Lt. Granderson identifies the drone as an General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper, which is primarily used by the United States Air Force, there are a few variants known as the MQ-9 Sea Guardian that are jointly used by both the United States Navy and the Coast Guard and one variant used by the United States Customs and Border Protection. The Reaper is one of the larger drones with a length of 36 feet, a wingspan of 65 feet and a payload capacity of 3,800 pounds. The Reaper has an operational rage of 1,200 miles and a top speed of 300 miles per hour, a typical operating altitude of 25,000 feet and a maximum altitude of 50,000 feet. It is typically armed with four Hellfire air-to-surface missiles and two GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs. In 2012 a new variant called the MQ-9 Block V was developed, it included upgrades that increase the drone's onboard electrical power, payload and weapon carrying capacity, the naval Sea Guardian Block V can even be fitted with the heavier Harpoon anti-ship missile. A new variant designed for anti-aircraft warfare is being developed that if successful will allow the Reaper to carry and launch Stinger air-to-air missiles.
