Assassin’s Creed has always had the advantage of being able to experiment with numerous historical settings, with each game set in a different era and usually introducing a new protagonist. Not only does this help Ubisoft keep things fresh even 17 years after the series’ debut, but it also covers a wide range of content that fans of varied tastes can get behind.
From the streets of Italy to the open world of Greece, the fanbase has visited places all across the globe, but long before the studio launched the trailer for Shadows, the community had been asking for a game set in Japan.
Now that Assassin’s Creed is finally taking action to a historical Japanese period, it raises a concerning sentiment. The franchise shouldn’t have taken this long to listen to the fans, because it may be too late.

Six days ahead of the launch of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Microsoft and Ninja Theory have decided to drop a little recap trailer for those who “walked in late”. In other words, if you missed out on playing the excellent Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, this new video explains the events that transpired prior to Hellblade II.
For those that do need reminding, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice centres on Senua, a Celtic warrior who embarks on a vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. The BAFTA-winning title is noteworthy for its frank and novel approach to psychosis, coupled with its excellent story and characters.
The sequel, which was announced back in 2019, once again centres on Senua, who sets out on “a brutal journey of survival through the myth and torment of Viking Iceland”, intent on saving those who have suffered under Norse tyranny.

CinemaCon attendees Wednesday got a first look at Focus Features’ second film with Robert Eggers, Nosferatu, a dark and gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her which causes untold horror in its wake.
Introducing the footage, Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said, “This ain’t your father’s Nosferatu” and promised it will give “new meaning to the term Christmas feast when we open on December 25.”
In the footage, we see the terror and hysteria rampant in the village as various townsfolk shriek, “He is coming” after the young woman calls to him seemingly in a nighttime trance. “My dreams grow darker,” she says, and asks Willem Dafoe’s Professor Von Franz, “Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?”

Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" was an unexpectedly large hit in the United States, and currently holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing Japanese-language Godzilla film in U.S. box office history. "Minus One" is also unique in the Godzilla canon in that it affects an optimistic worldview. Several Godzilla movies in the franchise tended to zero in on Godzilla's horrifying nuclear origins, pointing out that the monster is the direct result of atomic testing. Humans were only able to destroy Godzilla in Ishiro Honda's 1954 film "Gojira" by creating a new weapon even more devastating than the atomic bomb. That film is sad and dour and pessimistic. In contrast, "Godzilla Minus One" is about how ingenuity and redemption are still possible after World War II, and that humans needn't be hopeless or obsessed with death. It's okay, "Minus One" argues, to let go of the violence.

In a surprising turn of events at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024, the second season of Vinland Saga found itself overlooked in favor of Jujutsu Kaisen for the Anime of the Year title. The decision has sparked outcry and disappointment among fans, who feel that the epic Viking saga was unjustly snubbed despite being nominated in ten categories.
Fans took to social media platforms to express their frustration, with many labeling the outcome as “daylight robbery” and criticizing the credibility of the awards. Despite its critical acclaim and dedicated fanbase, Vinland Saga failed to secure a single award, leaving supporters questioning the legitimacy of the selection process.
One disgruntled fan exclaimed, “The fact that Vinland Saga didn’t win a single award just proves that this is literally the worst anime awards of all time“. Another lamented, “Can’t even think how Jjk is even close to this work of art...

Before “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” became synonymous with Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler, the song from Michael Bay’s 1998 science fiction disaster flick Armageddon had its beginnings in another romance. Performed by Aerosmith, the power ballad was written by prolific song writer Diane Warren, who was inspired by an exchange between Barbra Streisand and husband James Brolin.
In her new memoir My Name is Barbra, Streisand writes about lying in bed with Brolin one night, when he told her, “I don’t want to fall asleep.

We’re hours away from Barbra Streisand’s memoir, My Name is Barbra, and stories are starting to emerge from the long-anticipated tome. In a new interview with the BBC, Streisand recounted one of the many tales she tells in the 992-page book — and it’s an impressive flex.
In the book, Streisand admitted to some hilarious diva-like behavior, including the time she called up Apple CEO Tim Cook to complain about the way Siri was pronouncing her name.
“My name isn’t spelled with a ‘Z,'” she said.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Afire (Christian Petzold)
Writing recently about the introduction of video umpires in baseball, of all things, Zach Helfand was skeptical: “accuracy is not the same as enjoyment,” he wrote, “baseball is meant to kill time, not maximize it.” The best films of German director Christian Petzold do both, though you sense his heart might belong to the latter. Petzold’s latest, Afire, unfurls with all the page-turning seduction of a gripping novella. It stars Thomas Schubert as a struggling writer who travels with a friend to a secluded house near the Baltic Sea. Their car breaks down. They encounter a beautiful woman. Somewhere in the distance, a forest fire rages. Soon, inevitably, another burns inside. – Rory O. (full review)

Can you get the same satisfaction from a round of “NBA 2K” as you can from dunking in real life? Is a trip to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park good enough to check off “African safari” on your bucket list? Does pelting your brother-in-law’s best man with paintballs at the bachelor party make you a combat veteran? Look away if you don’t want to spoil the answers, but: No, no, and no, and puttering around a Quonset hut pretending to be an astronaut isn’t the same thing as hitching a rocket to Mars, either.

"You are a near-perfect replica of our crew." A festival promo trailer is out to watch for this funky sci-fi Quebecois film titled Viking, which is premiering at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival underway right now. A behavioral research team observes and attempts to replicate the experiences of the first manned mission to Mars. TIFF adds more: "The latest from Stéphane Lafleur (Tu dors Nicole) balances absurdist humour with poignant reflection on the human condition as it follows the subjects of behavioural research — and the astronauts they mirror — in advance of the first manned mission to Mars." The film stars Steve Laplante, Larissa Corriveau, Fabiola N. Aladin, Hamza Haq, Denis Houle, Marie Brassard, and Martin-David Peters. Our friend at Quiet Earth watched this already, saying that "it's that rare kind of science fiction where gadgets and fantasy are overshadowed by the mysteries of the human psyche, and arguably Lafleur’s finest film to date.

The Toronto Film Festival has programmed one of its strongest Canadian feature slates in recent years — films with head-turning performances, eye-catching artistry, and global market and audience appeal, from filmmakers who are subverting stereotypes, challenging or bypassing power structures, or transforming the industry ecosystem from the grassroots on up.

Netflix is about to remove a alrge selection of movies and TV shows from its service.
Every month, without fanfare, numerous titles are removed from the streamer.
This means that, should something be on your watchlist, it will vanish until it’s added again.
Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.
But, with help from the team at What’s on Netflix, we’ve compiled the full list – and you can find the compilation of everything being added this month here.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival marked the return of the theatrical blockbuster.
Following their Croisette premieres, Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis helped reignite the post-covid box office. The former has earned 1.4 billion worldwide, including more than 700 million domestically. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is nowhere near that level, but with a 145 million domestic haul and a 270 million worldwide gross to date, it clearly shows the popcorn-munching crowd was hungry to return to cinemas, at least for big-budget studio releases with plenty of wiz-bang and razzle-dazzle.
Can Venice give the indie industry a similar push? The Venice Film Festival, which opens on Wednesday, Aug. 31 and runs through Sept. 10, kicks off the fall film season, traditionally the strongest quarter for “speciality” movies and art house fare. “Me, My Mom & Sharmila,” the feature directorial debut of queer Muslim writer-director Fawzia Mirza, has set its cast.
The film will feature Amrit Kaur, the breakout star of Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble’s HBO Max series “The Sex Lives of College Girls”; Hamza Haq, who won best actor in 2021 and 2022 at the Canadian Screen Awards for CTV medical drama “Transplant”; and Nimra Bucha.
Set in 1999, the film follows Azra (Kaur) over 48 hours as she travels from her home in Canada to her parents’ homeland of Pakistan to bury her father (Haq). Last month, we learned that Lionsgate is funding a horror film based on the novel Creepers (pick up a copy Here) by First Blood author David Morrell. At the time, it was said that Skylan Brooks (The Darkest Minds) would be one of the film’s cast members – but Deadline reports that Brooks is no longer involved with the project. Taking over the role he was going to play is Shane Paul McGhie, who is best known for playing the role of Landon in After and After We Collided. (McGhie then passed the role over to Chance Perdomo for After We Fell.)
Creepers tells the story of
a group of young urban explorers who plan to investigate an old, boarded up, seemingly abandoned hotel, only to encounter danger at every turn in the form of a competing group of hostile urban explorers seeking to find a legendary hidden treasure as...

Emily charts the romantic life of Emily Brontë in the lead-up to her classic novel Wuthering Heights. Hawa, the follow-up to Doucouré’s 2020 Sundance and Berlin entry Cuties, centres on a teenage girl who sets off to get adopted by one of the most powerful women in the world.

When the ambitious and much-anticipated Viking epic “The Northman” came out earlier this year, director Robert Eggers seemed poised to be the talk of cinema’s discourse. While there were terrific reviews (including ours) in various interviews, Eggers seemed disappointed, expressing concern about his final cut of the film and the shelving of several of his ideas for future projects. As the costly movie underperformed at the box office, the acclaimed director seems to be at a crossroads.

Could Robert Eggers‘ “The Northman” release have sparked renewed interest in revisiting “Hamlet”? The Viking epic is based on the original Scandinavian tale that directly influenced William Shakespeare’s beloved story of revenge and murder. Now, a new modern film version of “Hamlet” is on the horizon from Oscar-winners Riz Ahmed and Aneil Karia.
The duo recently won Oscars for Best Short Film thanks to the terrific picture “The Long Goodbye,” and Deadline reports they are now looking to re-imagine the “Hamlet” story with a thriller edge.

As typical for a weekend before the release of a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, there were no major new releases on the box office charts. That left Universal/DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys” to easily hold the No. 1 spot with a 16.1 million second weekend and a 44.4 million domestic total.
Of the three non-franchise films that came out last weekend, “The Bad Guys” had the strongest hold with just a 33 drop from its 23.9 million opening weekend, putting the film on its way to crossing 100 million at the worldwide box office. Such a hold indicates that “The Bad Guys” is getting traction among families as they continue to return to theaters this spring — and that could allow it to leg out through May as counterprogramming to “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is in second with 11.4 million in its fourth weekend, passing the first “Sonic” to...

Refresh for chart and more analysis After all the hallelujahs about the return of theatrical at CinemaCon this past week, the major studios skipped out on programming any new wide releases this weekend. All of this is resulting in a marketplace which is seeing an estimated 64M in total ticket sales, down 33 from last weekend. Ugh. In regards to when the majors will sit on the sidelines again this year, it’s set to happen on June 3 and possibly Aug. 12 (Searchlight is holding the date for an untitled wide entry).

As exhibitors gather in Las Vegas for their annual CinemaCon convention this week, this weekend’s box office will provide their rallies with optimism. It fell short of 100 million, but there’s a few talking points to battle the concern that theaters are too franchise dependent.
It also provided a case study in balance: Four films grossed over 10 million, a one-unremarkable statistic. However, this weekend was the first instance in more than two years.
DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” (Universal) topped this weekend, placing #1 at a better-than-expected 24 million. Family films often do well, but this performance came in the face of Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” sequel and Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.”
Two more original titles debuted with “The Northman” (Focus) and “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” (Lionsgate). Robert Eggers’ Viking epic came in at 12 million, while the very meta Nicolas Cage-as-Nicolas Cage action comedy made over 7 million.

“The Northman” opens in theaters this weekend, and Robert Eggers’ Viking epic has already attracted plenty of attention for its period accuracy, unapologetic maximalism, and Alexander Skarsgård naked on a volcano. The film culminates in a massive battle that takes place inside an Icelandic volcano that took weeks to choreograph and film, with Skarsgård spending much of his time wearing a skimpy thong on set. And apparently, he still owns it.
Appearing on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Skarsgård revealed that he was given the used thong as a gift at the end of the shoot.
“The end fight takes place on an erupting volcano and we’re naked,” he said. “I mean, where else would it be set? So, that’s what I wore for a week, and my character’s quite wounded so he’s bleeding a lot, profusely, so that was my wrap gift.”
