Pretty solid finale to a very solid season (although next season looks even more promising).
My one issue with Orphan Black is that it often saves almost everything for the finale. That was more true than ever in this season, for better or for worse. Having all your plot threads reach a climax all at once can be incredibly satisfying, but you also run the risk of making the lead up seem painfully stretched and the payoff incredibly rushed (like Game of Thrones season 5). That isn't entirely the case with this season, but I do wish they could have spread the big moments throughout the season a little more. Now that I've seen how the story played out, I know that wouldn't have been possible. Still, it would have lent a greater sense of cohesion to the season. As it was, there were times when the show felt somewhat aimless this year, as if there was no central plot driving it, and the finale felt like it had a bit too much packed in. The episode just had so many plots running all at once that it became hard to follow.

As a result of this lack of narrative cohesion, this season emerges as one of the weaker seasons of the show for me (while still great). However, I do not at all think that this is the beginning of the "downfall" of the show. Far from it. The next season looks VERY promising, especially after all the twists of this episode. For the first time since the second season, I can clearly envision them having a single central narrative that carries through the entire season. There have been individual episodes that bring everything together (such as the fantastic 'The Scandal of Altruism'), but for the most part things have drifted apart as they went along. Next season looks to reverse that tide, which is perfect timing given that it will be the last season.

In case I have been talking too much about the season as a whole and not enough about this specific episode, I shall dedicate this section to the episode. I thought it was great. There was a whole lot going on, and there were some moments when the sheer amount of information became overwhelming. When I heard that this episode end on a cliffhanger, I was admittedly trepidacious. There are some unanswered questions from this season that I really wish had been answered in this season, but none of the cliffhangers introduced in this episode bothered me. In fact, I think they were kind if brilliant.

I hope my review has not come across as too critical. I've really enjoyed this show, this season, and this episode. It's mostly great, and I'm really looking forward to next season.

Brilliant and Captivating show of the modern era. James Frain was amazing.

I rarely bother writing a review on any titles even the ones that blow my mind but after a twist-filled and entertaining season of Orphan Black I have truly come to appreciate the show's brilliance and extra efforts put on the stories/plots on top of Tat's clone scenes. It's on Netflix too so i can joyfully re-watch some amazing episodes from earlier seasons. As usual the acting has been phenomenal from all actors and you- know-who. This season has been the most coherent yet deliciously complex for me-I adore thought-provoking stuff! The humor especially from the Hendrix combo and sweet villainy of Rachel was welcome as usual. But most of all I have come to appreciate the yummy cinematography and the music editing, just top notch!

But my favorite thing since last season is the recurrence of the suave James Frain (no villain like a Frain villain), I love this guy in the countless stuff I have seen him in but most of all he fits right in the show's class being all classy and stuff.

[8.1] The other 48 days!
cjonesas31 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Well, as I feared, when you leave all stuff for the last episode, that's what happens. Very good acting on top of not so plausible storyline plots in a rushed illogical way.

The filming, photography were great though, it's just that the mentioned won't save it from a certain downfall, even temporary.

That being said, I don't agree with viewers belittling Rachel's capabilities and mischievous abilities. When someone puts her mind to something, to destroy it or do great damage to it, even the bravest persons can be shocked and temporarily incapacitated by that sheer will. That's what happened to Sarah and that could be seen in her eyes as well as the weakness that came across her mother who couldn't pull the trigger. You have to be in those situations to fully understand that. Sitting comfortably in your chair, lamenting and giving councils and "orders" won't do you any good and won't be seen as superior.

Nevertheless, that wasn't the finale that I expected, it was way weaker than imagined and has sort of become Lost on island "weeds", resembling "The other 48 days".

Looking strongly forward to the last season. Don't ... it up!

Didn't like the end of the season
dayavas_0019 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The season has been very good, but the final episode was forced, the writers could do a better job. 2 scenes that didn't understand the end of them:

1. When Cosima hears Susan talking through phone about her real plans of starting again the cloning...And Cosima confronts her and Susan locks her in the room. The most intelligent action, because Cosima is very smart, was to keep her mouth shut and start planning how she would get the base line and escape.

If the idea was that Cosima had to end in the woods to be rescued by the mystery man and being taken to where Delphine was, a better sequence of scenes would be to make Cosima confront Rachel and when this one, tries to kill her, fight and escape to the forest, etc.

2. Sarah's trip to the island, completely unnecessary. The only uses for the scene are:

a. To set the base for Rachel's boyfriend to kidnap her family, but even with Sarah there, it was possible.

b. To leave Sarah in the island for next season. This one makes more sense.

I mean, what was the purpose of going to the island to leave the weapon over a table, knowing that Rachel could be around. Other thing, why Susan took the weapon if she didn't had the intention to use it? She knows that Rachel is going to damage the life of millions, and even though, didn't pull the trigger, WRONG!!! The whole scene doesn't have sense.

If Rachel really wanted to killed Sarah, why didn't chased her when she took the gun from Susan? Sarah was hurt, was an easy to follow prey.

Sorry, but, this has been a really good series and the season 4 finale was typical of series that start to force situations when don't have more argument. I expect something better for next season.

Classic Hollywood crap to continue the story

Warning: Spoilers
*spoilers*

First episode of Orphan Black that I sincerely dislike. What a stupid finale. Rachel, who can't even walk properly, goes on a killing spree. I mean come on, seriously? Fine, stabbing her mother may have worked, but then hitting Sarah with a stick and Sarah can't do anything about it? And Sarah has to run away instead of trying to kill Rachel? BULL*********... + Sarah goes alone on that island knowing it's dangerous, of course.. Really stupid episode, I can't imagine how it's rated 9.3.. From a favorite show right down to classic bullshit, Rachel is like a god or something, she can't even die man seriously, lame. very lame

Sorry to burst your bubble
kingsx_649 February 2020
The latest 'bad guys' win the entire year, only for the 'good guys' to win in the last 30 seconds of the season finale format has been around for a few years. I've never liked it. But Orphan Black's season 4 finale doesn't even do that. All year bad guys have upper hand. With no good guy wins, it just becomes childish and monotonous. And in the finale, they get beat down again. I agree with the other reviewers that thought Sarah getting beat up by a cripple was just lazy writing. In fact, I didn't understand why Cosima ran away, when all she had to do was knock out Rachel. I mean how hard would that have been to do considering Rachel CAN'T EVEN STAND!?. Very disappointing to the average OB fan, but I understand there are some who feel the show can do no wrong. Well sorry to burst your bubble, they did.
