LucasFilm has recently opened up a new studio dedicated to the creation and launch of games based on George Lucas’ iconic cinematic franchises. While LucasFilm Games might not quite measure up to the LucasArts of old just yet, it’s clear that the Star Wars series is going to be a priority for the studio, as it was for its predecessor. This expansion of the brand has already led to original titles like Squadrons and Jedi: Survivor getting launched to phenomenal success.
However, LucasFilm is also dipping into the archives and celebrating older titles with remastered editions of the likes of Battlefront and Jedi Dark Forces. The latter is an especially important title in Star Wars history that spawned many sequels. However, the Dark Forces series also highlights a major culture of cancelation at LucasFilm, with a mysterious, suspected final Dark Forces entry seemingly getting canned before it could ever...

"Star Wars Rebels" is one of the best things to ever happen to "Star Wars." This is an animated show that has become essential to understanding the overall franchise: a show with a great ensemble, different-looking lightsabers, a fantastic fight between Maul and Obi-Wan, and which shone a light on the origins of the Rebellion years before "Andor."
But before "Rebels," there was "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed." This action-adventure video game tells an original story about "Starkiller," born Galen Marek. He is the child of a Jedi who is taken in by Darth Vader and trained as his secret apprentice to track down and kill any Jedi who survived Order 66 -- much like the Inquisitors that would later become canon. Years later, Vader gives his apprentice a new task — to plant the seeds for what will become the Rebel Alliance, which Vader will then use to overthrow the Emperor.

When The Force Unleashed was first announced at E3 2006, it looked poised to be the most ambitious Star Wars game ever made, and 16 years later it is an underrated classic, but it also marked the beginning of the end for Lucasfilm’s legendary game development division, LucasArts. Changes in strategy and restructuring within the company, the lackluster performance of The Force Unleashed II, and a massive sale in 2012 that saw Disney acquire Lucasfilm and all its assets from George Lucas were the final nails in the coffin of the publisher that less than a decade earlier had released Knights of the Old Republic.
But in 2006, there was just our first look at The Force Unleashed, an action-adventure game that promised to unlock the full potential of the Force, whether that meant launching massive waves of electricity from your finger tips, destroying the sci-fi environments around you, or bringing down an...

While most Star Wars fans will recognize Sam Witwer as the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, the actor really made his franchise debut playing Starkiller in 2008’s third-person action blockbuster, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Not only was Starkiller the main protagonist at the heart of the game, but Witwer would also go on to reprise his role in the 2010 sequel, too.
Even though The Force Unleashed series sold pretty well, the third follow-up never quite came to fruition. This was mainly due to problems during development, but also thanks to the fact that the Star Wars video game license would ultimately go on to be acquired by EA in 2013.
During a recent interview with IGN, Witwer was asked about the original plans for The Force Unleashed threequel and according to the Star Wars voice actor, the third Force Unleashed video...

As is the case for much of the extended universe material now considered non-canon by Disney, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed still maintains a loyal fanbase to this day. Released way back in 2008 for last-gen consoles, LucasArts’ well-received single-player adventure was one of the studio’s last, prior to the majority of its staff being laid off by the house of Mickey Mouse. Today, the company exists largely as a licensor, no longer having a hand in the franchise’s video game division.
That job has since fallen to EA, of course, which, following a number of disappointing releases, finally delivered one worth shouting about last year in the form of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. In retrospect, Respawn’s first foray into a Galaxy Far, Far Away shares many similarities to Force Unleashed in a gameplay sense but narratively? Not so much. Actor Sam Witwer’s turn as Darth...

Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm back in 2012 has, and continues to be something of a double-edged sword. Had the deal never have taken place, fans would never have been gifted the excellence that is Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian. Love it or hate it, too, J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson’s controversial Sequel Trilogy introduced an entirely new generation of children to George Lucas’ beloved sci-fi universe, but at what cost?
In order to untangle a number of narrative knots and contradictions, Disney opted to eschew a large amount of Expanded Universe Star Wars material, recategorizing it as non-canon under a new banner: Star Wars Legends. Many of those discarded elements have subsequently returned to canon thanks to shows like Star Wars Rebels and the aforementioned Mandalorian, of course, and fans are now hoping that Disney sees fit to bring back a certain popular character from the games.

(Note: This post contains lots of spoilers for “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”)
There are so many references to other “Star Wars” stories, characters and events in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” that it’s actually easy to miss them. From showing how Han Solo got his lucky dice, to explaining how the Millennium Falcon can “talk” to C-3Po in “The Empire Strikes Back,” to jokes about Lando Calrissian’s eventual life as the “respectable” administrator of a mining colony, the movie is packed full of “Star Wars” lore.
But “Solo” also knows its “Star Wars” history, and works in a lot of references tothings that more casual fans might have missed. The movie calls back not only to the films, but cartoons that take place between the prequels and original trilogy, and even makes clever references to the no-longer-canon “Star Wars” Expanded Universe of comics, games and novels from before Disney acquired Lucasfilm.
