- The nation reels from the aftermath of the shooting on the steps of the Capitol while Emily struggles with the knowledge there may be a traitor in the White House. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Hannah Wells grapples with her decision to reveal what she knows about the conspiracy behind the Capitol bombing.
- Hannah's actions in part are able to thwart the assassination attempt against the President at MacLeish's swearing-in ceremony. Tom is nonetheless shot by the sniper in the process. The sniper is able to escape. Hannah is taken into custody on possible conspiracy charges in the assassination attempt. Tom's injuries are initially thought to be non-life threatening, however further examination shows there are possible complications which require delicate surgery to rectify. As Tom will be unconscious during surgery, he has no other option but to invoke the twenty-fifth amendment to have MacLeish act as President during the surgery, despite he now having reservations about his new Vice-President. He asks the only other person both with official powers and knowledge of possible wrongdoing by MacLeish to act as a watchdog during his temporary presidency, namely Kimble. While the MacLeishes work toward their end goal, Peter becomes concerned about they being caught in the conspiracy, most specifically the sniper being caught and breaking under interrogation, whereas Beth is more confident both that they will be able to reach their end goal and that nothing can tie them back either to the assassination attempt or the Capitol bombing. During this time, Emily, who was unable to speak to Tom about what she found out about Aaron, confides in Alex, who wants Aaron kept away from Tom until the information can be verified. Alex, in turn, reflects back on her role in their current life path, she who would have taken that back in hindsight, while Aaron has some evidence of his own that he is not in the loop about things that are happening with regard to the President. In custody, Hannah doesn't feel like she can speak openly to anyone but the President about what she knows about MacLeish. Before going into surgery, Tom asks Mike to question Hannah about that information. Hannah has to decide if she can trust Mike, and if so how she can pass along the information without Forstell knowing.—Huggo
