Nice costumes.

I feel that Mercy Street has nice costuming. I see dark blue jackets on the Union officers, but since they are the occupiers I don't notice any Confederate light gray officer uniforms. Mary starts off dressed well, she being recent widow of European aristocrat. The hotel owner's daughter wears a nice hoop-skirted gown, with lovely design details. The physicians wear nice clothes, their sleeves rolled up to perform surgical operations. The hospital older woman barking orders has a rough-hewn outfit of what passes for clothing, she of the bossy exterior yet down-inside more humane personality.

The old standby crotchety nurse giving Mary the old-what-for dresses with starched stiff bearing, which matches her rigid personality. She seems very jealous of Mary, Mary of the "Miss Dix" training -- and old cranky whosit who is BBF with that famous Florence Nightingale. Mary soon trades her wealthy-looking traveling clothes and hat into more relaxed hospital garb. The nasty nurse is still rude and jealous.

I have studied the homefront and domestic side of the American Civil War, not just the fighting and killing, in my American History degree. This hospital, however, swallows up the wounded soldiers in order for the physicians and nurses to try and treat their injuries to good outcomes. So, the actual fighting and killing create work to do for the employees and volunteers of this hospital.
