Latido Films has picked up international sales rights to musical comedy “Explota Explota” (“My Heart Goes Boom!”), a Spanish-Italian co-production, based on the hit songs by Italian singer Raffaella Carrà.
Produced by Mariela Besuievsky at Madrid-based Tornasol Films and Carlotta Calori at Rome’s Indigo Film, the movie marks the feature debut by Uruguayan-Spanish director Nacho Álvarez.
“My Heart” teams two Oscar-winning European companies: “The Secret In Their Eyes” producers Besuievsky and Gerardo Herrero’s Tornasol with Indigo, the shingle behind Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty.”
Spanish pubcaster Rtve is also co-producing.
Amazon Prime Video will offer “The Heart” after its theatrical release, which will be handled by Universal Pictures International Spain.
The film went into production in early November and will shoot for eight weeks in Madrid, Pamplona and Rome.
Set in the ’70s, it tells the story of María, played by Ingrid García-Jonsson (“Beautiful Youth”), a young...

Berlin-based M-Appeal has closed a flurry of deals across its slate, including Ash Mayfair’s “The Third Wife” and Michal Aviad’s “Working Woman,” which were launched at Toronto.
“The Third Wife” sold to Potential Films for Australia/New Zealand and Crest International for Japan. Potential Films is planning a theatrical release next summer, while Crest International plans a rollout next fall.
The movie, which had its world premiere in Toronto’s Discovery section, is set in 19th-century rural Vietnam and follows 14-year-old May, who becomes the third wife of wealthy landowner Hung. May soon learns that she can only gain status by asserting herself as a woman who can give birth to a male child.
M-Appeal previously sold “The Third Wife” to North America, the U.K., Ireland, Taiwan, Singapore, Mexico, South Korea, Hong Kong and Spain.
“I was truly impressed by the beauty of the picture, by its authenticity and,...

Our staffs, readers, and some celebrity friends come together to select the Best TV comedies of the year!
How does TV comedy keep getting better?
Dramas hit a bit of a plateau on television in 2018. The likes of Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and even The Leftovers are now distant memories. Better Call Saul lives on, and The Americans concluded in fine fashion but the landscape after that isn’t as nearly as impressive as years’ past.
More than ever, it is comedy that is the driving force behind the most daring, creative, and fun storytelling on television. Perhaps that’s because comedy is more context-dependent than drama and therefore must be more adaptable and change with the times. Or maybe it’s simply because we all just want to laugh? Whatever the reason,...

Everyone feels like they’re inventing love, the first time they experience it. Mika is no exception. The merry-eyed, free-spirited heroine of sunswept, pulsatingly youthful Swedish love story “The Heart,” is played by Fanni Metelius (“Force Majeure“) in a light, summery performance all the more remarkable because Metelius is also the writer and debut director here. Mika is a sexually liberated young woman who, when we meet her, has pronounced precociously absolutist views on relationships: They’re not for her.

Of all the ‘depressed relationship’ dramas of the early ’70s, this may be the most rewarding. It also sports one of the longest titles on record. Paul Zindel’s award-winning play gets a marvelous adaptation for the screen, thanks to Alvin Sargent, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. There’s also the stealth input of the star couple’s daughter Nell Potts, whose restrained performance is the happy opposite of mawkish and maudlin.

The heart wants what it wants, but does not get – this is the premise of Swedish actress-director Fanni Metelius’s debut The Heart (Hjartat), about a young photographer Mika and her musician boyfriend Tesfay who are madly in love, yet cannot seem to make their relationship work. While The Heart treads familiar ground, Metelius’s directorial vision is assured and the film’s packaging trendy. The net result is an engaging portrait of a modern-day Swedish relationship, whilst carrying some strong messages about female sexuality and independence. The film made its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, under the Bright Future section. Set in Sweden, The Heart chronicles the progressive development of the romantic relationship between Mika (starring Metelius herself) and Tesfay (Ahmed...
