Closest to God - "A new European war"
As an art director of a film festival it is always really difficult to handle and manage each stage of the film selection process. Obviously the main focus is to give a chance to the best selected films, once awarded, to sneak into the cinema entertainment industry, proving that sometimes also small is beautiful.
The Manifesto of Social Machinery Film Festival is to promote democratic values, not yet fully established in modern societies or already sinking in a dissolution process, through uncensored news, responsible discussion, and open debate. Based on the conviction that the first requirement of democracy is a well informed community.
The film "Closest to God" is getting a reasonably wide release, which means that a worldwide audience will have a chance to discover an excellent low cost film production of the Ukraine film entertainment industry, and to reflect that sometimes entertainment doesn't always need a superhero to be super.
There's a creative use of the advanced techniques of storytelling in this film. "Closest to God" talks about the silent war in Ukraine, but it is not a war action movie. It is something more. A story of contemporary Ukraine presented by two families torn by war. Despite the silent war and the intermittent ceasefire, life goes on while children are still in school, city buses are still running, restaurants and bars are still open.
The presence of children so close to the artillery and snipers reveals the absurd coexistence of normal life so close to the bullets and the bombs.
Not much is audible over the noise of the artillery barrages, because this is a silent war ( a new European war ).
"Closest to God" features the grandfather's love story and episode at the Maidan (Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine) to which the father hadn't let the son go which later influenced his decision to allow him to go to the war, to keep their father-son spiritual connection.
True that we try that this film captures the essence of the human tragedy and heroism, the family's sacrifice in this new European war.
But here we have the living testimony of those who survived this sort of nightmare to tell us about it today.
The EU sought more Eastern European economies to enter into their trade agreements, while Ukraine main focus was further involvement with Western Europe's more modern and productive economies.
The situation is dangerously unstable and has the potential to spread on global scale very quickly. Further more we should also remember how a nation like Jugolslavia disappeared sinking in a total dissolution in few months. Without a public, open and expert debate about the reasons of this silent war, the complete establishment of security and cooperation in Ukraine will not be possible.
A critical review of research and historical revisitation on general causes and social dynamics of contemporary local and domestic war must be made.
We should thank the production team for the dedication to investigate and discover the truth and reason of this silent war.
