Silence... said a lot more than words!
mystiquem16 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As I watched the episode I've literally paused on the title credits for the first time, shocked (in a good way ) to see Denzel Washington had directed the episode. Instantly my expectations stepped up.

My favorite Grey's episode possibly in all 12 seasons & Denzel knocked it out the park!

We've been so used to having Meredith's (Pompeo)voice narrative carry us through an entire episode. It was oddly fresh having the silence carry you for a change. I must say Pompeo's performance in this episode trumps all; it was a powerhouse episode for her.

I would like to mention though that Justin Chambers' performance as well was endearing. His character's friendship with Meredith came through as transcendent.

At the end of the day what we needed to take away from this episode is that real recovery only comes through forgiveness; for oneself and the people who've wronged you! And words weren't needed for that.

Poor Meredith
LoveIsAStateOfMind14 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Poor old Meredith Grey - she hasn't exactly had a lot of luck since coming to work at Seattle Grace hospital. She almost got blown up by a bomb, drowns, almost gets shot, survives a plane crash, watches her sister die, watches her husband die - and this is to name but a few tragic events - and now she gets beaten up by a patient and ends up in hospital for weeks. That's enough to put anyone off becoming a surgeon in America!

However, this is TV and whilst I do feel like Meredith must be the unluckiest doctor ever, !angstyMeredith does make for good drama. This episode was really interesting and cleverly filmed/written for maximum impact. Plus it made for some wonderful Alex/Meredith scenes. I only wish that they mentioned something in passing about Cristina coming to visit Meredith.

Everybody in this damn room is her family. - Alex.

Emotional !!

The hospital was so busy no one even saw or heard Meredith getting attacked. Poor Meredith. My heart really hurt for her because she has been through so much already. Then, Alex tearing up had my heart melting.

I really felt for Amelia because I bet when she saw Meredith on the table, it brought back memories of Derek dying. All she could do was stand there and feel shocked. I hope Amelia & Meredith will forgive one another eventually.

Great Alex & Meredith scenes... their friendship is timeless.

Good for Meredith for seeing the patient who attacked her... I know it took all of her strength to do that.

Jackson serves April with divorce paper. I can smell the drama a mile away.

If you're not already totally in love with Alex (you should be in my opinion) you will be after this episode. Justin Chambers' acting is top, I love it.

Great episode in general

Warning: Spoilers
But once again Amelia has everyone bending to her will, forgiving her, walking on eggshells around her and her being the focus. She needs to be forgiven. She needs to be accepted. She needs to be able to do what she did. Everything is always about her (and Jo since last season it seems) in one way or another.

Meredith suffers a traumatic loss soon enough after her husband died... but nope, Amelia is the one who needs coddling. Amelia is the one who gets to lash out and people should accept it because of her volatility.

How on earth is she even a good hire and not to mention chief of neurosurgery is something ridiculous. Her excuse is she was a drunk and drug abuser so she gets away with any and everything from being more mad at Meredith because Derek died, or calling Meredith a poor widow and mocking her, or just lashing out at anyone and everyone who allows her since they all do.

Meredith has enough moments to just edge the episode out but Amelia is possibly the most insufferable character the show has had to date and just rather unpleasant more often than not.

For as much as Bailey thinks she's too self important over the years, she learns and adapts at least with a lot more pleasant moments from her than Amelia ever could have perhaps.

The other annoying character is Jo who is also so insecure her self worth depends on everyone acknowledging her because she's so incapable of fathoming things othwrsise.

Shame the wrong shepherd was killed off and Jo is the way she is.

One of the Best
thoughtsappear16 November 2023
This is one of the best episodes of Grey's Anatomy, maybe even one of the best tv episodes of all time. They did such a good job putting you in Meredith's place and experiencing her fear, confusion, frustration. When Alex started crying, I knew it was serious. This show knows how to bring the feels. As a mother, that scene with Meredith and her kids just broke my heart. I think every actor was on their A game in this episode, but Ellen Pompeo just killed it. She had to go through so many different emotional places in just a short 45 minutes and she really made me believe every minute of it. I also really loved the actor who played Lou, even though he did something awful, you knew he was a good person and you couldn't hate him.

Best episode of Grey's
liscam3 February 2024
This episode... Some of the absolute best acting of the series and I believe it's because Mr. Washington brought that out of the cast through his direction.

I raised an eyebrow when I found out Ellen Pompeo was rude to Mr. Washington because he was doing things differently than what they have done before. Made me look at her different.

But Mr. Washington knocked this episode out of the stratosphere. From the silence instead of narration to the incredible acting.

Justin Chambers, the subtlety of his emotions at certain times. Chef's kiss.

I know Denzel is stepping away from directing now but I wish he wouldn't. This was the most gut wrenching episode.
