It’s no secret that while these fair British Isles basically invented acting and movie-making, another country out there has a particular knack of making some tremendously emotional and jarringly real films and TV shows… Australia I am looking directly at you!
For years now I have championed some of the titles that come out of Australia (especially on the indie scene) the wealth of talent in front of and behind the camera is incredible. Look no further than TV shows like Underbelly or Wentworth; movies like Two Hands, Babadook, Chopper, Wolf Creek, Ned Kelly or Animal Kingdom to name a few.
Now I get to add West of Sunshine to my list of Aussie movies that more than deserve your attention.
I am a sucker for a movie...

Banijay, the European superindie that owns Keeping Up With The Kardashians producer Bunim/Murray, has found itself in the middle of its own dramatic reality series in recent months after emerging as one of the frontrunners to buy Big Brother and Black Mirror rival Endemol Shine.
Most companies would hide under the covers until a deal is either done or the gossip has subsided. However, Banijay, which has 61 production labels in 16 countries, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month and, as such, CEO Marco Bassetti is doing the rounds to blow out as many candles as possible.
“I can’t comment on something that there are so many speculations on,” the former Endemol Group President Bassetti inevitably told Deadline.
However, he does address the general need for scale in the international TV business and admits that it is looking at opportunities for consolidation. “We believe that we will be in...

Pop, the joint venture between CBS and Lionsgate, believes that British mystery drama Clique can be the next Pretty Little Liars or Gossip Girl as it searches for “modern grown ups” to help it become “The CW 2.0”.
Justin Rosenblatt, Executive Vice President of Original Programming and Development, at the network told Deadline that the psychological thriller, which was created by Skins’ Jess Brittain, was a “really fun ride” that he hopes will help the channel move to the next level.
The first season of Clique, which is produced by BBC Studios and Balloon Entertainment, will launch on Pop on November 7 at 10pm, while the second season, which Pop has come on board as a co-producer, will launch in line with British network BBC Three early next year.

The organisers of the Fractured Visions Film Festival have announced the line-up for their inaugural event. Says the organisers:

Children Of The Fall (Israel) – UK Premiere
Rachel Strode, a young immigrant with a dark past, arrives in Israel during the Fall of 1973 to volunteer in a Kibbutz and to convert to Judaism. Soon, she realises that the local Kibbutz members don’t take kindly to foreigners, and the evening of Yom Kippur (the most important holiday in the Jewish faith), brings a brutal threat to her and her fellow volunteers. Having your debut feature play at London’s Frightfest is a huge honour. So for Jenn Wexler’s debut, The Ranger to also play on the festival’s opening night is a very big deal…
The Ranger tells a tried and tested genre story. In very simple terms, a group of teens go to stay in a cabin in the woods. There’s no evil spirits, no zombies, no ghosts, no aliens, just – as the title would suggest – one park ranger. But he is nasty enough to cause plenty of problems for the group. Jeremy Holm plays The Ranger, he looks nasty, angry and continuously like he wants to start a fight. And although I wouldn’t say I felt any sympathy for him,...

While some TV networks are papering over the realities of their businesses by trumpeting a range of digital deals, Pop, the CBS-Lionsgate joint venture, is sticking to its linear knitting.

The news is timed with the upfronts, but instead of a formal presentation, the network has meetings with ad buyers and press in smaller, more individualized settings.
The programming news is part of a ramped-up strategy with a new target of 400 original hours a year.

It is often joked that in Australia everything wants to kill you, but while the vast majority are probably referring to the famously dangerous wildlife world cineastes are likely to be just as cautious of the people who live there. From Animal Kingdom to Wolf Creek, Snowtown to The Loved One, it seems as though you can’t trust your neighbours down under after all. Tasmanian writer-director Damien Power isn’t likely to change that with his debut feature, a blisteringly brutal horror thriller that will have you crossing out another Australian beauty spot and leaving your camping equipment behind.

Writer/director Damien Power’s Killing Ground may tread some seemingly familiar territory in terms of its overall approach to survival horror—a young couple dealing with deadly backcountry predators on their idyllic getaway is certainly something fans have seen before. But make no mistake, what seems like a pretty standard set-up in Killing Ground evolves viciously into an unexpected game of cat and mouse, and Powers does a brilliant job of both embracing and deconstructing the genre tropes at play in his horrifically savage thriller.
At the start of Killing Ground, we meet young couple Ian (Ian Meadows) and Sam (Harriet Dyer), who are heading out to an Australian campground in the bushland to celebrate their New Year’s holiday and find some time for a little romance. When they arrive, they notice another campsite in the area, but decide to go on about their business, independently celebrating the arrival of a new year.
