Warning: Spoilers
The story of Gay Liberation in this country will never be told with all facts because for many years a lot of it was in the closet. It has not been that long since Katherine Hepburns desires for women finally got outed in a book, long after her death. The closet hiding Gay People was very very deep and secretive back in the years prior to the late 1960's and beyond. That is when main stream media really started to change.

Prior to that, openly Gay characters were only rarely featured in any media, though the 1950's did have some ground breaking films on the subject. The thing is society considered such behavior taboo for a long time, and the discrimination in the main stream remained strong against gays until after the Civil Rights Movement. Then, things started to happen.

This episode does a good job of introducing the subject. Timelines are kind of vague here and the women in this seem more into each other than they were back at the start. I think the exaggeration is deliberate, as even today most women are not that aggressively into each other. The difficult thing is sketching the women who behave more like men accurately. I think it is still difficult to present them with the real aggressive edge they had back then, because it would not appeal to a main stream audience at all.

It is good that this issue is getting on. Whether or not our Government Income Tax agencies really should be involved in knowing who is in our bedrooms is something that should scare all of us, but that predates the start of gay liberation. In this first episode, Guy Pearce as Cleve Jones impressed me the most, playing a gay male who seems to relate to gay women well. This is a difficult role but he brings it off very well here. Several actresses are notable for their performances here an it is interesting how a couple of them develop their personal relationship amid all the meeting and organizing going on.

I am looking forward to watching the next episode as this series continues to develop. The biggest political icon of the gay liberation movement, Harvey Milk, has already gotten mention here.

Pleasantly Surprised

I have to admit I was a little on the fence about watching this. Mainly because of a few reviews, but I'm very happy I did not let those dissuade me from doing so! As this first episode was excellent. If this is any indicator of the future quality of the series it will be great TV. This episode surpassed my expectations and I highly recommend you give it a watch.
