love this series

Cannot believe we are in Season 7 and I am still enjoying the series like it was Season 1.

I finally figured out one of the subtle touches that makes this ensemble cast work so well: At first glance, Martin is odd the man out.

Played brilliantly by Clunes, whether his problem is Aspbergers or Autism or whatever, a first viewer to the series would immediately assume that everyone is normal except for Martin.

And if that were the case, it would be a good series but not necessarily a great one.

Which is what I realized watching this episode. If you dig deeper, and "accept" Martin instead of being sensitive to him, you suddenly realize that everyone else in the story is slightly off, a few fries short of a Happy Meal, and Martin is the only one who is both upfront about, and consistent with, his quirks.

Once you accept this turnabout and start watching the other characters from Martin's POV, the series is more fun than a barrel of hammers.

Which woman is sicker and more screwy?
planktonrules17 February 2016
This episode seems to feature women--two of which seem a bit daffy. A new art teacher comes to town and she's ultra-bizarre and her strange craft collage scares the children. She also seems to annoy Martin after she moves in next door as she seems odd....with strange hearing problems, an inclination to fall down and more.

The other odd lady is the previously normal Dr. Timony (the therapist for Martin and Louisa). She has an accident and afterwords, she seems odd. Her self-judgment is now poor and when she interacts with folks she shows little common sense or discretion.

The third, and least important and least weird, is an American tourist (Sigourney Weaver in a bit role). She is appalled by the Doc's lousy bedside manner but she's also helped by him when she starts having some minor symptoms.

Additionally, Constable Penhale is amazingly offered a new job outside of Portwenn. Why anyone would think he was competent to do anything other than being an organ donor, I have no idea. And Penhale keeps asking his indifferent neighbors if he should leave. Only one seems to think he should stay.

Overall, this episode is an improvement over the last few--mostly because instead of focusing on Martin and Louisa and their VERY stagnant relationship, it's back on the townspeople and their interesting and quirky problems. Not one of the best episodes but clearly an improvement.

Head Trauma
Hitchcoc7 April 2018
I recently suffered a concussion with head trauma. It wasn't hard for me to sympathize with the disorientation and confusion of three characters in this episode. Dr. Timony begins by having another session with Martin and Louisa. She suggests that they take the step of writing positives about breaking up. Before she can meet with them, she has a car accident. The result is a change in personality. She becomes another person. There is a new art teacher who acts in bizarre ways and has no appreciation for the young students. And there is a bit part for Sigourney Weaver who comes rolling into town, espousing feminism from a less than happy past. Then, of course, there is the ongoing saga of the couple. Oh, and one other feature, is Penhale being offered a promotion, but he must move to Exeter. The results of his total incompetence is that there appears to be no crime in Portwenn. So he must be an awesome lawman. There is a striking ending as we move toward the last episode of Season 7.
