Helena Bonham Carter is set to play one of the U.K.’s forgotten soap stars in a new limited series from “Years and Years” and “It’s a Sin” writer Russell T. Davies and producer Nicola Shindler.
“Nolly,” commissioned by commercial broadcaster ITV, looks at the reign and fall from grace of TV legend Noele Gordon, who was a mainstay on long-running ITV soap opera “Crossroads” for 18 years until she was unceremoniously fired.
“What’s extraordinary is that this woman was at the absolute peak of the powers — and this was the biggest show in the country — and she was fired without any kind of explanation, and without any kind of right to respond,” Shindler told Variety.
“In a post-#MeToo world, it’s fantastic to look at the theories and to examine what she [went through] at the time, and the way that she was treated, and how that was acceptable,...

As the demand for premium TV drama amps up the competition for top talent, independent producers have been battling with deep-pocketed global groups for access to the best actors, writers and directors. But it is often the strength of the creative relationships that matters more than commercial affiliations.
One example is Fable Pictures’ “Saint Mazie,” which creative directors Faye Ward and Hannah Farrell are developing alongside Helena Bonham Carter. Ward got to know the actress, who will star in and be a producer on the limited series, on the films “Toast” and “Suffragette” while Ward was at Ruby Films. Fable is working with two other actors in a similar vein, developing characters they’d like to portray and stories they’d love to tell.
“To have such passion entrenched in a story or a character from early on is hugely beneficial,” Farrell says.

Heavy lies “The Crown,” whose recently released second season garnered nearly as much acclaim as the first. The regal series may soon have some help shouldering that burden from Helena Bonham Carter, as the Evening Standard says the actress is “all but confirmed” to play Princess Margaret in the Netflix drama’s third season.
