Decent Making Of

In the Shadow of the Vampire (2001)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Decent, if pretty incomplete, look at the making of Neil Jordan's INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. Jordan, author Ann Rice, make up wizard Stan Winston and actors Antonio Banderas and Kirsten Dunst are here to discuss the making of the film with archival interviews with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt thrown in.

Rice pretty much discusses how wonderful the film is and how happy she was with the results. Jordan talks about why he wanted to do the picture and what he wanted to bring to it. Both Dunst and Banderas talk about their characters and what was going on on the set. Some of the most interesting stories come from Winston who discusses the use of practical effects and mixing them with CGI ones. Dunst also has some interesting comments on what this film did for her career.

Overall, this is a decent "making of" featurette but I wish more subjects had been discussed and of course it would have been nice having updated interviews with Cruise, Pitt and other cast members. The death of River Phoenix is never discussed and none of the controversy with Rice's comments on Cruise before the film's released are mentioned. I think there's a lot more going on with this film and not much of it is discussed.
