Hilary Duff takes it to the next level in REACH OUT. After showing us how nicely she has matured in PLAY WITH FIRE, the teen idol, perhaps taking a tip from Madonna some fifteen years before, runs a gamut of sexually-laden imagery guaranteed to make everybody sit up and notice, however superficially executed they may be. It's not what she is doing in this video, or how she does it, what brings in to attention is that this is the former Disney starlet acting naughty. Light references to bondage, interspersed with her and her bare- chested lover, some silly antics in a fountain and with a stone statue, but most notably, that thumb-sucking sequence. Whoever thought this up, I'd just bet it wasn't Hilary.
She has some extra baggage in this music video, an oddly almost cartoonish rapper riding on the back of the little blonde girl, what an ineffectual little self-absorbed creep singing about himself as 'the new perfect man'... What were they thinking? What could her many, many other years-long loyal fans have thought about this little louse? Cool...? I totally doubt that! I think she allowed her image to be hijacked, there's a whole new market, cashing in with input from the rap scene, but her true fans surely all looked on puzzled.
Not that I'm complaining about the rest of the video. Hilary sounds good, the song is catchy, she is her usual stunning self. Pity about that parasite.
