Todd investigates "In The Garden of Eden" by I. Ron Butterfly...

... and Todd does get that obligatory Simpsons reference out of the way early.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida only reached 30 on the top 40 pop charts, so technically speaking, it isn't even that important as many one hit wonders. But the version that charted is not the real version. That one is 17 minutes long, has long drum solos, organ solos, and middle eastern sounding interludes. In fact it is longer than Todd's segment on the song.

The band - consistently just one member with everybody else rotating out at intervals shorter than this song - was high when they recorded it. Todd gives it attention because it is emblematic of the kind of music that was popular at the time.

Todd then plays a segment of the show "Playboy After Dark" that featured the band and shows people dancing to the song. Todd says that as far as he is concerned, this is the 60s. I love it when somebody born in 1983 tells me what the 60s were about. I'd say the late 60s were like this, but the early 60s - not so much.

The story of Iron Butterfly is probably a cautionary tale on the impact heavy drug use, no cohesive relationship between bandmembers, and a predatory record company can have on a band's chances at longevity coupled with the unique music landscape of the late 60s. I'd recommend this segment to the curious music historian.
