1.114: Sonnet 110: A good stab at a narrative with the sonnet at its core
There is a strong sense of regret at the past actions of the writer here – actions which treated their relationship unfairly and risked everything about it. In this film we see these words put into the mind of a young woman who has played the field, risking the relationship that is worth the most for the sake of some stolen kisses etc with other men in bars. Although it is not perfect in its delivery and structure, it is welcome to have the Sonnet Project return to building a story around the sonnet text. The last few film had been fairly solid delivery of the text but not always managing to do much with it. In this case it does a solid job of making the text accessible and putting the meaning and feeling into a modern context.
The fading special effects, and male actors, are not great, but the lead female is pretty good. She wears her regret well, and plays out the relationships in snippets in ways that convince as to them happening but also her motivations within them (we know love in some, but desire in others). I would have liked to see the film trust her more and let her do more with her face without the need for the fading in/out people (which labors the point which it was already making well enough) but it still works well and it felt more like the films of the Sonnet Project which I have connected to the most.
