These days, Peter Jackson is best known for directing big budget spectacles. He took the Hobbits to Mordor, he cast Benedict Cumberbatch as a dragon, he brought us the sight of a motion-capture King Kong smacking around a bunch of dinosaurs. But when he was just getting his career started, he was making very different kinds of movies: horror comedies that were drenched in blood and pretty much every other bodily fluid you can think of. In 1992, he brought the world what may be the bloodiest film ever made: a zombie comedy he would call Braindead, but many fans know it as Dead Alive. And if you haven’t seen this one yet (you can watch it Here), it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Peter Jackson never had any formal film school training, and not just because they didn’t have such courses in his home country of New Zealand.

Looking back on the horror genre throughout time, there’s always been a period where certain sub-genres have been most prominent. The 70s and 80s were all about the slasher flicks, with masked villains marauding around sleepy suburbs or high school kids having their heads chopped off, while remakes such as House of Wax and Ring dominated the early noughties. There’s another sub-genre, however, that had its roots in splatter films such as Peter Jackson’s superbly gross Bad Taste and Braindead, plus ‘video nasties’ like 1978’s I Spit on Your Grave. That’s right folk, we’re talking about ‘Torture Porn’, an exploitation horror subgenre known for its nasty, gory, and violent films. Do a quick Google search for the sub-genre, preferably with safe-search activated if you’re at work or Uni, just in case, and you’ll more than likely find several Top 10 lists of the best...

Horror has long been a jumping-off point for big studio directors. Sam Raimi made the "Evil Dead" films before he got "Spider-Man." Peter Jackson made one of the bloodiest films ever filmed with "Braindead" (aka "Dead Alive" for us Americans) and then did "The Lord of the Rings." This is a trend that continues to this day. James Gunn is one of the most powerful directors and producers in the business right now and he got his start with Troma!
Then we have James Wan, who transformed the horror cycle twice in the last 20 years. First with "Saw" in 2004, which kicked off a short-lived, but prolific movement of "torture porn" horror, and then with "Insidious" and "The Conjuring" in 2010 and 2013, respectively. We're still living in the ripples of those two movies which have spawned franchises in their own right as well as pulled supernatural horror back into the mainstream.

Talk to Me has garnered nearly unanimous praise since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, even going on to win big at the Fantasia International Film Festival just this week. Now, Talk to Me has earned some major backing from yet another Oscar winner, with New Zealand native praising the Australian horror film.
Speaking with Ahi Films (via Newshub) – a distributor of the film – Peter Jackson said that Talk to Me is “relentlessly scary and disturbing – in the best possible way”, adding that it “isn’t just good – it’s very very good. The best, most intense, horror movie I’ve enjoyed in years.” That’s some high praise for a guy that started off his career with two of the most relentless horror movies of their era, Bad Taste and Braindead (aka Dead Alive). Sure, many film fans might know Peter Jackson best from his time directing numerous ‘Lord of the Rings’ films. But if you’re a fan of his earlier work (such as “Braindead” and “Bad Taste“), you know Jackson got his start in the horror genre and knows a thing or two about creative scares. So, when the filmmaker is outspoken about a new horror film, fans should heed his words.

Ash have shared a brand-new single from their forthcoming album Race The Night. ‘Like A God’ is the follow-up to last month’s lead single and album title-track ‘Race The Night’, which heralded anticipation for a record that promises to be super-charged, widescreen and with melodies to spare. It won instant support across BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2 and Absolute Radio, bringing with it what lead singer and guitarist Tim Wheeler described as “the sound of the band revelling in the sheer joy of being a band after being separated by time and distance through the insanity of the early 2020s.”
‘Like A God’ comes on fast as muscular riffing beats a path to its wild and raucous end. Wheeler comments: “Like A God pushes the rock aspect of the album to its furtherest limits. An ode to sexual apotheosis it revels in a carnal riff played with mantra like...

While watching TV late one night, Peter O’Neill (Leonard Hoge) notices a curious sight from his bedroom window. A green light outside alerts him to strange occurrences in the house next-door, owned by the strictly religious Johnson family. What Peter witnesses leaves him scared, and his attempts to inform his family are met with disbelief.
Writer/director Erik Skybak then takes viewers into the Johnsons’ house, as they invite fellow churchgoer Herma (Sam Bangs) to housesit while they are on vacation. Later while she is alone, the guest ventures into the cellar where she discovers mysterious items, including a ring she tries on. The jewellery has a nasty effect on Herma, as a possession transforms her body and deteriorates her mind, threatening the guest and her unborn baby.

The new ten-episode Disney+ series"The Muppets Mayhem" sees the return of the psychedelic Muppet band The Electric Mayhem as they embark on a rip-roaring adventure to record their debut album. Their fearless bandleader Dr. Teeth is still behind the keys and Animal is still beating his drum kit into submission, with all the rest of the band getting back together to make magic happen once again. The long history of Muppets movies has always been filled with pop culture references and glorified celebrity cameos, but aside from "Muppets Haunted Mansion," they've largely avoided any direct nods to the horror genre.
That all changed with the seventh episode of the series "Track 7: Eight Days a Week," where an uncredited appearance from director Peter Jackson confirmed one of the most unlikely puppet crossovers in film history. For the sake of your own sanity and to keep wholesome childhood memories intact,...

All ten episodes of “The Muppets Mayhem“ dropped on Disney+ earlier this week, sending beloved Muppet band, The Electric Mayhem, on a musical journey to record their first album. In true Muppet style, the journey comes with a slew of notable cameos, including a shocking horror crossover we never would’ve anticipated in a million years.
A surprising uncredited cameo by director Peter Jackson confirms that the characters from his raunchy spluppet feature (splatter + puppet), Meet the Feebles, exist within the same world as the Muppets, making for one of horror’s most surprising crossovers.
“Track 7: Eight Days a Week” is the seventh episode of the season, which sees the Muppets’ music exec Nora (Lilly Singh) attempt to create a documentary about the band. Enter director Peter Jackson, playing himself. The Award-winning director is there with a crew, and the band recognizes him instantly.

A new creature feature from New Zealand filmmaker Scott Walker (The Frozen Ground), The Tank is coming to select theaters April 21, followed by Digital on April 25.
Set in the 1970s, The Tank is about a young family who unwittingly awakens creatures at their recently inherited coastal property. Academy Award-winning special effects supervisor and creative director Richard Taylor (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Krampus, Braindead) and his team at SFX studio Wētā Workshop are behind the film’s practical creature effects.
Ahead of the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Walker and Taylor about bringing these creatures to life.
Walker explains where his throwback creature feature began, “It was during Covid when I wrote this, and I wanted it set in 1978 as a nod to a simpler time. That was about a year into Covid, and nobody knew what was going to happen. We had been displaced around the world,...

There are a ton of bloody films out there, some of them more fun than others. Many of them were clearly made for gore hounds, and some come from pretty surprising places. Of course, the goriest films ever made change all the time as new movies keep aiming at beating that record, so every year, this could be a whole new list. These are a few of our favorite films with the highest amount of fake blood used during production:
Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992)
This horror comedy from Peter Jackson is a longtime favorite for many horror fans for the sheer amount of blood and gore seen throughout the film. The ear falling into a bowl of soup may be the grossest scene in the film, it’s definitely not the bloodiest by far. A very strange and welcome thing has happened this TV season: The broadcast networks are trying again.
You remember the broadcast networks, don’t you? They were mighty beasts that once dominated the earth, with impressive names like National Broadcasting Company or Columbia Broadcasting System (NBC or CBS to their friends). For more than 50 years, they were television, for all intents and purposes, representing everything good, bad, and in-between about the medium. More often than not, they opted for programming that would offend and/or confuse the fewest number of potential viewers.

Everyone remembers when New Zealand’s Peter Jackson came barreling onto the scene and in quick order brought us Bad Taste (1987), Meet the Feebles (1989), and Braindead (1992) before eventually settling down into Academy Award-winning fantasy films. (I forget their names. Just Google them.) But he wasn’t the first to introduce the world to his country’s nascent splattery talent: that honor goes to Death Warmed Up (1984), a loopy mash-up of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Hills Have Eye, Mad Max, and Looney Tunes, all spit-shined to grimy perfection in a great new Blu-ray from Severin Films.
Remastered by director David Blyth (Red Blooded American Girl) from the only existing materials, this new disc of Death Warmed Up has a ton of gooey goodies that we’ll get to, but first let’s tackle the story:

If you've been analyzing True Detective season three frame by frame like we have, chances are you've noticed a familiar face. No, we're not referring to Oscar winner Mahershala Ali. We're actually talking about one of our favorite breakout stars, Brandon Flynn.
Our beloved reformed bad boy from 13 Reasons Why has been popping up in the third season of the crime show, and we think there's a possibility he might be around for a few more episodes. Flynn plays Ryan Peters, a teenage boy who hangs with a troublesome crowd. On the day Julie and Will Purcell go missing, witness testimony reveals Peters and his two friends crossed paths with the two children. Following the children's disappearance, Peters is brought in for questioning, and he is interrogated about his Black Sabbath T-shirt (to determine his interest in the occult). CBS has given out one of its first pilot orders of the season to a drama that hails from Robert and Michelle King.
Titled “Evil,” it is described as a series about the battle between science and religion. The show focuses on a skeptical female clinical psychologist who joins a priest-in-training and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there’s a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work.
The Kings will serve as writers and executive producer on the pilot, with Liz Glotzer of King Size Productions also executive producing. CBS Television Studios, where the Kings are set up under an overall deal, will produce.
The pilot order continues the Kings’ long and lucrative relationship with CBS. The husband and wife team previously created the critically-acclaimed drama “The Good Wife” for CBS, which ran for seven seasons and over 150 episodes.

Before Peter Jackson directed The Lord of the Rings trilogy he made some crazy awesome, low-budget gross out horror films. He spent a lot of the early years of his career bathing in fake blood. Well, the filmmaker would love to go back to his roots and make another horror film filled with blood and gore, if the right project came along.
While recently talking with THR, Jackson had this to say:
"I'm very happy to be disgusting again if the right project comes along. It would be interesting to see how disgusting [collaborator] Fran [Walsh] and I could be in our older age compared to our younger years because we've learned a few things since then. We know a little bit more about the world than we did then, so maybe our levels of disgusting could go into whole new places!"
I would love to see Jackson make another horror movie!

Director Christian Rivers and screenwriter Philippa Boyens explore how they got Mortal Engines onto the screen.
Director Christian Rivers wrote a letter to Peter Jackson more than 26 years ago, asking if he could come and work for him. To Rivers’ surprise, he found himself storyboarding Jackson’s third feature film, Braindead (1992) and has worked on every one of Jackson’s film since as either a storyboard artist, visual effects supervisor, special effects technician or second unit director.
Now Rivers makes his feature directorial debut with Mortal Engines, based on the first of four novels by Philip Reeve in which massive cities on wheels rumble through a blasted apocalyptic landscape of the far future, swallowing up smaller burgs whole as a means of survival. As Rivers tells us below, he was both prepared and yet unprepared for the massive job of bringing this unique world to life --...

Robert and Michelle King are staying at their long-time studio home, CBS TV Studios. The duo, who have two series on the air, The Good Fight on CBS All Access and the upcoming Your Honor on Showtime, have re-upped their overall deal for three more years.
Under the new pact, the Kings have set up drama two projects — both written by them — Evil at CBS and Girls with Guns at CBS All Access.
Evil is a series about the battle between science and religion. It focuses on a skeptical female clinical psychologist who joins a priest-in-training and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possession, and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there’s a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work.

Representation and inclusion on TV appear to be on the steady uptick, but a closer look shows that progress is a minuscule move of the needle. We are seeing more black, Latino and Asian representation, but as we look deeper into specific portrayals within these ethnicities and races we have seen a stagnant pool of stereotypes — especially with regard to Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) actors.
According to a new study presented by Mena Arts Advocacy Coalition (Maac) titled “Terrorists and Tyrants: Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) Actors in Prime Time and Streaming Television”, there is a major gap in representation when it comes to Mena actors. When Mena actors are on TV they largely portray — you guessed it — terrorists and tyrants, stereotypical roles that have existed since the dawn of Hollywood.

Peter Jackson will always be associated with Middle Earth as the director behind “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movie trilogies, but the filmmaker isn’t booking a return trip to the world for Amazon’s television series. Rumors circulated in April that Jackson was going to be involved in some capacity on “The Lord of the Rings” show, with some reports claiming he would be a producer after his lawyer, Peter Nelson, mentioned that he “recently helped start a dialogue” between Amazon and Jackson. The rumors were just rumors, however, as Jackson confirmed he’s not involved in the series.
“I’m not involved at all in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ series,” Jackson said during an interview with French outlet Allocine. “I understand how my name could come up, but there is nothing happening with me on this project.”

If you're as obsessed with 13 Reasons Why as we are, you've probably already binge-Googled the entire cast. By now you've likely learned that breakout star Katherine Langford is Australian (you can totally hear her accent at times), the guy who plays Jeff is a regular on another Netflix show, and the girl who plays Clay's girlfriend, Skye, is Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's daughter. We've also learned that unlike Dylan Minnette, Brandon Flynn (aka Justin Foley) is a relative newcomer to Hollywood.
Literally the only reason he would look familiar to you - unless you've seen all those adorable photos of him and real-life boyfriend Sam Smith - is if you watched the short-lived CBS zombie comedy BrainDead. He appeared on the seventh episode, "The Power of Euphemism: How Torture Became a Matter of Debate in American Politics" as an intern:

In addition to his work on the feature film side, Ridley Scott has spent the better part of the last few years helping shepherd some of the most daring shows on TV. Most recently serving as the executive producer of the AMC series “The Terror,” Scott has also had a hand in “Taboo,” “The Man in the High Castle,” the unfairly short-lived CBS dark political comedy “BrainDead,” and the upcoming CBS All Access drama “Strange Angel.”
Having a hand in these various projects, Scott’s not ruling out a return to the place that gave his career a start. After cutting his teeth in live TV in the late 1960s, Scott didn’t go back to TV until filming a pilot for Showtime’s “The Vatican” back in 2013. That didn’t go to series, but it hasn’t discouraged him from coming back and trying again with the right project.

On Monday, Fox unveiled the network's primetime slate for the 2018-2019 television season during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre.
"This year, we launched four of the Top 10 new shows on broadcast, which led to a very strong roster of young series returning for their sophomore seasons. That gives us tremendous momentum heading into the fall," said Newman and Walden. "With our increased investment in football, we're going to use the powerful platform of the NFL to launch our new comedies. We'll then take some big swings with dramas at midseason, which is a proven strategy for Fox."
The new comedies joining the lineup this fall are Rel and The Cool Kids. Inspired by the life of Lil Rel Howery, Rel is a multi-camera comedy starring Howery as a loving husband and father living in Chicago, who finds out his wife is having an affair, and must rebuild...

When one door closes, another one opens. That's in the case in life and in TV. When one show gets cancelled a new show gets greenlit. Here are the shows Fox hopes you get excited for.
First show up is a comedy called Rel. Inspired by the life of Lil Rel Howery, Rel is a multi-camera comedy starring Howery as a loving husband and father living in Chicago, who finds out his wife is having an affair, and must rebuild his life as a single father, following his divorce. The comedy also stars Sinbad, Jess “Hilarious” Moore (“Wild ’N Out”) and Jordan L. Jones.

Aaron Tveit, a Broadway veteran perhaps best known for playing Danny Zuko in Fox’s “Grease: Live,” next tackles another iconic musical role: Ewan McGregor’s lovesick writer Christian in a Broadway-bound stage adaptation of “Moulin Rouge!”
And come what may, it looks like he’s nailing it.
The actor belts out the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie’s ballad “Come What May” in a new music video released Thursday in advance of the stage adaptations’s premiere next month at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre.

The stage version, expected to transfer to New York sometime next season, also stars Tony winner Karen Olivo (“In the Heights”), Danny Burstein (“Fiddler on the Roof”), Sahr Naugjah (“Fela”), Ricky Rojas (“Burn the Floor”) and Robyn Hurder (“Nice Work if You Can Get It”).
Directed by Alex Timbers with a book by Tony winner John Logan (“Red”), the show will be choreographed by Sonya Tayeh. The Boston run is booked for a limited engagement, from June 27 through Aug. 5.
But it’s unlikely how much flying paper, roses, snow and fog will remain in the stage production.

The stage musical will include many of the film’s songs, as well as more recent hits. The 2001 movie premiered at Cannes in 2001 before going on to become a big-screen hit.
The film earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two, for art direction and costume design.

When you think of the Guinea Pig series you think lo-fi, low budget exploitation shockers that push the boundaries of taste and decency, packed with gore and not much story. Which is essentially what Stephen Biro and co. brought to American audiences with the first film in the American Guinea Pig series… What you don’t think of with this particular franchise is a well-presented, well-constructed, well though-out horror that is packed with gore yet still gives the likes of Blumhouse a run for their money in terms of production values and storytelling.

Jan Maxwell, a beloved mainstay of New York City theater, died on Feb. 11 at the age of 61. Over the course of her illustrious career, in which she appeared in 13 Broadway and numerous Off-Broadway productions, Maxwell earned five Tony Award nominations for her work in both musicals and plays, comedies and dramas, displaying a near-unparalleled mastery of both genres.

Is it possible for an actor to win two Emmys for one TV show?
In Season 3 of FX’s Fargo — premiering Wednesday, April 19 at 10/9c — Ewan McGregor is attempting maybe the most difficult acting feat of his career: playing the dual lead roles of feuding Minnesota brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy.
