Just for a few examples: xenophobia, a mindless war, mass immigration, prejudice, class conflict... the list goes on and on. But identifying these and relishing the commentary is the joy here!

Join me and watch this show and you will have a grand adventure and serious thoughts about our world today!

What a whirlwind of a show! it's honestly amazing. the character development, world building and storyline had me on the edge of my seat! a binge-worthy show to say the least. even the side stories were so interesting. and the cinematography was so beautiful, my eyes turned into heart emojis.

I don't understand why all the negative reviews . To be honest there is some bad things but there also some good things in this show we must give it a chance at least more 2-3 episodes. The only thing i didn't like is Cara's acting and the episode is a little bit dark but everything else was Okay.

Too dark, literally

Interesting beginning, but the chase scene is so dark that much of the time you just see a black screen.

Cara delevigne is surprising quite good. Interesting premise and holds a certain charm, definitely worth starting, can't wait to start bingeing.

Had trouble understanding most of it
kenhorowitz30 August 2019
Perhaps it was because of their accent, but I think it was more that the sound made it hard hard to understand. Also, it's always dark so it's hard to see . I also don't mind 4 letter words necessarily but each character has to use the same one over and over (f...). When the bad guy gives his little speech from which the title of this episode derives, I felt that it was quite a bit of overacting. Finally, I am still confused about what is happening. I will try another episode but as of right now - I can only give it 5 stars.

Enough with the F bombs

I'm no prude but come on. Wonderful actors, great production but why do writers stoop to such low levels in order to tell a story. And a confusing one at that. I'll keep watching for a few more episodes in hopes that the story line keeps my interest.

Great catchy begining
Badr90s11 September 2021
I'm a fan fiction but when you create a world with it's own creatures and rules a Utopia thats turning to a dystopia here you will have my full attention and unlike many tv shows the begining isn't slow or boring it's exciting and made me continue this without a stop til finish, not to mention the great unexpected performance by Cara and the expected one from himself Orlando bloom.

Mixed feelings
Leofwine_draca22 February 2022
I had no idea what I expect from this and I wasn't overly impressed. It seems a typical kind of adult fantasy drama with a good emphasis on world building and visuals but lacking when it comes to the main story. Cara's acting is quite awful and Orlando's not much better. At least we have better actors in support. Not much going on at this point but the SFX are a little distracting and the social allegory heavy handed.

There's More Going On Here Than You Can Fathom.....
wandernn1-81-68327416 August 2021
Okay this will be my 3rd time trying to start this show but this time I'm going to actually try to pay better atttention.

So we start off with a apparent history of WAR against the FAE, because Humans (Man) cannot of course abide any other creatures existing without dominating them. I'm not really a fan of the winged FAE creature concept but okay, I'll go with it for now.

Decent Effects and a small chase at the start, +1 Star.

So Legolas is some dude named Rycroft. He seems to be a human dedicated to protecting the FAE or something. Several events and scenes go down and towards the end, Portia who I guess is a main character, shows up nude in Legolas's bed. Big problem with this scene for me is she holds the sheet to hide herself even tho she's there to offer herself to Legolas for a birthday present. -2 STARS. Just don't do this kinda thing stupidly. You want to show someone naked show them naked.

Legolas is then ambushed while he's asleep by a FAE with a grudge. Let that be a lesson. When there are critters around that can fly, you better close up and lock your windows. Duh.

Okay and at the end the scene was so dark I couldn't even tell what was going on. It seemed like some FAE got offed at the end. 4/10.

Things that make you go hmmmmm
Mhump2321 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it funny that the bad guys rampage through the woods killing the fairy people and at the climax to the scene the fairy played by Cara Delaveen ups and flys off to the safety of the boat. That kinda did it for me. Made it through first episode but that's it for me.

Hope it got better...

Cuz Magic Made Him Do It!
natisomna9999929 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost wasnt the detective with his partner? How did the assailant get away out of the bar without the partner stopping him? The partner was literally 8ft away from the door while the assailant was 40ft and the bad guy somehow got out of the door. Theyre running up and jumping on roofs the bad guy is trying to get away but then at the end he decides to kill himself. Man! That makes no sense, why is he doing all of this just to kill himself in the end? How are they running on a lot of peoples old roofs and none of them break? Why is the chick in the bed talkin bout some, "you might have an concussion?" She aint got a education! What she knows about concussions??? She is sneaking around in the house where she works to sleep with him.. NOBODY heard the argument they were having and the door slamming? Question, this is the 17th century and everybody seems so modern. Theres apparent birth control, being a prostitute is alright; Vignette escaped from rape then offered to work in as a PROSTITUTE to get beat, choked, and run in by the very same men who killed her family???? Everybody is acting like tons of stuff in the show is acceptable back when, when it wasnt! It was blasphemy! The team really needs to hire me to find plotholes in the story because I found a shizz ton.
