Dr. Foster has a wife. Who knew? She doesn't look very friendly. No wonder he gets a new friend: drug addiction. Lo and behold! Little wifey takes her cold self and moves Way Out West. Foster needs a drink, not just the drug addiction. Now he can fall prey to assorted females on the show, maybe even Nurse Mary.
Foster is a civilian physician, possibly contracted to be a surgeon for the Union Army occupiers of the hotel/hospital. The army officers want him to join their little club, so he gets a navy blue uniform. He is proud. This segment is called "The Uniform". Get it?
Meanwhile, Ol' Mama visits him, she of the big mouth and whiny attitude. She brings in Foster's bro, Ezra, a Confederate soldier. Land sakes!! Ezra has a shot-up laig, and dear ol' mama can't have Foster amputatin' no laig. Foster figures it may save Ez's life, and mama can take a hike. Ez sez to take it off. Foster does so. Never listen to yo' mama.
Meanwhile, a new villain comes along. A fake dentist comes into the hospital, pretending that he is the expert on taking out teeth. He actually does some of this, but later he hits a Yankee over the head.
Spying and faking, oh, the deliciousness of this show. The plot thickens every week.
Oh yes, kudos to characters (Aurelia and Samuel?) for trying to help an enslaved young man escape into the outside world.
