In recent years, pop culture has made increasingly frequent reference to the ancient Peruvian drug ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic plant extract used in shamanic rituals. Perhaps the smartest and most satisfying to date is Icaros: A Vision, a collaboration between Leonor Caraballo and Matteo Norzi, which moves this week to general release after a year on the festival circuit. Using real life experience as a springboard for poetic fiction, the picture centers on an American woman seeking healing in the Amazon. But the odor of cultural appropriation that sometimes clings to projects like this is absent here, with the filmmakers both...

A suicidal American seeks solace in the Amazon in Raz Degan's The Last Shaman, a documentary concerning the hallucinogen of the moment, ayahuasca. Degan's first film, the effort often suffers from hazy storytelling, but its real difficulty for many viewers will be its protagonist, who isn't the most sympathetic proxy for Americans curious about the plant extract's suitability to treat depression. Though ayahuasca's current buzz ensures some measure of attention for the pic, it will be overshadowed in theaters by Leonor Caraballo and Matteo Norzi's much-superior Icaros: A Vision and on small screens by more journalistically rigorous accounts.

★★★★☆ On the heels of Embrace of the Serpent comes another tale of spiritual purification in the Amazon, but one told in a very different manner. Set in present-day Peru in the same town as Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, Icaros: A Vision begins as American traveller Angelina arrives at a shamanic retreat deep in the jungle. She joins an assortment of people all seeking cures for various ailments, be it drug addiction, a stammer, or in her own case what appears to be cancer. Each night the guests and shamans gather together and ingest the psychoactive plant mixture 'Ayahuasca' while singing mysterious chants known as 'Icaros'.

After this, both...
