Jennifer Lopez is ready to make art out of previous heartache. Her debut single off of her ninth album, titled “Can’t Get Enough,” is set to premiere this Wednesday, Jan. 10.
“I have my new single, from my new album and my new movie,” Lopez told Variety’s senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin on the Golden Globes carpet. “Wednesday is actually a really big day, 22 years in the making.”
There to support her Globe-nominated husband Ben Affleck, J.Lo paused to tease her first studio album since 2014 and the upcoming, wedding-filled music video that will accompany the debut single.
“I think it might surprise some people. It’s definitely kind of a meta story about the journey that it takes from getting from heartbreak back to love … I am somewhat of an expert you could say in a real way. Not so much about marriage but on weddings,...

Jennifer Lopez is attached to star in a feature adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” written and directed by “Dreamgirls” filmmaker Bill Condon, Variety has confirmed with a source close to the production. The music is by legends John Kander and Fred Ebb, based on the novel by Manuel Puig and the book of the musical by Terrence McNally.
The musical is set in an Argentinian prison in 1981. Lopez would play the titular role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. To escape the horrors of his imprisonment, Molina imagines movies starring Aurora as a classic silver screen diva, including a role of the spider woman, who kills her prey with a kiss. Molina’s life is upended when a Marxist, Valentin Arregui Paz, is brought into his cell, and the two form an unlikely bond.

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

Nagpal, who worked on movies including Greyhound, Bombshell and The Good Liar, has launched Entropy Media with plans to launch five investigative, narrative non-fiction series this year.
First out of the gate is Brokers, Bagmen, and Moles. Premiering on April 26, the series starts on the Chicago trading floor of the 1980s — a workplace unlike any we know today — as the FBI mounts one of the most expensive, elaborate undercover investigations in its history. The goal: to catch brokers allegedly stealing millions of dollars from their customers. Was it a massive success that reformed our financial markets – or a huge flop costing taxpayers millions of dollars?

Warner Bros’ Clint Eastwood Western Cry Macho wasn’t tough at the box office this past weekend, opening to $4.4 million at 3,967 theaters in third place. The pic lacked grit in homes on HBO Max as well, pulling in only 693,0000 households stateside over the weekend according to Samba TV.
In a year of day-and-date theatrical-streaming experimentation by Warner Bros, it’s a continuing trend that when a movie is great, it translates (to a certain extent) at the box office and in the home viewership on HBO Max. And when the film doesn’t resonate in theaters, it’s also not going to in the homes; we saw this last weekend with James Wan’s Malignant, which paled on the service and in cinemas.
The latest film by Eastwood received blasé results from critics with 52% on Rotten Tomatoes and moviegoers with a B CinemaScore. Nothing to rush out to, and nothing to change the channel to.

CBS Studios is developing Broadmoor, a drama series intended for the UK/International premium and streaming market. The series, created by screenwriter/playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, is produced by Fulwell 73, which counts James Corden among its partners, in association with CBS Studios, where the company is based, and Miramax, in which ViacomCBS owns 49%.
Inspired by true events, Broadmoor is based on the famous British high-security psychiatric hospital, originally known as the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. It features overlapping stories about the staff, the visitors and, of course, the patients that included maniacs, stranglers, slashers and serial killers. Set against the backdrop of a crumbling 1970s-80s Britain on the edge of violent social change, the series follows a young woman who goes to Broadmoor believing that murderous behavior can be understood, treated, even tamed, only to find she has entered a warehouse for England’s fears, the locked attic where its...

Written by Rebecca Addelman (Dead to Me) and to be directed by Trent O’Donnell (No Activity), Guilty Party stars Beckinsale as Beth Baker, a discredited journalist desperate to salvage her career by latching on to the story of a young mother sentenced to life in prison for maiming and murdering her husband — crimes she claims she didn’t commit. A batch of early Christmas presents will arrive on Sky Cinema in November! Time to look ahead at which movies are on the way…
Premieres
Ash is Purest White (2018) – 4th November
Cannes favourite Ash Is Purest White is a Chinese drama from Jia Zhangke, and the story is based on the leader of a gang from Zhangke’s childhood who he looked up to. It’s still holding steady at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, so we can confidently say it’s a winner.
Doctor Sleep (2019) – 6th November on Sky Cinema and the Sky Cinema Pass on Now TV
A Shining sequel? Hm, could that ever really be any good? Ah, but wait, a Shining sequel from Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan based on an actual Stephen King book? We can confirm: it’s certainly a lot better than we thought it might be. In Doctor Sleep, little Danny Torrance has gotten old.

This week, Barcelona-based filmmaker Kike Maíllo’s “A Perfect Enemy” will world premiere at Catalonia’s Sitges Film Festival, playing in the event’s Official Fantastic Competition. Ahead of its Oct. 16 premiere, sales agent Pulsar Content has given Variety access to the film’s international trailer.
An adaptation of Amélie Nothomb’s bestselling novel “Cosmétique de l’Ennemi,” the film is the story of internationally renowned architect Jeremiasz Angust. While waiting in the Paris International Airport, he’s approached by a talkative young woman named Texel Textor who’s colorful and energetic look and demeanor are a complete mismatch with Angust’s own uptight garb and composure.
After Texel causes him to miss his flight, Angust is unable to shake the girl and what started as an amusing chat quickly becomes something far more malicious.
For the cast, Maíllo recruited Oscar-level talent in “Cold War” star Tomasz Kot and Spanish actress Marta Nieto,...

GLAAD has released its annual Studio Responsibility Index, a thorough analysis of LGBTQ representation in major studio films, and progress was slow in 2019. While the number of LGBTQ characters increased, the appearance of non-white LGBTQ characters decreased and transgender characters were not present at all. While the percentage of LGBTQ characters is the highest its been in the eight-year history of the report, none of the eight major studios received a “Good” grade. The grading system factors in the quality, quantity, and diversity of LGBTQ representation.
GLAAD found that of the 118 films released from major studios in 2019, 22 (18.6 percent) included characters that were lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ). This represents a slight increase from the previous year’s report. Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, United Artists Releasing, and Universal Pictures received “Insufficient” grades; Sony Pictures Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios received “Poor” grades; and STX Films received a “Failing” grade,...

Cesc Gay’s “The People Upstairs,” David Victori’s “Cross the Line,” Kike Maíllo’s “A Perfect Enemy” and David Matamoros and Ángeles Hernández’s “Isaac” are among a robust 11-feature pack offered by Upcoming Catalan Films at Cannes’ online Marché du Film.
An acclaimed Catalan director of dramedy focused on middle-aged, urban, often lost characters, in “The People Upstairs” Gay (“Truman”) depicts an ordinary situation— a couple having dinner with neighbors — in which a friendly time together gradually slips towards emotional upheaval.
Mario Casas-starrer “Cross the Line” is director David Victori’s (“The Pact”) second feature. A one-night thriller, it follows a more or less good guy dedicated to taking care of his sick father who, after his dad passes, decides to get his life back on track. In the process, he “asks questions of himself he never imagined he would,” Victori explains.

Things have been pretty quiet on the movie front for a while, given the pandemic, but this weekend marks a major upswing in content for cinema lovers, with multiple brand new releases available. Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is unfortunately not up for streaming at present, but Netflix Original Da 5 Bloods, the latest effort from the Oscar-winning Spike Lee, is. For family audiences, there’s also Artemis Fowl over on Disney Plus, which was originally set for a theatrical release back in May.
Even outside of these new films though, there’s plenty of fresh titles coming to the various streaming services this weekend, from classic movies, recent hits, new TV series, old TV series, etc. Whatever combination of services you’re subscribed to, you can fill your whole weekend watching what’s coming to Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon, HBO Max and the rest over the next few days.

Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” debuted this weekend to $40 million, enough to lead box office charts but still a somewhat disappointing start given the studio’s sterling track record when it comes to animated fare. Internationally, the film brought in $28 million for a global tally of $68 million.
“Onward,” a fantastical adventure about two teenage elf brothers (voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) on a quest to spend one last day with their late father, ranks among Pixar’s lowest opening weekend’s in modern times, joining 2015’s “The Good Dinosaur” and its $39 million as a rare blemish for the Disney-owned company, known for producing hits such as “Inside Out,” Coco” and “Up.” Pixar films typically cost $175 million to $200 million to make, a huge sum that doesn’t include global marketing fees.

Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” is expected to dominate moviegoing in North America when it debuts this weekend. The family-friendly animated adventure should collect $40 million to $45 million from 4,200 theaters in the U.S. and Canada.
“Onward,” anchored by voice performances from Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, isn’t the only new movie launching, but it will have no trouble leading box office charts. “The Way Back,” a sports drama starring Ben Affleck, is eyeing an opening weekend between $6 million to $10 million from 2,718 venues — a lackluster start given its A-list leading man. Unless the film, marketed as a big-screen comeback of sorts for Affleck, beats expectations, it looks to become another dud for Warner Bros. Before the Film Independent Spirit Awards kicked off inside a drafty tent in Santa Monica, IndieWire was set up on the blue carpet ahead of the ceremony, as the stars of independent film breezed by in their Saturday best — but not before taking a minute to talk about their nominated films. And with the Oscars just a day away, one question everyone was eager to answer was, “What was your best picture of 2019?” The answer, almost unanimously, was “Parasite.” Or “Uncut Gems,” sadly shut out of the Oscar race but feted with five Indie Spirit nominations.
“Parasite” fans on the Indie Spirits blue carpet included, well, pretty much everybody — from “Greener Grass” filmmakers Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe to young “Marriage Story” star Azhy Robertson. “‘Parasite’ is the easy answer because it’s the best film of the year,” “The Climb” star and screenwriter Kyle Marvin told IndieWire. The first still of “A Perfect Enemy,” the psychological thriller directed by popular Spanish filmmaker Kike Maíllo and based on Amelie Nothomb’s bestselling novel, has been unveiled by newly-launched sales company Pulsar Content.
Pulsar Films is co-representing U.S. rights with CAA and UTA. Based on Nothomb’s “The Enemy’s Cosmetique,” “A Perfect Enemy” stars “Cold War” actor Tomasz Kot and “The Good Liar” actress Athena Strates. Maíllo previously starred in “Eva” and “Toro.”
The crime movie follows a successful architect, Jeremy Angust, who is approached by a chatty woman named Texel Textor (Athena Strates) at a Paris airport. Jeremy misses his flight because of Texel, who seems like an outcast desperate for attention. Although the meeting seems fortuitous, the nature of this encounter soon turns into something much more sinister and criminal. Kot is represented by UTA, while Strates is repped by Baumbauer Actors.

Year-end lists are a matter of taste and can say more about the writer than the subject. Annual box office summaries are statistics-based and often miss the bigger stories at hand.
So in an attempt at something different, we are going to cite 12 films of note not as hits or misses, but what they mean for future productions.
Wide Release
The Lion King (Disney)
The film that showed the strength of the overwhelmingly dominant studio was this technically updated remake of their 1994 animated smash. Both versions grossed over $400 million domestic: adjusted, 1994 would be $805 million and #20 all time; 2019 was $544 million and a bit more than double that overseas.
But what really makes this smash stand out is it came in the face of mediocre reviews and social media scorn questioning why a new version was necessary.
That damn-the-torpedoes success sends the message that the public has a mind of its own.

‘Black Christmas’ (Photo credit: Universal).
With Disney/Fox’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker invading cinemas this Thursday no distributor was brave – or foolish – enough to launch potentially lucrative titles last weekend.
So, no one could blame cinemagoers for ignoring the new releases which had flopped or under-performed in the Us or the UK, while Universal/Blumhouse’s horror movie Black Christmas was D.O.A here and globally.
Paramount’s family comedy Playing with Fire fared best among the newcomers, but that’s not saying a lot as the top 20 titles generated $10.4 million, down 16 per cent on the previous frame according to Numero.
The Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen II continued its reign, raking in nearly $3.7 million in its third weekend, propelling the total to $22.8 million. The sequel co-directed by the original’s Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee has amassed $1.03 billion worldwide, ranking as the seventh biggest animated release of all time.

Clint Eastwood might end up with a lump of box office coal after “Richard Jewell” sputtered in its domestic debut. Despite critical acclaim, the drama about the security guard falsely accused by the media for playing a part in the 1996 Olympics bombing ignited with a dismal $5 million from 2,502 theaters.
It’s a disappointing result for Eastwood, marking one of the worst nationwide openings of the 89-year-old’s directorial career. His only movie to endure a worse fate was 1980’s “Bronco Billy” with $3.7 million. Should “Richard Jewell” come in ahead of expectations by even $200,000, that would propel it just barely above 1997’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” ($5.2 million) and 1999’s “True Crime” ($5.2 million) in terms of Eastwood’s inaugural outings.
“It started out with so much promise in terms of awards season buzz,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore. “You’ve got a really high-profile...
