Ignore the low rating & poor reviews
karenwalsh-2824112 July 2020
This is an excellent drama, heartbreaking, intense & beautifully acted by the whole cast. I'd no idea how it could only have a rating of 7 till I realised those who have no sympathy for the plight of refugees had been maliciously low-scoring it. Ignore them & watch this for it tells a story we should all be witness to.

Well done to all involved.

To all saying it is inaccurate...
vickiekay19 July 2020
How do all of you know it is inaccurate? I found it Interesting. At least I am capable of admitting that I have no clue whether or not it is accurate. I enjoyed the acting and know that it is quite possible that many of these 'camps' have guards that mistreat people. But that's beside the point. Since when does a series have to be factual?

Australian film industry continually improving
Vindelander14 August 2020
An excellent film, particularly as it's based on truth. Individual story lines of the characters are well developed and the acting throughout is captivating. Heartbreaking but important to bring to attention and one hopes that the Australian Immigration Service is pulling its socks up as a result- although there's scant evidence of this.

Films like this can only be good as catalysts for action. Well worth watching.

Powerful and Important
brendosdeluca17 July 2020
Incredible performances and heart breaking story. As an Australian living overseas this is so important for the world to see how Australia treats its refugees. People do not know how lucky they are just to be born in a certain country and have so many comforts that are so easy when compared to those in third World war stricken countries. We take it for granted. Stays with you long after watching!

An Excellent Human Piece
sanclan15 July 2020
I can't believe any of the negative reviews, I feel they must have watched only one or two episodes. You must watch this complete series. It is a human story. About naturals to Australia, refugees, detainment workers and their families, case workers, protesters, cults, psychiatrics issues, etc.

It did not sway me to think anything different about legal vs. non-legal. But, as I said it is about humans in general and their strife. I highly recommend it.

Very good
alankeane23 July 2020
I don't really care if it's 100% factual or not. It even said it's just inspired by true events.

The acting is good, the story is good, all the characters are interesting and I enjoyed it a lot.

Mandatory watching

Difficult to watch at times, but nothing like the pain experienced at these facilities. Shame on us, as humanity to treat one another so.

Sometimes doing your job isn't the right thing to do !!
madhukar3028 June 2021
Stateless, is loosely based on a collection of immigration horror stories that happened over a course of time, put together cleverly. The Barton detention facility shown is the web series is based on the real life detention centre called Woomera, South Australia. The series presents the plight of the poor immigrants, both pre and post detention, the series also focuses the life of the guards of the detention centre, The general red tape surrounding the immigration system and the tireless volunteers opposing the detention system. The human stories of some immigrants, though not in great detail, touches our hearts.

Cinematography is neat, the various emotions portrayed by the actors are well captured. Though Screenplay is pretty raw in the early episodes, it matures a lot as the series progresses and peaks in the last two episodes, with some wonderfully writing. Editing is mostly good and one cannot complain much about a 316 minute runtime. The creators and the directors have handled the project pretty well to have a great outlook. Production design, music, costumes and makeup were decent. On the acting front, Stateless boasts many well know names from Australian movie scene. Asher Keddie's performance was the best of the lot followed by Jai Courtney and Yvonne Strahovski.

Overall, if you like emotional dramas and human stories, Stateless is just tailor made just for you. It also will also give the viewer a small case study on immigration and detention system that government down under followed in the early 2000s. The creators of Stateless have balanced the series in such a way that the focus remains on the plight of the immigrants even though they take a pot shot at the immigration system. Highly recommended, Stateless is emotionally gripping and shows the huge gap between bureaucracy and humanity a solid 7.1 stars out of 10. Watch out for a killer episode six.

Once again, the importance of representation seems so vital and so moving. A closer look of what being stateless does to a person. Painful, but oh so important.

It's a struggle
cordenw22 July 2020
I'll carry on watching even though it's not a stellar show.

So many of these refugee movies / series have me angry at a world where murderous leaders and their willing followers just use the cruellest methods to get rid of their opposition. To get rid of people with a different faith or to get rid of people who are a different color . They shoot them in the head, they decapitate them, mow them down with machine guns ... men women and children ... and then go smoke their pipes of peace as if they'd just washed their car.

I also get angry because the burden is, without exception, placed on the Western world (and this includes Australia) to take the refugees in and take on the responsibility for feeding , clothing and housing them.

You never hear of them fleeing to Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan, ..... majority Muslim countries. You never hear of them lining up to get into Indonesia or China or Japan and especially not Russia.......... and these are very wealthy countries!

Strangely they all want to get to countries that have a generous welfare system and even more strangely they want the accommodating countries to change their laws to favour their old belief systems. Tell me what's wrong with this picture?

In a world where we have an organisation known as "The United Nations", where do we see any effective plan or lobbying to create a safe place for these dislocated individuals and families?

Truth is that the United Nations was born dead by design and is absolutely useless.

There's vast, virtually unoccupied islands and lands where new countries could be created but no... they have to be plugged into the Western social security system.

If they took the money they spend on all of this integration, border patrols, ESL, cultural awareness, weaponry and war and set it aside for the formation of a new Eden, there'd be more than enough to create a self sufficient society. But ... that ain't gonna happen and we just have to accept that state murder is a condition of mankind.

And so we turn to the series.

You have to feel sorry for the recipient countries because they have to show compassion. They don't know from one day to the next what sort of refugee they are dealing with and the entire world is waiting for them to do something that infuriates the wokes of this world (as an aside, maybe we can recruit the wokes to set up the new country and see how long their principles hold up)

The acting is very much OZ , real, blunt and uncompromising.... but the series itself does show that their legal systems are pretty good and that their commitment to their international obligations is pretty strong, despite the onerous costs of dealing with floods of people from any trouble spot.

Not really sure whether the Sophie ( Yvonne Strahovski) sub-plot does anything for the story, but as I said, I'll keep watching it just to see what develops. She sure hasn't done anything but mess it up so far and is an annoying character.

As with most of these political type dramas, there is always subtle messaging; the dominant female bosses, the inadequate male underlings and the stereotypical refugees. How come most of the ones who have made it to Vancouver are rich and plonk down cash for million dollar homes? Beats me

After mulling it over I've increased the rating from a 5 to a 6 because of its Ozziness.

Intriguing and fantastic
pacman-8115 July 2020
The programme is based around a true story of four intwining stories set at an Australian refugee camp. You have a conflicted guard, Conflicted Boss, a broken refugee family and an Australian woman with severe mental health issues who shouldn't be locked up there played fantastically by the star of the show Yvonne Strahovski. This programme is a real eye opener that has you questioning how the world treats the less fortunate families coming from war torn dangerous countries.

Netflix is a huge platform with millions and millions of viewers .

The current generation of youngsters who are obsessed with the celebrity culture need to be educated on global immigration issues for a change. They will definitely learn something important .

I guess it had good intentions, but the result was weak
Zaffy-119 July 2020
I love Yvonne but her plot was like if it belonged to a different series and it wasn't even that well made. She was amazing but her story consumed way too much time and didn't let enough time for the important part of the series, which it was about how the whole refugee issue affects all people involved.

Instead of getting to know more the characters, refugees and guards and politicians, we spent what seemed more than half of the series with Yvonne's character having a constant nervous breakdown. Did the director liked to see her crying her eyes out or something? Cause it was dull and repetitive after a while.

As a result the whole thing felt incomplete, with a few strong moments.

Honest and sometimes brutal insight into lives of people with no place to call home
memememic2 March 2020
Now more then ever this series speak volumes about the crisis the world is faced with, showing us how when we have little to nothing to lose we can seek comfort in places we never thought of going. Cate Blanchett should get all the credit for bringing this important subject on the screen.

thempa-525597 August 2020
Based on true events , it is heartbreaking to watch this dismissel of humanness, by a country as Australia, Wich we deemed to be civel and right. Oh, how wrong we are. Racism is rampant, still in 2020 there. What an appaling sight. Watch this, people.

Important topic, but very poorly done
toniem1 September 2020
This is an important topic, and I strongly support the rights of asylum seekers. I am also Australian and would love to say something positive about an Australian series. But this series is both trite and unconvincing. The story line is weak - unsure about its focus; as concerned about an exceptional example of detention as it is about its ostensible subject. The direction is appalling - unrealistic fight scenes, depiction of police, public servants and asylum seekers. Do your homework. Casting? Well, I really don't know where to start. The depiction (caricature) of the Maori/islander staff member? The young male guard (feebly protecting himself in the corner as a woman throws pillows at him)? The police? Oh, yes, perhaps the 'preacher', unsure of what language he is speaking? Looking at the speed of the final credits, it appears that those involved seem to concur..............

Gritty , realism dumbed down by PC message
dale-5164929 July 2020
The story is a good one : Nice ,regular guy " Everyman " gets a job at an Australian detention center for undocumented persons , and they show the harsh conditions and cleverly jump around in time . They do backstories of detainees interestingly mixing in multiple characters. The protagonist is the strong silent type, a good guy who got his family into a decent single family home with a pool. As the story unfolds they show how it is difficult for a man with a good heart and a conscious to not change amongst the misery and violence of the camp's milieu. A touching story , but the way they portray "contemporary Dad" and his role at home is frightening ! For example : Dad arrives home one afternoon after a particularly stressful day , to find his wife stressed out and his kids running wild and screaming like deranged banshees . Instead of her shielding him from this mess he walks into , she rudely shoves one of her unruly kids into his face and announces "I'm taking a shower ". He then chases the poorly controlled kids around , and they are screaming "No" at him when he tells them to chill. He is very patient , no licks w his belt like the boomers would have gotten , he is restraining one of the boys on the couch safely , and the kid starts balling , likely apparently never having been told what to do before. The wife walks back in the room: "What the hell Are you doing ?"she is hysterical , obviously she doesn't approve of disciplining disrespectful kids , which explains why she doesn't have them under control when the poor guy gets home . "GET OUT " GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT" she screams, and he sheepishly leaves .The message this sends is frightening . That nice house he has ? Well there is today a Shortage of men to build them because boys coddled don't pursue the skilled trades , and those kids of his will likely have to live at home for free forever because mommy doesn't believe in any discipline. It could have been a good show but , I just wonder who writes stuff that advocates parents taking abuse from 5 year olds? , willful disobedience used to be trained out of kids , and people wonder why so few men learn functional skills today ? The other guards are fairly well cast , there is a sadistic manly female (yikes ) who steals the show w her realistic wanton misandry . Could have been an 8, looses points for PC wokeness .

A story about people just like you and me.
craigmichilis-6433410 December 2020
Whilst the "boats" will are continued to be used as a political tool creating fear and hate in the local community, it's easy to forget the human stories that bring people here. The world can be a terrible place and we can't shutter the windows and pretend it's not. I understand this is a one sided story, doesn't mean it shouldnt be told. Great cast and production.

An interesting and unusual tale so far!
Thinker36510 March 2020
If it hadn't been inspired by a true story, I would've rated it worse, given the majority of immigrants in the story are depicted as secondary characters to the plot. The depiction of the three guards unfortunately feels fairly contrived.

Is the only way an immigration/refugee story can be told in Australia or the wider Western world, irrespective of sympathy, if it is told through the eyes of someone who looks like Yvonne Strahovski? (Perhaps so, and she does do a great job. But her story ultimately breaks the mould and likely conflates the issues of mental health provision and immigration/asylum).

Who knows though, I remain unaware of how the central story plays out, but I look forward to the next episode. Definitely worth a watch!

WARNING: Viewer discretion is advised; some viewers easily triggered by immigration stories, may lash out wildly and incomprehensibly, in an effort to get attention. Please be aware, and maintain a safe distance at all times.

Solid start to an important story
rayclister2 March 2020
The first episode was essentially setting up the story of the main character (based on the Cornelia Rau experience) and the subplots of those that play a role in the context of later events. Cate Blanchett of course is the star power here and does not disappoint along with a strong supporting cast. Looking forward to see how this promising series progresses.

Anti climatic ending
zivsoondie13 July 2020
This is a good series with great actors. I feel for the characters and mostly the pace is ok, but the last episode dragged on and tried to «linger philosophically» when you just want to know what will happen. It is also an interesting that they built the whole story upon the one time a white australian woman was locked up with the refugees. Though I liked the story, it was moving, it is quite telling how we supposedly need that to relate as non-refugees... What I do like is that they dont show a one-sided image of the people involved, and it shows how decent people May change in Incredibly difficult circumstances, on both sides of the fence. There is a short description of the aftermath, but I am disapponted that they didnt follow it up.

Very good series but super slow moving. Could have been easily done in 4 episodes or a long movie. Too many repetitive scenes in trying to make a point.

Painfully real but so important!!
hmareike-151241 March 2020
I had the opportunity to attend the premiere at The Berlinale. I saw the first two episodes. It was intriguing and heartbreaking from start to finish. We often try to forget about the people, who are not as lucky as most of us are, who have to flee their country and their home. We way too often close our eyes. This shows us the brutal reality of Detention Centers. Can't wait for the next episodes!
