A mix of Hellsing and Fate
yorae17 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
After watching 6 episodes of Drifters I came here to see a review of what others thought but there are none so I must now do so. I'm not going to try to spoil anything but I tagged it anyways because the review warning blacklist was intimidating.

The animation style is heavily reminiscent of the original Hellsing, which is to say it's not amazing in detail or precision but has a dark artistic vibe to it. Personally I really like it except for the way the main characters nose is but that's a minor issue. There are short cut scenes that are in a style of a "short person nature" for humour, if your idea of humour is having Nobunaga Oda burning down peasants wheat fields. (Which mine apparently is)

The basic plot has random war heroes from seemingly any point in time, which were about to meet their death, taken to the gates of life and death. Instead of ascending or descending, a mysterious clerk assigns them to a door, in the main characters case, Midgard. I say Midgard because there are a lot of "not quite" humans in the new world they are at but it seems to take the people from their more traditional historical narratives.

We haven't gotten too many actual names yet and I don't want to spoil much but we get all sorts such as the Shimazu, Minamoto, and Oda for Japan. Hannibal and Scipio for the Rome and Carthage. Even Gilles "french word" Rais, who was featured in Fate. I mean you can just look at the shows cast and see all this and more. (For example Joan of Arc is here and I didn't realize until reading it here)

It's bloody and unapologetic but within reason, not too gory or having an excess of forced sex like some other shows but doesn't hide that it has happened either. Nobunaga's tactics involving a lot of feces are crude but quite viable and he's an absolute madman. They did a good job showing off his demonic personality while still humanizing him quite a bit.

Honestly, this is the show I had hoped Fate was going to be when I first heard about the base concept and personal bias I would give this show a 10 but I understand that it has flaws and wanted to give a more accurate review for others to judge by.

This is a one-time watch masterpiece. What I would like to say to all people who are intending to watch this, please do not under any circumstances drop it at the first episode. I know the animation takes some getting used to and the plot may seem weird initially, but latest by episode two you will notice the true value of this anime and most likely binge watch it in less than 6 hours. Brilliant plot, very satisfying moments and at times some good comedy.

What are you waiting for? Go watch it!

Warning: Spoilers
One Word: GLORIOUS. How about A series with Adolf Hitler, Oda Nobunaga, and Hannibal In the same time? Glorious. If you love History, you will love it. But, have you ever thought how a Japanese Zero fighter fares against a Dragon? Or, How a Gatling Gun Fares Against a Sword? Or, How good a Human Gun made by the Dwarfs work? Or, maybe, an Aircraft Carrier against a Man'O'War? Watch It.

I love this anime

Kouta Hirano has really gave this all he had . and i gotta admit it was a success . this is a battle royal full of heroes legends and epic real characters of our world fighting a brand new war like what the title suggests , it's full of action scenes and blood sights and they are all well made , that's what u can expect from someone who made hellsings , the thing is you don't see the negative points of hellsing in it the original hellsing was so slow and nothing really happened after 13 episodes as u see in the hellsing ultimate they put all of the original 13 episodes in what ? 3 episode ! so it would bored you .and in the ultimate they ruined the characters and made them into what they are not and it wasn't near good at what they were in original hellsing but in drifters , characters are perfect you would love them after 2 episodes and the anime is not boring or slow at all its exciting ! it's well drawn and the graphics are beautiful ..Kouta Hirano was always obsessed with eyes and here he completed his eye development ! the world he created is not that much difernt form our own earth so he actually brought some beasts and creatures to our world and then add the characters .. i like the story and characters development is really nice you would love to know more about them ... for bad points i can say its a Cliché ..elfs dwarfs dragons goblins ...what are those ? those are Cliché there are few new things in this anime ...and the other bad point would be its awfully Nationalistic ...yes it is like everyone form japan are just perfect and supper cool but other from rest of the world are crazy ,messed up ,old and obviously not cool as the Japanese aside from these if you wanna watch a good anime with sword fights gun fights dragon fights air battles sea battles in the other word full of fights including your favorite historical real heroes u must watch this

Nice Anime & Plot with scope in storytelling.
mayank0987616 February 2018
I loved the plot and the animation itself is great, got lots of violence and humor too. It's the terrible storytelling and characters along with the dub and sub which spoiled the experience.

The setting is a medieval fantasy world with elves, dwarves, orcs, humans, and dragons. There is a war going on between the humans and the rest of the species. The twist is famous personalities with military background from earth are transferred there after their death, these guys are called Drifters. It's interesting to see how these famous people change the world around them with life-giving them a second chance. Facing them are Ends, these again seem to be famous personalities but ones who died a painful death. The ends also have mystical powers to supplement their personality.

My complaint with the anime is the focus on Japanese personality which the people outside Japan won't know about. The ones known the world over like Hannibal and Joan of Arc are given weird personalities. I would have loved it if they would have pitted a Hannibal vs Rommel. These unknown famous guys from Japan just don't hold the interest for me.

The Eng dub for the anime was missing for most of the episodes so I had to shift to sub, even that use to skip out on 2-3 minutes of gag scenes.

Hidden gem

A group of people from different era's in time, each own a great skill and are sent to a strange foreign land where there's demons, elves, dwarfs etc and they fight a battle for the greater good. Overall I can't fault this series, it has a great story, great characters and is also just worth watching just for the animation, action scenes and gore. Also there's subtitled and dubbed versions of it

Very very good isekai battle anime and I just love the art too!
Irishchatter9 September 2019
Just as my review says, this anime is definitely one of the most decent ones I've ever seen in a long time. Art is splendid, comedy was funny and English Dub cast including Josh Grelle as Toyohisa did such a well done job with every badass character you can find and storyline was top notch.

This is one of the best isekai series to watch folks, seriously!!!!

Entertainment capacity
martin_merelesc3 March 2022
By the time I finished watching Drifters, I was not only impressed by the overall content, but also for its ability to entertain. If you have a sense of humor, then this will definitely be worth every minute of time. If you take it too seriously, though, then Drifters will probably feel more like a chore to watch. I would absolutely recommend Drifters even if you're not a fan of the author's works. I can't say this enough, but Hirano's ability to express his ideas are just too damn entertaining to evade.

I loved the artsyle and soundtrack.
Lukasmj15 November 2022
The year 1600, the decisive moment in the Battle of Sekigahara. After the strategic retreat, Toyohisa Shimazu, a commander of the Shimazu clan in Satsuma, flees alone into the mountains, eventually finding himself in a corridor with countless doors. There he encounters a mysterious man named Murasaki, but before Toyohisa can ask him a question, he is sent to the other side of a stone door. The commander enters places, an alternative world in which so-called demon people live alongside humans. Together with Nobunaga Oda, Yoichi Nasu and other heroes who have come to this world from different times, Toyohisa plunges into the battles of another universe as a samurai.

"Drifters" has aroused my interest with its "Hellsing-like animation" and, like "Hellsing", manages to tell an entertaining story, if not exactly deep, with this animation.

The coming together of fighters from different eras is a brilliant idea and the soundtrack just doesn't let you skip the intro.

I really wish the anime got a second season.
